Video: Green’s Birthday Cake Dunk, Dwight’s Superman Slam
MVN Outsider —
What’s this? People are paying attention to the NBA’s Dunk Contest again? The contest has become–dare I say it–relevant once again?
Indeed, I missed All-Star Saturday (I attended a stand-up performance by the great Frank Caliendo, and thoroughly enjoyed his Madden, Barkley, Bill Walton, and Jim Rome impressions), but having seen videos of two dunks performed by Dwight Howard and Gerald Green respectively, I’m impressed.
My biggest gripe with the Dunk Contest has been a lack of originality…in recent years, it seemed like most of the dunks performed had already been done before. There was a lack ...
Thank you Dwight and Gerald!
Blazer Talk —
The FUN is back in the NBA. Dwight Howard's "Superman Dunk" has given the NBA a much needed boost of energy. With this one single moment, joy returned to the NBA. I'm so glad I was watching live! Let's not forget Gerald Green's "Birthday Cake Dunk". While not as funny, it also helped make the slam dunk contest return to center stage. Great job Gerald!
The New Age of the Dunk Competition
Motown Sports Revival —
I’d like to comment on Gerald Green’s barefoot dunk in hopefully less boring fashion than Dr. J. Dwight Howard was fantastic. He deserved to win. However, the most underrated dunk in the history of dunks was Green’s barefoot, between-the-legs dunk. I’m not sure I could even touch the net in bare feet. He pigeonholed himself by doing a "normal" between-the-legs dunk earlier in the competition but he was robbed of his proper due. Darryl Dawkins even knocked Green’s shoes off the judges table in a sign of disrespect for the dunk. ...
2008 All-Star game recap
NBA Rock —
Whew! That was amazing. I thought for a second that the West’s run in the 4th quarter was going to be the end of the East’s chances of winning the 2008 All-Star game and put my prediction to shame. But then my boy Ray Allen turned it on with 3 3-pointers, bringing his game-total to 5 3-pointers — 1 shy of the All-Star record of 6 set by Mark Price.
Allen, puts up the shot…SPLASH! Nothing new…like he was going to miss anyways. If it weren’t for Ray Allen’s heroics in the 4th quarter, the East wouldn’t have won. It’s because of this that ...

Gerald Green's "Birthday Cake" Dunk

Gerald Green gets another chance
Ball Don't Lie —
After tempting us in Boston,
flaming out in Minnesota, and barely showing
up in his hometown of Houston,
high-flyer (legally required to call him that) Gerald Green has
signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks. It's not mentioned in the
story from the Dallas Morning News,
but it's hard to imagine the deal being guaranteed, and it's likely for the
league minimum.
Now, Green has had his moments (after the jump), and he did win the Slam Dunk Contest in 2007, but to me he's
known for possibly the most damning hoops anecdote of the modern era. And by "modern,"
I mean "post-Stromile ...
Dunk Contest Needs Better Dunkers, Judges
The Sporting Blog —
Not sure why I'm so incensed about All-Star Weekend already, but about this year's dunk contest: This will be the worst since the infamous "wheel of fortune" contest of 2002.
First, I hate the field. Dwight Howard's sticker dunk was classic, and he would've changed history with a 12-foot goal. The Superman "dunk"? The cape was corny, and while Howard indeed defied gravity by getting perpendicular to the hoop, the finish was garbage. I guess it was a crowd-pleaser, but come on, do costumes really count as innovation? The sticker dunk similarly banked on the big man's sheer jumping ability, but ...
All-Star Weekend Sucked: WWGD?
I *Heart* Celtics —
The NBA All-Star festivities are by far the best of any professional sport. There isn't much debate to this considering that the Pro Bowl is unwatchable and Bud Selig manages to F up the MLB All-Star game every year. With the addition of HORSE to this year's festivities, expectations were high for the NBA. In the end however, All-Star Weekend turned out to be pretty mediocre. While some attribute this to the way the recession has dried up most of the parties and NBA shenanigans, others feel its because superstars these days are becoming less competitive. I have a different theory. The lack of Gerald Green. From the artful craft of ...
