NBC Affliate Uses Dolls to Show Highlights of UNC and Duke
FanHouse —
Filed under: UNC Basketball, Duke Basketball, ACC Basketball, March Madness, NCAA Basketball Media Watch, Charlotte, Carolina (Major hat tip to ACC Nation) You should know that CBS has quite the stranglehold on the amount of highlights that can be shown on other networks (even ESPN has a limited amount of video). So, the NBC affiliate in the Triangle Area ... Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill ... is trying to get around this by using some old school tactics: acting. Yes, the network is using dolls to act out ...
Today's NCAA highlights using puppetry
Guyism » celebs —
NBC17's Penn Holderness finds a loophole around the tight video usage restrictions for NCAA tournament video highlights. And in case that's not enough basketball for you, UNC-Mount St. Mary's highlights can be seen here ...
A Non-CBS Affiliate Presents “One Shining Muppet”
Can't Stop The Bleeding —
There’s no truth to the rumor the Triangle’s NBC17 employed a similar strategy for their coverage of the Duke Lacrosse rape accusations.
Probably the best Duke highlights ever…

Hooray For Links! NCAA Tournament Edition
Super, Scintillating and Sarcastic —
I was never a big proponent of doing link dumps and the like on this site because, well, it didn't really make sense to me. Why would I simply reproduce things that are already out there? But as I did my own scouring of the Intertubes for college hoops content, I realized there was just too much quality (and, at times, utterly awful) stuff out there to simply leave untapped. So I give you Hooray For Links! which should appear at completely random intervals. Because without links, it's not really a blog, it's just a place to put thoughts I might not want to ...
Behold, players who fall down as easily and often as Greg Paulus
The Dagger —
The sports anchor at NBC-17 Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, a fellow named Penn
Holderness, explains why this had to happen, but I wanted to add to the
applause. That's the most creativity I've seen since someone named their child
"Penn Holderness."
And it's not only creative, it's quite accurate. Did you see the defense that
Belmont played against Gerald "The Frog" Henderson? That was exactly
how Belmont played defense in reality. Uncanny. That guy's got a future in
puppet shows.

By Chris Mottram Penn Holderness , NBC's sports guy in Carolina's Research Triangle area, found an incredibly hilarious, creative and wildly inaccurate way of showing the "highlights" of the Belmont-Duke game with his daughter's dolls : The only way to make that better would've been to use the Dr. Evil doll as Coach K instead of showing the real press conference footage. Listening to Mike Krzyzewski talk after that puppet reenactment really sucked the joy out of it all. Please, Channel 17 News Team, continue to do this with all your Tournament highlights. It's not only entertaining as hell, but also a nice middle finger to the NCAA. (H/T: ...
Duke-Belmont Plusher Than I Recall
Toledo Newspaper » Matt Sussman —
Oh my god, they actually did this.
NBC17, the Raleigh/Durham affiliate, was unable to attain highlights of NCAA basketball games from CBS, so to show the highlights from Duke’s near-loss to 15th-seeded Belmont, they… well… yeah, they did that. Seriously, local TV can rule sometimes. ◼ → Fark
Best Sportscast. Ever.
The Meaningful Collateral —
There are so many things RIGHT with this clip that I’m out of superlatives before we even start. Bravo, Penn Holderness. Bravo.

DUKE VS. BELMONT ACTED OUT BY DOLLS
With Leather - Sports news and gossip, panda sex, and the occasional Toonces the driving cat Photoshop —
With Duke's delicious second-round exit from the NCAA tourney at the hands of West Virginia, this recap of Duke's narrow first-round win is a little dated. But it's still fun to see regional NBC sports anchor Penn Holderness tackle CBS's stranglehold on highlights by using his daughter's dolls to act out the highlights. Riiiight... his "daughter's" dolls. Equally cool? Me acting out 9½ Weeks with my stuffed animals. Mr. Hoppity doesn't like being Kim Basinger, but that's what he gets for being the softest. [FanHaus]
Duke beats Belmont, but everyone is a doll
The Postmen // A Sports Blog // Chicago, IL. —
Fact: Videos done with dolls as you do voice overs for said dolls are usually atrocious. One time I did this for a video in high school. Luckily it was never shown in class that day and I was able to file another more respectable video with my partner that evening and we were only marginally embarrassed with ourselves the next day. (Sidenote: How incredibly pointless was half the shit you did in high school? Really, I have to memorize this whole passage of Wuthering Heights for my quarter project and recite it to the class? Man, I can’t tell you how much that’s ...
Duke = Michael Myers?
Intentional Foul —
When you aren’t allowed to show highlights until the end of the day, sometimes you just have to improvise, much like the sports broadcaster for NBC 17 of Raleigh/Durham had to do.
See, the NCAA doesn’t allow highlights of tournament games to be shown until all the games are completed. Meaning, if you have a broadcast that’s airing while the Tournament games are still going on, you’re pretty much stuck when it comes to covering your local team’s Big Dance exploits…
Unless you are creative. Observe: ...
