Yanks and Rays Collide In Grapefruit Action
BaseballHappenings.com —
You know its going to be a different kind of Rays season when the Yankees are mad with Rays farm hand Elliot Johnson for making a hard nosed baseball play.
My Trophy League Baseball Buzz site alerted me of a revealing article on Rocco Baldelli from his hometown paper: ...
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays Are A Bit Too Fired Up For Spring Training
FanIQ Blog —
You know the old saying that the best part about spring training is that every team has a chance? It's not true at all, especially for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The instant the first pitch is thrown in their opening game, I'm crossing them off my "teams that could win it all list." Along with my Giants, of course.
But at least my Giants aren't decking guys unnecessarily during spring training games. The above video is fringe Tampa Bay player Elliot Johnson slamming into the Yankees' top catching prospect, Francisco Cervelli. And breaking his wrist in the process. Way to go Johnson, you're sure to ...
Sweet Devil Ray-Yankee Wrist-Breaking Collision!
Bugs & Cranks —
Earlier in the week, two-time All Star Carl Crawford set the tone for our Devil Rays season. Saturday D-Ray farm hand Elliot Johnson followed his lead and launched himself Steve Downie-style into some anonymous Yankee backstop in the 9th inning of yesterday’s pretend game. And broke the little bitch’s wrist!
Here’s the sweet, sweet video: ...
Girardi : Bring Me The Head Of Elliot Johnson
Can't Stop The Bleeding —
While New York’s Philip Hughes and Kei Igawa have combined to hold the Twins hitless through 5 innings so far today, we’ll turn our attention to the above incident in the 9th inning of yesterday’s Yankees/Tampa tilt, as covered by Newsday’s Anthony Rieber.
“I think it’s uncalled for,” a visibly angry Joe Girardi, a former catcher, said minutes after Elliot Johnson knocked Francisco Cervelli out of the Rays’ 4-1 exhibition win at Legends Field. “It’s spring training. You’re going to get people hurt. That’s what ...
Where's the Line Between Playing Hard and Playing Dangerous?
FanHouse —
Filed under: New York, Yankees, Rays, AL East, MLB Video, Tampa Bay The collision in the video above resulted in a broken wrist for Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli. Now even though Cervelli probably wasn't going to make the Yankees roster this season, the play and subsequent injury did anger his manager Joe Girardi after the game. "I think it's uncalled for. It's Spring Training. You get people hurt and that's what we've got - we've got Cervelli hurt. I know they had an incident four or five days ago. I'm all for ...
The Francisco Cervelli Collision Video
Depressed Fan —
I wrote about the Francisco Cervelli injury the other day, and both in the comments section of the post, and on other Yankee blogs I've seen quite a few people fall on the opposite side of the argument. Here is the video of the collision.
It looks like a clean play to me with an unfortunate outcome. Does the video change what you think about the play? Does it even matter to you that the play was technically clean?

It still looks like a clean play to me with an unfortunate outcome. Does the video change what you think about the play? Does it even matter to you that the play was technically clean?

The Rays Turn it Up to 11 at Spring Training
The Sporting Blog —
By Chris Mottram Please believe that these spring games aren't meaningless to the Tampa Bay Rays. I suppose this little collision could fall under the category of "when keepin' it real goes wrong": That was some guy named Elliot Johnson drilling some other guy named Francisco Cervelli, and breaking guy No. 2's wrist in the process. But hey, thems the breaks. I'm sure this Johnson dude is just trying to make the squad, and if that means he has to dismantle another human being, then so be it. Especially when said human is on the Yankees. > Rays Are A Bit Too Fired Up For Spring Training ...
Please Do Not Get Smudges On The Yankees' Uniforms; They Have To Last All Season [Pete Rose Approves]
Deadspin —
I'll admit to not being 100 percent up to date on the unwritten rules of baseball; I'm still working on that whole wearing-a-shirt-at-the-dinner-table thing. But it seems to me that if you're a runner heading home, and the catcher is blocking the plate, you do what God intended. You run over the sucker like Mr. Plow.
Yankees' manager Joe Girardi disagrees, however. And Don Zimmer disagrees with the disagreement.
So there was Zim Sunday, saying he was "dumbfounded" to hear that Girardi had taken exception to the way Rays rookie Elliot Johnson had bowled over Francisco Cervelli at the ...
The Cervelli/Johnson Incident: Rays Index talks with My Baseball Bias
N/A —
The Elliot Johnson/Francisco Cervelli collision during Saturday’s game between the Yankees and Rays has certainly given writers, bloggers, commenters and fans of both teams plenty to talk about. At the heart of the matter is the question over whether it was a “hard-ball” play or a “dirty” play. As can be expected, most Yankee fans saw it as a cheap shot, while most Rays fans were happy to see one of their players finally smack the big bad wolf in the mouth.
I decided to ask my good friend and fellow blogger, Cork Gaines, editor of Rays Index to join me in a spirited exchange of emails about ...
Yankees and Rays Brawl in Spring Training Rematch
FanIQ Blog —
You had to expect something would happen this afternoon in the first Rays-Yankees meeting since Francisco Cervelli had his wrist broken by a hard play at the plate.
How dare a player trying to make the roster try hard. The Yanks whined all weekend about the play and feel Spring Training games should be taken lightly. Well, that is everyone except Shelley Duncan.
From Peter Abraham's live blog of today's game:
WE HAVE A BRAWL
Shelley Duncan (of course) started the top of the second with a single. He tried to go to second as the ball ...
