Can You Smell The Sidney/Ovie In The Air? [NHL Closer]
Deadspin —
The NHL Closer is written by Greg Wyshynski, of FanHouse and The Fourth Period. He is also the author of Glow Pucks And 10-Cent Beer.
Rampant speculation and unmitigated giddiness are hallmarks of the NHL Closer (along with gratuitous, yet strangely relevant photos of scantily clad Ice Girls). So with Carolina winning convincingly and the Penguins beating the Flyers (a Georges Laraque/Riley Cote brawl for your viewing pleasure after the jump), let's begin the puckhead squealing: The chances for an Ovechkin/Crosby battle in Round One of the playoffs are looking pretty dang good. Finally, a Stanley Cup ...
Pens Laraque Says Riley Cote Is NHL's Pound for Pound Toughest Player
The700Level.com - Philly Sports & Minutiae —
When George Laraque of the Penguins and the Flyers' Riley Cote mixed it up again on Wednesday, the disparity in their size was evident, with Laraque outweighing Cote by at least 50 pounds and standing a good couple inches taller. But Cote didn't back down, just as he hasn't all season, despite being one of the league's smaller enforcers.
Laraque, who is generally considered one of the top two fighters in either conference, paid Cote a huge compliment after the fight, telling the Post-Gazette that Cote is "pound-for-pound ... the toughest guy in the NHL." Often that whole "pound for pound" bit is another way to ...

If you ask me, this barely visible mashup of colors and shapes could very well be the tipping point in the upcoming Eastern Conference Finals series. Its from a fight that happened just over a month ago. Riley Cote decided to fight BGL, despite having lost to him earlier in the season. While this fight was a shade above a draw in favor of BGL, Georges landed a left that sent Cote's helmet flying 30-some odd feet down the ice. Video is provided below, so you know what I'm talking about. Even if you're a casual Pens fan, you've probably seen this video. With the Flyers expected to play ...
Laraque and Cote: Hells Angels and flying helmets
Puck Daddy —
We've had about as many memorable fights this postseason as we've had Ottawa Senators games. Yet there have been two stories dominating the Philadelphia Flyers/Pittsburgh Penguins news cycle, and one of them is a celebration of potential pugilism: The Big Georges Laraque effect, and how Flyers players like Riley Cote will have to counteract it. (The other big story, of course, is the loss of Kimmo Timonen to a blood clot in his left ankle; as devastating an injury as the Flyers could possibly suffer, considering how dominating he's been defensively and on special teams. This is a loss on the ...
