Patrick +4Give it up to Howard. He owned this dunk contest.-
And One Just wish I could hype this more than once.

brantheory Best slam dunk contest since Vince won in 2000. -
carty64 Not a dunk, his hand never touched the rim. The tap dunk was better -
Kicks carty64, you obviously never played basketball and/or don't know what a dunk is.-
carty64 obviously

And One Kicks and Carty - everyone on Ball Hype loves basketball, including the two of you. Can we agree it was a magical display of physical prowess and leave it at that? Did you guys know that RedsArmy has come out on this site with his Dwight Howard Super-man crush? OK, I have to know - does your hand really have to touch the rim to be considered a dunk?
-
brantheory I think technically speaking a dunk does require your hand to touch the ball. Then again, he did slam the ball down by throwing it in above the rim. All I know for sure is, the outfit, the music, the slam dunk brought the house down and that's good enough for me.

-
carty64 No doubt he put on a great show, and he jumped about 26 feet in the air....but he didn't "dunk" it. Without the outfit and the lights and music it would have just been about an 8. Nonetheless, I watched it all, I laughed and yelled; it was very entertaining. Cupcake and tap dunk were my 2 fav -
Cupster33 Really how is this any different that any other dunk you see 50 times a week? -

mad0214 I was a little dissapointed to be honest. If you are going to hype a dunk so much, at least it should be a dunk. Its called the dunk contest. I'm a big fan of Dwight's but i thought he good great scores and reactions off of hype while Green got no respect for that dunk in his socks -
Ben Q. Rock Afterwards, Dwight used the cape to clean up the fragments of Kenny Smith's skull.

There has been mention/discussion about whether or not Howard actually dunked the ball, since he technically threw the ball in ... but come on. 2008 Slam Dunk Contest: Dwight Howard Superman Dunk [Video]
Published 2/17/2008 by houroc at SportFiends
Normally I’m not a fan of Superman at all. I’m more of a Batman kinda guy myself but I’ll make an exception in this case. Dwight Howard’s performance as Superman will go down as one of the most creative dunks in Slam Dunk championship history and it was sick. It locked him in as the Slam Dunk Champion. Check it:
The crazy thing is he didn’t even really slam it. He just threw it threw the rim as hard as he could.

Dwight "Superman" Howard Wins The 2008 Slam Dunk Contest, Saves The World
Published 2/17/2008 at FanIQ Blog
This was definitely a pretty good dunk contest this year. We saw some great creativity from both Dwight Howard and Gerald Green.
Green's two best dunks were definitely the "Birthday Cake Dunk" - which was pretty damn ridiculous - and his barefoot through the legs dunk. I know the barefoot dunk didn't win over a lot of people in the stands, but that was a pretty impressive dunk to do barefoot - as Dr. J pointed out.
As for Howard, he just kept coming with great stuff all night. From the modified Andre Iguodala dunk (awesome), to the tap pass off the backboard ...

Ohio’s most underrated athlete? While I admit that I am not the biggest boxing fan in the world, or probably even on my street, I did find myself at a local establishment last night to watch Youngstown, Ohio’s own Kelly Pavlik attempt to repeat what was considered a major upset a few months back: Beat Jermain Taylor. A bit of a bandwagoner, I would not even have known the entire story about Pavlik had it not been for the trusty Internet as well as my friend Dave; both of which made last night’s fight very entertaining.Of course, it also helps when thousands of people at an event in Las Vegas are chanting the name of the guy you want to win. ...
Moon Got Robbed
Published 2/17/2008 by Connor at Hoops Addict
I hate to be the buzz kill because everyone’s stoked about how the dunk contest played out last night, but I can’t get this bad taste out of my mouth. It’s driving me nuts that everyone is congratulating Dwight Howard on winning the dunk contest when the real winner should have been Jamario Moon. In fact, I’m still steamed that Moon didn’t make it to the finals and Gerald Green stole his place but that’s a whole other rant I won’t get into right now.
Everyone is loving the Superman Dunk but it’s nothing compared to Moon’s final dunk. Some will argue that Moon didn’t take off from beyond the tape marking, but Dwight didn’t ...

The FUN is back in the NBA. Dwight Howard's "Superman Dunk" has given the NBA a much needed boost of energy. With this one single moment, joy returned to the NBA. I'm so glad I was watching live! Let's not forget Gerald Green's "Birthday Cake Dunk". While not as funny, it also helped make the slam dunk contest return to center stage. Great job Gerald!

Hit or miss. There are risky ideas that pay off. There are small moves that go unnoticed and pay off. There are risky ideas that don’t pay off. And everything in-between doesn’t count ‘cause nobody cares. Let’s look at this in Chappelle Show terms. Challenging Charlie Murphy to a game of basketball? A risky move that paid off for Prince. Punching Charlie Murphy in the face? Risky move that did not pay off for Rick James. Hit or miss. Signing Charles Haley. Risky move that paid off. Signing Ken Hamlin last year to a one-year contract. Small move that went largely unnoticed ...

The NBA All-Star weekend’s Dunk Competition finally became relevant again - largely due to Gerald Green’s birthday cake, and Dwight Howard’s Superman impression.

Now we're stealing guarantees. If you know me at all, you'll know that I applaud this. Good for Carlos Beltran. Enough blandness and vanilla wafer quotes. Go for the throat. Now he's the lightning rod, and you know that he's gotta know that even an off-handed quote to a bunch of reporters would make it's way towards the headlines ... because that's what quotes like that do. All-Star Wrap-up: Superman Comes to New Orleans
Published 2/18/2008 by Chris at Intentional Foul
With one incredible display of athleticism, Dwight Howard put an indelible stamp on the NBA’s 2008 All-Star festivities from New Orleans. Howard’s Superman layup/dunk was just one of the examples of the talent on display during the weekend. Leading off the fun was Daniel Gibson and his eleven 3-pointers in the Rookie/Sophomore challenge. Gibson led the second-year players to another victory while winning MVP honors.
However, it appears there was some bad blood in Friday Night’s young ‘un showcase. And there was a TO appearance in the Celebrity All-Star ...

Kenny Smith Confuses His John Williams Movie Theme Songs

Great catch by Lozo at WDWGDAB?, and I missed this when it happened, but listen to Kenny Smith go crazy after the Dwight Howard dunk in this clip.... I think he starts out singing the Air Forece Song ("Off We Go, into the Wild Blue Yonder") and then it turns into the theme from "Indiana Jones". Whatever it was that wasn't the song from Superman. Oh yeah....that dunk was insane (and yes it WAS a dunk). I Have A Superb Idea to Finally Make the NHL Just as Popular as the Mighty NBA (Why Don't We Get Drunk And Blog?)

John Denton of Florida Today spoke to Otis Smith over the weekend. Here's some of what Otis said: If I can find a bigger body who can play, well then great. But it has to make sense for us because I'm not doing a deal just because some other teams are dealing. Denton believes the Seattle SuperSonics have made Kurt Thomas and Chris Wilcox available, but that Smith hasn't been able to put together an attractive enough package for them. My belief? Otis will make a deal before the deadline, even if it's a minor one. Carlos Arroyo will probably be the bait. Thanks to TexSUN for posting NBA ...

Those are the clearest signs yet that the Nets and the Dallas Mavericks, after a flurry of obstacles, will soon complete the second of two trades ...

My favourite in this match was the giant that is Dwight Howard. Let’s take a look at how this battle went down: Round One: First Blood Jamario Moon - He finished with a score of 46, but was much more deserving of at least a 48. It was an explosive ...
