UCLA: A Team of Destiny?
Published 3/9/2008 by Neil Joshi at The Sports Lounge
There’s no doubting that the UCLA Bruins are one of the most talented teams in the nation. Armed with super freshman Kevin Love, and one of the nation’s most improved players in Russell Westbrook, the Bruins have added a slasher and a reliable post presence to their already talented nucleus of Darren Collison, Josh Shipp, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, among others. Ben Howland’s club is aiming for the their third straight trip to the Final Four when the Tournament begins on March 20th, and with the Florida Gators finally out of the way, the Bruins no longer have their kryptonite standing in front of them. Never before has that 12th championship ...

Brent Musberger, Steve Lavin, H-O-R-S-E, Victoria's Secret
Published 3/9/2008 by Neil Best at Watchdog
I thought the most YouTube-worthy aspect of Saturday's Cal-UCLA tilt was going to be the discussion between Brent Musberger and Steve Lavin about UCLA's scantily clad dance team. Brent made an amusing crack about not knowing there was a Victoria's Secret major at UCLA, or something to that effect. But of course the finish trumped all that. There is some entertaining late-game yelling from Musberger and Lavin here. What I find interesting is they did not discuss the potential illegality of the winning shot from behind the backboard, which was a major topic of conversation on ...

Above The Rim: Pauley Pavilion Makes Refs Eat Whistles
Published 3/9/2008 by Signal to Noise at Signal to Noise
College hoops only-edition. UCLA’s Josh Shipp makes an amazing circus shot to stave off the upset from a bad Cal team, but it never should have gotten to that point after Kevin Love’s 3-pointer. Russell Westbrook fouled Ryan Anderson on that in-bound and the refs swallowed the whistles instead of ...

Brent Musberger, Steve Lavin Ripped for Commentary on UCLA-Cal Ending
Published 3/11/2008 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
Filed under: UCLA Basketball, California Basketball, Pac-10 Basketball, NCAA Basketball Media Watch, ESPNHere's how ESPN announcers Brent Musberger and Steve Lavin called the end of UCLA's 81-80 win over Cal, an ending that included a controversial call: (Video via Awful Announcing) Musberger and Lavin are now facing heavy criticism for their seeming cluelessness about the controversial finish, which included a shot (maybe) going over the backboard, which would negate the fact that it then went through the rim. Writes Bob Raissman in the ...

Who Else Thinks the Fix is in For UCLA?
Published 3/25/2008 by TheBigLead at The Big Lead
Someone posted this in the comments section Saturday night; apparently, it first popped up here. No need to inspect the larger version - Aggies’ point guard Donald Sloan not only got fouled in the closing seconds of their second-round game against UCLA - he as mauled by Josh Shipp across the wrist and by Darren Collison on the elbow. By our count - and Pac-10 peeps, feel free to correct us - this is the third time the Bruins have been bailed out by a late call this season. The other two are this non-foul against Stanford, which led to a UCLA win, and this shouldn’t-have-counted Josh Shipp shot over the backboard, ...

Undisciplined ASU Falls to UCLA, Hurts Tournament Chances

I’d ike to use this space to briefly discuss the UCLA game, and then go into depth on ASU’s tournament hopes. Make no mistake about it, despite a 21 point route, last night’s game was a perfectly winnable one for ASU. That is, if they had played disciplined, fundamental basketball.

Josh Shipp Hits Ridiculous (and Illegal?) Over the Backboard Shot for Another UCLA Comeback Victory

Karma apparently had a change of mind in the final 31 seconds of California's upset bid over UCLA. Surely I thought the Bruins were going to be handed a loss after the refs handed them a victory Thursday night. Not so much. Down most of the game, trailing by 4 with 31 seconds left, Kevin Love proceeded to hit a flailing three-pointer.

This is a ridiculous, straight-from-H-O-R-S-E shot by Josh Shipp. However, it’s against the rules to make that kind of shot now in any level of basketball (and has been for a number of years). So you’ve got that missed call and before that you’ll see another clear foul on the Bruins that was also not called by the officials after Kevin Love’s unexpected 3. Let the ...

Pac-10: UCLA does what’s expected and Cal is unable to wreak some form of revenge for last weekend’s bullshit call and equally BS circus shot by Josh Shipp. Bruins bury the Bears under an avalanche of three balls, and move on to face USC , who was the beneficiary of another BS call by Pac-10 refs on an over the back foul that didn’t exist late against Arizona State. Bruins won yesterday with some major home-cookin'
Okay, check me on this because I could be wrong, but isn't the shot that won the UCLA Bruins the game yesterday illegal? See for yourself... Unless the rules are different in college than they are in the pros, it shouldn't have. Take a look at this shot Larry Bird made back in the day. It was deemed against the rules and didn't count, so what's the difference? Help me out here.
Those Bruins Are A Charmed Bunch [Trick Shot Or Tricky Call]
Following the debacle against Stanford Thursday and now yesterday's flap over Josh Shipp's over-the-backboard shot to beat Cal, a lot of folks are making a hue and cry about UCLA being quite the officiating darlings of late. Shipp happens: UCLA beats Cal
What a shot. What a comeback. One thing I love about following UCLA basketball is you never get the feeling they’re out of a game. Pac-10 Refs: 2, Northern California: 0
"So this is what it sounds like when doves cry." I have to admit, as much as I loved to egg on Stanford , I really did think that the Cardinal got a little screwed over in that game against UCLA. Shady Call Means Everyone Still Loves UCLA
It’s not quite on the level of Georgetown-Villanova or Tennessee-Rutgers , but there was a pretty horrendous call last night at the end of regulation in UCLA-Stanford. Down two, UCLA’s sub-6-foot guard Darren Collison drove baseline and was met by Stanford’s 6-foot-8 Lawrence Hill.
All Ball: Referee, Horrible Call Give UCLA Bruins Win and Pac-10 Title, Robbing Stanford
Official who called a foul on Stanford’s Lawrence Hill — this with 2.5 seconds remaining in Thursday’s UCLA-Stanford Pac-10 showdown — shame on you, sir. Anyone Out There Not Love UCLA?
Over the weekend, no fewer than seven “analysts” had to have pegged UCLA as their favorite to win the NCAA title next month in San Antonio.
