College football has changed quite a bit over the years. This wishbone has been replaced by the spread offense. Nebraska and Miami have been replaced as powerhouses by Missouri and West Virginia. Notre Dame coaches went from winning national championships to winning pie eating contests. But one thing that will always be a fundamental part of the game at any level is that at no time will 'Giving an Opponent the Business' be tolerated (38 second mark): ...

That’s ACC Ref Ron Cherry with the call of the year, giving the verbal description of a personal foul committed by a Maryland lineman as “givin’ him the business.” We’re pretty sure this is an ode to a famous call made during a New York Jets game in the seventies, so Ron’s actually getting kind of meta-meta with his calls here. Good to see a classicist working in the ranks of the officiating–we always suspected referees of being the literary types on the field. HT: William. ...

Unfortunately for us, not all college referees possess the awesomeness of Ron Cherry. Most of the best have graduated to the NFL; the rejects get piled on in the college and high school level. So in the college ranks (as we’ve been reminded recently in the hoops game), we’re prone to a plethora of bad calls affecting the outcome of many a college football game.
