Carolina Coach Fox: Wesley Hit “Not Deliberate”
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
Here’s video and a photo montage of Carolina Panther Dante Wesley’s vicious hit on Tampa Bay Buccaneer Clifton Smith today in Tampa: Dante Wesley Hit On Clifton Smith (Video after the jump) Smith suffered a concussion and a throat injury and was unable to speak after the Bucs 28-21 loss to the Panthers. Wesley was ejected from the game and will undoubtedly get fined and hopefully a suspension. Tampa Bay Safety Sabby Piscitelli had the reaction most of us had. He said, “I was in shock like everyone else. I was trying to keep my cool as a professional and not kill him.” I say “most of us had”, because Carolina Coach John Fox has a reax that ...

Dante Wesley Huge Hit on the Bucs
Walker Sports —
The Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Bucs are in the midst of disappointing seasons, especially the Panthers. Sunday when the two division rivals took the field against each other things got ugly. Carolina safety lays one of the hardest and most unnecessary hits I have ever seen. This is a huge hit, too bad it was illegal. ...
Dante Wesley Was About To Get Killed
Bucstats.com —
Dante Wesley was probably grateful that he was ejected and had to go to the locker room after his incredibly cheap shot on Clifton Smith yesterday. It gave him the chance to change his pants after he surely pissed them.
“You know, I’m looking at ‘Where are my teammates at?’ I didn’t see nothing but a sea of white. I’m wondering, ‘OK, ref, you going to call a penalty? You going to get them off me? You going to come grab me or something?’”
The refs intervened and prevented Wesley’s lynching and an all-out gang war ...
The Dante Wesley Hit on Clifton Smith Should Be Good for a Decent Fine
InGameNow —
If you want to see how Dante Wesley blew a few thousand dollars over the weekend, check this cheap shot on Clifton Smith. He was ejected immediately after the play, and we’ll certainly hear about a fine this week. By the way, the Bucs are still winless despite this incident.

Dante Wesley Suspended For Game Without Pay
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
The ASSOCIATED PRESS reports the NFL has suspended Carolina Panther Dante Wesley for his cheap shot on Tampa Bay Buccaneer Clifton Smith yesterday. Dante Wesley Hit On Clifton Smith (Video after the jump) NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson in a letter to Wesley: “The prohibited contact in this case went well beyond simply interfering with the receiver. Instead, by striking your defenseless opponent in the head and neck area, you committed an unnecessary and unnecessarily dangerous act that is specifically prohibited by the rules.“ More from Anderson: Your actions are of particular concern ...
Suck Fest 2009: 1 down.

10 to go.
This was a disheartening loss–or, ok, an unusually disheartening loss–because the Bucs clearly could have won it. Should have won it. But any team that allows their opponents to eat up 94 yards and practically an entire 4th quarter of play is going to lose. Which is what the Bucs did.
There were some glimmers of hope. Tanard Jackson made his non-suspended presence known with an interception returned for a touchdown. Aqib Talib made his presence known by not allowing Steve Smith to make his presence known. (Smith had 1 catch for 4 yards, and is all complain-y now.) Sammy Stroughter made his presence known ...
Dante Wesley Suspended One Game
Every Morning Quarterback —
Carolina Panthers backup defensive back (and special teams gunner) Dante Wesley has been suspended without pay for one game by NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson for a flagrant violation of player safety rules. Specifically, on a punt coverage play yesterday, Dante left his feet, launched himself like a missile and made shoulder and forearm contact with the neck and head area of Tampa Bay Bucs punt returner Clifton Smith, who had not caught or touched the ball and was in a defenseless posture. The suspension will sideline Dante for the Panthers game vs. Buffalo this Sunday. In a letter to Dante today, Mr. Anderson wrote: ...

D-Bag of the Week for 18/10/09

This is a first…co-winners of the Douchebag of the Week award. One for what he did, one for what he said.
And both are from the Carolina Panthers.
First there’s Dante Wesley. The Panthers cornerback took it upon himself to try and make Carson Palmer’s prediction that someone will eventually be killed on a football field a reality this past Sunday.
By nearly decapitating Bucs PR Clifton Smith…before the ball even got there. Here’s the vicious hit, where you clearly see three things…

Panthers’ Wesley Suspended One Game
850 & 620 THE BLOG —
Carolina Panther’s special teams specialist, Dante Wesley was suspended for one game without pay by the NFL for his flying helmet-to-the-head hit of Tampa Bay’s Clifton Smith on Sunday. The hit got Welsely a 15-yard penalty and the rest of the game off — and now it cost him an additional $36,000. What did John Fox think about the NFL’s reaction?
It’s not intentional. It’s not done maliciously. You’ve got to make a split-second decision. It’s no different than driving to work and putting your breaks on. Sometimes accidents ...
NFL Suspends Wesley
DUELING COUCHES —
This story is a few days old, but I'd like to expand a bit on it. The NFL suspended Panther Dante Wesley for this cheap shot. He breaks multiple rules with this hit. Clifton Smith calls for a fair catch, and the ball isn't even close to being there yet. Wesley leaves his feet to make the hit. He goes after Smith's head with his elbow. I think a one game suspension is a bit soft. But not too soft. Some have really railed against the NFL for being soft here, but how often do players get suspended for dirty hits? Usually it's just a fine, sometimes only $5,000, sometimes $50,000. I think Wesley ...
