In a brilliant NCAA Tournament that has made him a star, Memphis freshman Derrick Rose has now had his signature moment in the championship game. It happened with 4:06 remaining and Memphis leading Kansas, 54-49. Memphis Coach John Calipari has been second guessed and raked for not calling a timeout after Derrick Rose hit the second of his 2 free throws that gave Memphis that 3 point lead in the final seconds. Free throws came back to haunt Memphis. For all their previous bluster, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Derrick Rose went 1-5 at the charity stripe down the stretch and it cost the Tigers the game. Gangsta D: Memphis pretty much threw that game. All Calipari has talked about is how they were gonna make FT's when it counted. Well last night, they didn't. I'm speaking, of course, of the play on words that Jim Nantz has after the final buzzer sounds. Not a bad effort. He didn't really seem to have a lot to work with, as the Kansas Jayhawks is not something that lends itself very easily to a play on words. All season we'd heard the same thing about Memphis. Great team, but their free throw shooting is going to kill them at some point in the tournament. We're halfway to knowing who our national champion will be, and Kansas heads into the break with a five-point lead after scoring the half's final five points.
