FlyMaster +2Once again baseball players prove they can't fight. What kind of ninny throws a ball instead of a punch in a brawl? I feel for the fan who got clipped.

Peoria Chiefs Pitcher Julio Castillo Is Psycho, Arrested on Felony Assault
Published 7/25/2008 by Larry Brown at Larry Brown Sports
Rekindling the spirit of Jose Offerman, Julio Castillo did one of the worst things I’ve ever seen come happen in a sports brawl. As you might have seen on the highlight shows, the Dayton Dragons and Peoria Chiefs had a massive fight on Thursday night. I mean this fight was full of venom, with players acting with seriously malicious intent. Check out the video from a fan’s view:
That was easily one of the worst fights I’ve ever seen. There were a few hit batters involved and an infielder taken out by a baserunner that led to the brawl. And ...

I live in Dayton. And while the Dayton Dragons are a Reds affiliate, I couldn’t resist noting that there was a huge brawl that involved two former Buccos. The Dragons were at home against the Peoria Chiefs when a big time brawl erupted. There were a couple of HBP and Dragons manager Donnie Scott and Chiefs interim manager Carmelo Martinez (former Pirate) started arguing toe-to-toe. Martinez gave Scott a forearm shove. As players started to converge, Chiefs pitcher Julio Castillo threw a ball with full force toward the Dragons dugout. Apparently he missed and hit a fan. Brandon Menchaca leaped on Castillo’s back from behind and then it ...

Know that old line about going to a fight and a hockey game broke out?
Well, that was what happened last night at the Dayton Dragons game that I attended…
More below the fold…
According to the DDN, the tension started when Dayton starter Kyle Lotzkar hit a Peoria hitter in the first inning, the 4th Peoria player hit in 2 nights. I can speak for what happened on Wednesday night, but I will say that tensions started to rise in the bottom of the first when Peoria pitcher Julio Castillo hit Dragons SS Zach Cozart in the helmet.
Cozart lay on the grown for several minutes, his helmet was knocked ...

On the day the WNBA handed down expansive (10 players plus Mahorn) but largely tame (4 games at worst) suspensions, minor-league baseball gets in on the act.

Now THAT’s a Basebrawl

Pandemonium in Peoria last night: a rough minor league game turned into an all-out rumble, and 17 players were ejected. As managers barked at one another and benches emptied, pitcher Julio Castillo of Dayton hurled a baseball into the Peoria dugout … except it sailed into the stands and drilled a fan, sending them to the hospital. Solid work by the Dayton Daily News, which has video and many photos.
Minor League Scrap: Dayton vs Peoria… Who ya got?

ESPN - Fifteen players and both managers were ejected — and a fan was sent to the hospital — following a 10-minute, benches-clearing brawl in a Class-A minor league game between affiliates of the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.
The ejections were reversed by the league president George Spelius and the game was completed with Dayton winning 6-5.
The fan was taken to the hospital after being hit by a ball thrown by Peoria (Cubs) pitcher Julio Castillo, who was throwing at the Dayton (Reds) dugout but missed during the first-inning ...

A huge Minor League baseball fight broke out in Dayton, Ohio last night between the Dayton Dragons and Peoria Chiefs I located this video from a fan's vantage point in the stands. There appears to be some serious meat heads attending this minor league baseball game. "It was a big brawl," said Ben Means, 25, a fan from New Carlisle. "I like that kind of enthusiasm. It was sweet. We're excited. It's cool." No wonder MMA is extremely popular these days. During the game a Chiefs 2B broke his leg and a Dragons ...

A pitcher is in a Dayton, Ohio jail this morning, charged with felony assault after a huge brawl broke out in yesterday's Peoria Chiefs-Dayton Dragons Single-A baseball game. What started out as a heated argument between the team's managers, escalated when Peoria pitcher Julio Castillo fired a baseball at the Dayton dugout. To make matters worse, Castillo missed, and instead hit a fan sitting behind the dugout. It also emptied the Dayton bench and the melee was on. It all started in the 2nd inning when Castillo beaned Dragons ...

Baseball fights don't get more frightening than this one
Published 7/25/2008 by 'Duk at Big League Stew
Usually when we post baseball fight videos here on the Stew, it's to have a voyeuristic look at men being boys with tempers flaring in the heat of battle but with no real damage being done. However, Thursday night's 10-minute fight between the Dayton Dragons and Peoria Chiefs, which saw 15 players and both managers ejected, crashes through that boundary of an ultimately harmless brouhaha and enters full-fledged nightmare brawl territory with an absolutely haunting image. If you haven't seen it already, check out the video from the Dayton Daily News (there's no sound, so don't readjust your sets at home) and try not to flinch when ...

Opinion: Peoria Chiefs vs. Dayton Dragons vs. Sanity

When people hear about a fiery manger (like Wally Backman or Ozzie Guillen) getting ejected, bumping an umpire or throwing bats on the field, they sometimes use words like "childish" or "disgraceful." It shows a general lack of knowledge of the game and the etiquette of baseball (read this book if you're one of these people), but everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, there are times when the words "childish" and "disgraceful" should be used to describe events on the diamond because they go far beyond motivating players and showing up an umpire. This is one of those ...
Cub farmhand loses his mind - maybe his freedom
Published 7/25/2008 by PHE at Pitchers Hit Eighth :: A St Louis Cardinals blog
Leave it to the Cubs organization to do something to put the Cardinals’ problems into perspective.
Peoria pitcher Julio Castillo was arrested following a brawl in Peoria’s game Thursday night with Dayton after he fired a ball toward the Dayton dugout. Said ball skipped off of the dugout and injured a fan, who had to be taken to the hospital.
Castillo now faces felony charges that not only put his career in serious jeopardy, but probably his ability to remain in the United States.
Here’s amateur video of the brawl, the ball-throwing incident occurs right around 0:24 (my apologies for some off-color language ...
Sweet Uncle Lou’s Friday Roundup: The “Do Brewers Fans Realize They’re Still in Second?” Edition

Just curious. Do people in Wisconsin know how standings work? Are they aware that we’ve been in first since May 11th, and they haven’t been in first since April 8th? Are they aware that we were without our starting left fielder, who has performed equally as well as Ryan Braun, for about two months? Do they know that if they’re going to start talking shit, they should maybe actually PASS us first? Ah, well. Fuck those cheeseheads. Anyhow, here’s the Roundup:

Bennigan’s Shuts Its Doors, Cubs Fans Take It Out On Whoever They Can
Published 7/30/2008 by Rob Warmowski at Can't Stop The Bleeding
“Play nice, gentlemen,” reads the note from a concerned GC addressed to Ben Schwartz and myself in the wake of the latest Cubs fan assault on class and decorum, a beatdown which reportedly cost outnumbered White Sox fan Robert Steele his eye. But as Ghandi once observed, “An eye for an eye and soon the whole world is blind, and a tooth for a tooth explains Ronnie Woo-Woo.”
The CSTB honcho needn’t worry. We can, in fact, just all get along. I haven’t met Ben yet, but I doubt he’s a violent racist shitbag hedge fund manager, despite championing the red, white and blue as he does. And I’m no ...
