April Fool's Day at USC
The Wiz of Odds —
Only at USC. Pete Carroll plays a prank on defensive end Everson Griffen, who is said to have "physically abused a freshman" and is threatened with an arrest Tuesday during a team meeting. The freshman turns out to be offensive lineman Matt Meyer, who was flattened in practice by Griffen.

Depending on who you listen to, the competition for quarterback is either looking more even or not even at all. According to the LA Times, both Sanchez and Mustain were looking good yesterday. According to the Daily News, the matter is demonstrably settled because Mustain was working out with the second unit. Both articles indicated that the offensive line was showing some protection issues. The LA Times suggested that Mustain was better than Sanchez at improvising to make up for blown protection schemes. _ On his blog, Scott Wolfe quotes one of the NFL coaches who came to watch pro day and commented about the ...

I don’t like Pete Carroll. Neither do you.

USC's Pete Carroll Pulls April Fool's Day Prank On Everson Griffen
FanIQ Blog —
The Wizard of Odds found this rather hilarious video on Friday, but I sort of missed it. This is Pete Carroll pulling an April Fools Day prank on USC D-end Everson Griffen, who's picked up by police for "physically attacking a freshman."
The freshman turned out to be offensive lineman Matt Meyer, who gut run over by Griffen during a spring practice session.
The funny thing though is how quietly Griffen went, almost like he knew he'd finally been pinched on something. After all, they say most innocent people typically create a big stink when they get ...

Yeah, it was April Fool’s Day last week so this is sort of old, but I bring it to your attention for one reason: by and large, April Fool’s jokes are lame. Hey look at this link! Bob Knight just threw a chair at an elephant down in Texas! Wait for it … APRIL FOOLS! I mean think about it: this is the one day of the year were pranks are supposed to happen. You should be expecting dumb crap like this; it’s basically like expecting gifts on Christmas (or Hanukkah). (Disclaimer: Anyone privy to me getting fooled on April’s Fools would be a fool ...

Mark Schlabach does his thing with Mike Leach for the Worldwide Leader, and it is, not surprisingly, pirates galore. Not that there's anything wrong with that (well, except the Margaritaville bit. Yar). - - - I like Schlabach, as far as severely space-limited mainstream columnists go, and he does a fine job here. (the most interesting quote has nothing to do with pirates, or personally commissioned Van Gogh ripoffs: "If you're getting to the office at 6 a.m. and getting home at midnight, well, then you're wasting a lot of time," Leach said. "That's just a failure to manage your time. What are you doing in the ...

The rules for this team: all players are second or third-year guys -- no incoming freshmen or JUCOs -- set to start for the first time this year, or otherwise to contribute heavily after a redshirt year or a season (or two) as a backup; in other words, their move into the lineup should be less like a patient adjustment period and more like shooting a cannon. No one on the team was feted with awards or freshman all-America notices, and none has more than five career starts; many have none. Because they weren’t instant impact beasts, you ...
Pete Carroll plays joke on his USC football team
Sports Crackle Pop —
USC head football coach is a prankster. He pulled a April Fools joke on defensive end Everson Griffen and this past Sunday in camp he decided to play one on his whole team. Carroll says that defensive end Kyle Moore was caught by police in an internet piracy ring, but in the end tells his team in lieu of practice the team will go bowling instead. The players seem to have enjoyed it. What’s with coach picking on the d-ends for?

Daily headlines, notes and errata in anticipation of the Game of the Decade of the Year. You want a story? Buckeye Commentary's got your story right here: Malcolm Jenkins may not think Ohio State is an underdog, but clearly, yes, the Buckeyes are officially massive underdogs. The L.A. Daily News' Scott Wolf said he'd seen a line drop to nine, but like his commenters, I haven't come across one that low yet; most have OSU +10.5, and there's at least one that puts the spread as high as 11.0 in the Trojans' favor. Today the Buckeyes are rebuilding their psyche, relying on a true ...

Thursday means quickly.... He is a Jedi, and he helps people …. Meanwhile, even as devout football fans, the Whites had been on the road and out of touch with the NFL events. They particularly didn't want to know the Dallas Cowboys' outcome. The TiVo at home was waiting. Bill planned to watch the Cleveland game immediately, with suspense attached. But a couple of miles from the house, while driving on MacArthur Boulevard, the Whites had their own mini-disaster. A tire blew on the Mercury. Bill, luckily, managed to nurse his wounded ride off the street and into the lighted parking lot of a strip mall. ...

Pete Carroll is known for pranks. In 2005, LenDale White chucked a dummy off a nearby parking garage for a side-splitting fake suicide. (Really, you had to be there. Also, LenDale White ate the dummy afterwards, which was funny, albeit in a equally horrifying way.) He has also had mock arrests ...
Pete Carroll calls on Will Ferrell to keep Trojan practices classy
Dr. Saturday —
It's Washington week, USC is a 43-point favorite, Will Ferrell has nothing in particular to do once he's found a new use for his pale, hairy potbelly for the day. So why not have the SC alum have a little fun rescuing a pair of dying men at the Trojans' practice Thursday?
A stuntman fell from a platform, another ran across the field on fire. Both were "saved" by actor Will Ferrell, who wore a mask, half an Ironman costume and a Speedo-style swimsuit as Captain Compete.

Post-practice, USC assistants go slip sliding away
Dr. Saturday —
USC's offense and defense finished the scrimmage period of Tuesday's practice in a 12-12 deadlock. For the program that brought us star players faking suicide, defensive ends arrested for freshman abuse and Internet piracy, old-school R&B stars posing as experts on fungus and movie star alums interrupting practice as competition-themed super heroes, there's only one possible way to break a tie between the offense and defense: A slip 'n slide competition between the offensive and defensive line coaches, naturally.
After two rounds, your winner is ...
It’s fine and dandy that USC is SUPPOSED to be getting the axe, BUT…
Major League Jerk —
I’ve long admired Pete Carroll.
While it’s fun to knock his future prospects in Seattle because of his less than stellar record with the Patriots and Jets in the 90’s, some guys just are MADE for the college game…guys like Urban Meyer and Mack Brown and Jim Tressel spring instantly to mind. However, coaches are an interesting breed. Some are perfectly content sticking with collegians and dealing with recruiting and the more, CEO-esque responsibilities that come outside of the professional realm, yet some, like Bob Stoops and Nick Saban, have a competitive urge that’ll put the possibility of NFL ...
