The Dagger —
Any time games are not close, and they certainly weren't on Saturday,
the impulse is to complain. I felt it too: my trip to the neighborhood
pub Saturday with friends was deflated and maybe even ruined by the
North Carolina derby. Right around the time it was 40-12, everyone I
was with had moved on almost entirely. They were ordering food,
checking cell phones, sending flirtatious text messages to girls that
probably wanted nothing to do with them ... they were no longer focused
on the games. Two consecutive beatings will do that to a casually
interested observer.
But I was entertained. Memphis-UCLA was a startling display of force by
a ...

The Postmen // A Sports Blog // Chicago, IL. —
Tough weekend. I won’t get into all the details, but let’s just say that I feel awful this morning, and I am especially proud of myself for getting this done, considering the circumstances. I may be a lazy bum who never cleans, cooks, or shows any regard for personal hygiene, but never let it be said that I don’t blog in the face of adversity. Because this weekend’s conditions were adverse.
Anyway, the whole point of this post is to have an excuse to watch this video one more time. Kevin Love’s face, meet Chris Douglas-Roberts’ unlimited athletic ability: ...
The Remaining Two in the Final Four of Blue
Mac Gs World —
Since I mumble about sports, I feel the obligatory need to mention the Final Four even though the whole 2008 tournament has been pretty blah. Aside from trying to figure out what state Davidson is in and the Marquette/Stanford, West Virginia/Xavier endings, nothing memorable really stands out from the games. Memphis and KU looked impressive in their victories setting up a potential classic championship game. UCLA had zero answers for Derrick Rose and Bruin star guard Darren Collison could not stop Rose's dribble penetration. Memphis smothering defense, superior athletes and depth down low proved too much for the ...
You gotta feel for Calipari
perkisabeast.com Blog —
To be that close and to lose it really makes you feel for Coach Cal and Memphis. Say what you will about the team but I liked these guys a lot. I feel particularly badly for Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts, who pretty much choked the game away. Too bad for CDR, who easily had the best statement dunk of the tournament. ...
NBA DRAFT GOOD CALL/BAD CALL
REALESTS NCAA College Michigan Football Basketball Rich Rodriguez Lil Wayne DMX —
OK, this is a blatant rip-off of the SportsCenter segment but we couldn't think of anything catchier... SO BACK OFF! People are jumping like crazy to the NBA. We took the liberty of telling them whether or not they made good decisions: O.J. Mayo (Fr., USC) Bad Call: Granted, his game developed so much over his freshman year. But here's the thing about Mayo: As a 7th-grader, he was billed as the next LeBron James. Problem is, he's that guy from your hometown that hit puberty in middle school and never grew anymore. Instead of the next LBJ, Mayo is just an undersized shooting guard (listed at 6-4, more like ...
It's Draft Time Already?
Globetrotter —
ESPN.com has the Rockets taking Marreese Speights (C, 6-10, 245 lbs) out of Florida. But NBA-TV, HoopsHype.com, NBADraft.net and Chron.com all have Houston taking Chris Douglas-Roberts (SF, 6-6, 195 lbs). The general fan consensus seems to think the Rockets need Georgetown ...
NBA Draft: Oh, What A Night
Intentional Foul —
The NBA Draft was last night if you couldn’t tell, and what did we learn? The Chicago Bulls talked themselves out of a scoring post player for a homegrown guard. Not that Derrick Rose is a bad pick, not at all. However, the Bulls already have a glut of guards (none as dynamic as Rose, admittedly) but are sorely lacking in the post-scoring department.
We also learned the Portland Trail Blazers aren’t afraid to shop multiple deals and players to get what they want. When the NBA Draft smoke cleared, the Blazers wound up with Jerryd Bayless (who looked a little down about being traded to Portland) and Nicolas ...
The Mystery of the Chris Douglas-Roberts Draft Slide
Intentional Foul —
Last night, the most valuable player for the Memphis Tigers — no, it wasn’t Derrick Rose — didn’t get drafted until later in the second round and I have to wonder why. Here is a list of some of the guards taken before CDR:
Derrick Rose
O.J. Mayo
Russell Westbrook
Eric Gordon
Joe Alexander
D.J. Augustin
Jerryd Bayless
Brandon Rush
Courtney Lee
George Hill
J. R. Giddens
And that’s just the first round. In the second round, Chicago decided Sonny Weems was a better player than their new point guard’s running mate from college. I guess ...
CDR: “Buckets” of Confidence…Even at #40
NetsDaily Blog —
If Chris Douglas-Roberts is still angry about being picked at #40 on Draft Night, might we offer a few dates for him to circle on his calendar.
On January 15, the Trailblazers arrive at the IZOD Center. Portland passed on him four times.
If that doesn’t work for him, he could always pencil in December 5 against the Timberwolves or January 12 when the Thunder pay their inaugural visit or perhaps, April 15, when the Bobcats drop by. Each of those teams passed on him three times.
It doesn’t take much to get CDR, aka “Buckets”, to recall the indignity of dropping into the second round, not ...
Fire Kevin McHale
David's Memphis Grizzlies Blog —
My biggest hopes for Grizzlies this season: OJ Mayo gets Kevin McHale fired. I hope that OJ Mayo outperforms Kevin Love (featured above doing his best Shawn Bradley impression) so that every sports writer across the country has to write a an article next April about what a lop-sided trade the ...
Memphis to forfeit victories from the '07-'08 season
Ballin' is a Habit —
According to a report from the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, the Memphis Tigers will receive a ruling today which will vacate their wins from the 2007-2008 season in which they came a few missed free throws from a national title. Along with the Final Four, Memphis will also lose their record 38 win season and 16 of their 61 game Conference USA win streak.
Back in the spring, news came out that a player on that team (eventually confirmed as Derrick Rose) had used a stand-in in order to gain a qualifying score on the SAT's. It was also alleged that an associate of that player (Derrick's brother Reggie) owed in excess of $2,000 for travel expenses ...
Should Duke have their 1999 season vacated?
Ballin' is a Habit —
In case you missed it, over the weekend Gary Parrish filed an excellent column comparing the punishment Memphis received for using an ineligible Derrick Rose to Duke's use of Corey Maggette. If you remember, Maggette admitted to taking money from Myron Piggie, his AAU coach in high school. The gist of Parrish's column is this: Memphis was penalized retroactively for using an ineligible player even though they initially had cleared Rose to play. But Maggette, who admitted to taking money that was in part supplied by agents, also could have had his eligibility revoked retroactively, but Duke's 1999 Final Four season still stands in the ...
