The End Has No End

Joe Paterno is the game's grand old man for being a big winner while running a straight ship, encouraging diverse interests in his players, giving back to his school and occasionally showing up to games wearing pants with little cartoon whales on them, but his "time has come" status has been a sort of unspoken consensus for most of this decade, at least, since the sudden onset of Penn State's wobbly consistency in 2000. Hence the brilliant 'JoPa Wants Brains!' pastiche, the perfect way to say "he's too old" without disrespecting a statesman by actually saying, "he's too old." Which, clearly, he is. ...

Things I've Learned From Joe Paterno

Joe Pa is at it again, and the man never ceases to amaze me. I started thinking about how he has proven without a shadow of a doubt that letting people’s off the hook for their actions because ‘Oh he’s just old” is a reasonable excuse for just about anything you do. I once knew someone who shared a theory with me that I now hold as a personal goal: When you turn 60 you take your pants off and never have to put them on again. He called it the Pantsless Revolution, and it makes me think that the only person I know that would not be questioned is the one and only Joe Paterno. Lets run down the list of Joe Pa’s feats that have been wiped off his slate because at age ...

JoPa "coaching" from upstairs today, maybe longer
Published 9/20/2008 by Matt Hinton at Dr. Saturday
Joe Paterno doesn't call the plays on offense or defense, so if he can't yell at the officials, I'm not sure what, exactly, he plans to be doing while Penn State is running up the score on Temple: Penn State head coach Joe Paterno has had problems moving in recent weeks. Speaking on his Thursday night radio show, the 81-year-old acknowledged one of his legs has been bothering him. Now it appears Paterno may spend Saturday afternoon in the Beaver Stadium coaching booth when No. 16 Penn State (3-0) hosts 1-2 Temple. Kickoff is at noon. "May spend" = "will spend" as of this morning. I'm ...

An open call for bootlegs of Paterno's ill-fated onside kick
Published 9/23/2008 by Matt Hinton at Dr. Saturday
When Joe Paterno migrated to the press box for the second half of Penn State's massacre of Temple, I guess it was assumed he was feeling some lingering effects from the ugly broken leg he suffered on the sideline against Wisconsin in 2006. Not so fast, says the Philadelphia Inquirer -- it's a much more darkly hilarious mental image than that: "Let's not get into me," Paterno said when asked about his leg. "All right? Let's talk about the football game." Paterno hurt his right leg three days before the season opener against Coastal Carolina when he tried an onside kick during ...
