PrepChamps I seriously can't believe he went down from that "hit." was more like a love tap...-
coach_prince That play alone would sum up how pitiful the have played this season... Where is the heart of these over paid cry babies? They all need to take a trip to OZ and get some heart!!! A bunch of "Tin Men"-

Crazee4NYGIANTS Oz never gave the Tin Man anything he didn't already have.

mannyfresh92 of course he went down, the ref punched him in the chin, just about everybody would have at least stumbled!
-
-
bill14224 It looked to me like he wouldn't get much further, with two tacklers closing on him, but my God that umpire has to get out of the way or fall down, not stick a forearm in his face! Disciplinary action is coming!-
op8132 The officials are a part of the field and are allowed to take the necessary actions such as ducking, dodging, running out of way or striking a playing to protect themselves from being injuried. There won't be any disciplinary action in this case.

jdail36 see i told them i could open field tackle, that will teach them they shouldnt of cut me. a real man would of ran me down. sissy -
kvan Players try to avoid hitting the refs. They see an older man, no pads, the stripes....causes a reaction where they don't lower the shoulder and run thru, they try to avoid hurting the ref. It's that simple, same thing with the LSU game. It's like when you turn around an bump into someone by mistake-you try to soften the blow any means necessary, sometimes you end up falling just to lessen the impact. -
hwoarang Funny pics! There should be a slowmo video.... -
iykwim i dont think he fell from the hit. it was probably more just trying to dodge the reff. these players get penalized for anything. not a penalty in a game but for every little thing they do wrong even something small like if they wear something they get fined. he probably just didnt want to hit the ref and cmon use ur common sense, a 250 pound football player running as fast as he can versus a 50 something year old ref just standing there. if he wanted to he would of knocked the living sh*t out of that ref. -
Riphly The ref would do better to just stand still and plant himself instead of trying to guess where the player is going and adjust. This ref actually moved, accidentally of course, into the runners path and adjusted in the same direction as the runner, again by accident. The ref needs a little more guts and trust in the agility of the player to avoid him. -
Flacco5 Get real guys. wrong place, right time, player off balance and the ref simply reacting... But very very funny! The refs should have a good laugh and the player will be playfully harassed. Remember; It's Just A Game!!!!-
spacinjangler Well said.

jiggaman7 he went down because he didnt want to accidently injure the referee. y would he try to run over the referee thats stupid. -
hotwings4me first off ..that ref is too old to be out there, he had no idea what to do and wasnt even able to get his ass out of the way. he cost that guy a big play and should be punished. -

Ajt123 Stupidest comment ever. -First of all there is no way that players in Football are weak in comparison to Rugby players. NFL players train literally there entire lives, from Highschool ball into college. Then, only a select few, the absolute strongest and fastest, get drafted to the NFL. So, out of the thousands of college players, only the toughest make it. -Second. All Team sports require a group effort, for thats why they are team sports. "rugby is an organized sport because the line that the runner goes through has to be cordinated." HAHA you just explained what it takes to successfully run in the NFL as well. BOTH sports take the toughest and strongest from that sport. THATS why they are called PROFESSIONALS!

rhumphries Finally the blog got sensible about the two sports and those who are fair weather no nothing fans got swept away on the board. You can only compare the two sports because of the physical nature of the two sports. American football is a much rougher sport than rugby. The players are bigger, stronger, and faster and spend a lot of time year round to stay at those levels. Even with the physical nature in rugby it still requires a lot more endurance training and if compared it should be compared to Australian Rules Football. Yes, many American football players are overpaid and definitely there are too many that can make fools out of themselves after they tackle a guy after a 12 yard gain. Don't try though to compare the level of popularity of American Football to rugby. It's not even close and there are a lot of countries who have established AMERICAN football leagues. See what happens when a couple of U.S. teams go play in another country. You could sell enough tickets to fill these stadiums 3 times over. It was just a funny play that the ref happened to be where he was and he re-acted more to protect himself and I believe the player re-acted to keep from running over the referee. These referees are in pretty good shape themselves no matter what the age. And believe me anybody can be taken down if hit just in the right way. -
sness Kind of reminds me of Jeff Garcia when he's about to get sacked! Hits the ground like a little girl! "Ahhhh, please don't hurt me!" -
larrybolling This article and video was about a referee and a player. How could so many of you football devotees use this only to make your comments which are totally unrelated to the real event?
What are you watching? TRY WATCHING THE VIDEO AND FOCUS ON THE OFFICIAL FROM THE START! IT WAS THE player WHO RAN INTO THE OFFICIAL.
In defense of the player, it appears that he came toward the official aggressively thinking that he was another player. On behalf of the official, he merely reacted to the player's move, and his own move was purely defensive.
As to the criticism of the player having lost his strength to allow the older official to DECK him, that is not the case, either.
There is just too much speculation in many of the comments left here.
As to who plays what sport, I myself can only say that I served in the U.S. Army, having played neither American football nor rugby. Still, I respect and honor those who have played either of those sports.
-
JessiJ73 That's funny. But I want to know how bad the penalty would've been if he had just run over the ref? (he is part of the field isn't he?) -
devildog It looks to me that he tried to use the ref as a shield from the defense. And what does you being in the army have to do with anything, congrats you 2nd place puss. You were almost a man. Semper Fi-
larrybolling You might be right about the shield idea.
My remark about being in the Army signifies two things:
1. I can relate to either of the sports as combative, but not fatal. Both are admirable. I simply had to be physically active as a trained soldier, as sportsmen do.
2. I had to leave the U.S., and learned to respect and not "bad-mouth" things dear to people in other countries.
And then we come to you: did you learn to bad-mouth people in the Marines? I know so many Marines who are not so quick to insult people as you have done to me.
...but the name you have chosen to be identified by here indicates that you also insult yourself. I am hopeful that you are neither a "devil" nor a "dog."
Without knowing you, I can still acknowledge, until you give further proof, that you are a man. (So why don't you drop the misnomer?)

GalPalDJ Hey Guys, Most of you are examples of how our society is decaying. Many of the views about the football official downing the athlete were like people who take the side of the offender in crimes. No regard is given to the offended!! All the comments are just "opinions," everybody has one!! Let's see if we can get the view of those involved and see how your opinions differ from the FACTS!! (I wonder too, how many of those providing comment tried to wear the shoes of Darby before commenting). that's My opinion...

Brandie_in_Colorado It looked as if the referee did try to get out of the way and when push came to shove he did what he had to. -

FourthandGoal That really wasn't Garth DeFelice. It was Chuck Norris. -
lifdaname humorous video. i would agree he pulled up to soften the blow to the ref, who appears to forearm him in the process
That's One Hell of a Right Jab [NFL Update]
Deadspin —
This picture comes from earlier today when umpire Garth DiFelice defended himself from a charging Kenneth Darby with a textbook right cross to the chin. Or at least that's the way it looks to me. UPDATE: Black Sports Online has come through with video of the assault. As for the unrelated, non-punch news... • Falcons at Vikings Not much has changed since we last looked in, except of course for the score. Atlanta still leads over Minnesota, but they've opened things up after Justin Blalock recovered a Matt Ryan fumble in the endzone for another score. • Jets at ...
Kenneth Darby Gets JACKED UP!!! by NFL Umpire Garth DeFelice
Robert Littal Presents The Infamous BlackSportsOnline —
As most of you know I was born and raised in Saint Louis, Missouri. Considering my profession I have had the ability to travel to a lot of places and right now I think I am ready to be adopted by another city. The only thing that could be worse than being a Saint Louis sports fan (which I have never been even though I live here) is being a Detroit sport fan.
The Rams are a disgrace, but when a NFL Umpire is taking out your running back like he is Ray Lewis you know it is time to close down shop. I understand Kenneth Darby is just trying to make a living, but come on homie that is an old man ...
And the crowd goes "BRUUUUUCE!"
Mining the Gold Rush —
In WR Isaac Bruce's first game back in St. Louis since signing with the 49ers this past spring, he made sure that his return would be memorable. In the Niners' 17-16 comeback win, Bruce achieved two milestones in the fourth quarter to help the 49ers win their sixth game of the season. ...
Ref Garth DiFelice Tackles Kenneth Darby Of The Rams
FanIQ Blog —
I guess football referees at any level this year have had enough of players running them over. Sunday in the 49ers/Rams game, ref Garth DiFelice decided to deliver a right cross to the jaw of Kenneth Darby when Darby dared to try and knock him down. ...
Kenneth Darby Tackled By Ref - Video
Dejuiced! Sports News with No Boundaries —
Kenneth Darby is a little known running back for the St. Louis Rams. Expect him to be even less well known after he’s out of the NFL for good after the end of the season. Heck, the Rams might not wait and cut him before their last game of the season.
Why? Kenneth Darby got tackled by a ref. Seriously. Watch the Kenneth Darby video at the end of this entry. Prepare to laugh.
In the video, Darby catches a pass and then tries to make a move but suddenly a 5-foot-8, 145 pound ref is in his way. The ref, just by standing there, made an open field tackle on Darby.
Here’s the video that Kenneth Darby wants to keep far, far away from his ...
Rams’ Kenneth Darby Taken Out by Ref Garth DeFelice
Larry Brown Sports —
When South Carolina’s Stephen Garcia was taken out by a referee in the LSU game, many of us thought the ref had some money on the game. Perhaps the same can be said for Garth DeFelice who took out Rams running back Kenneth Darby with this strong jab.
MDS at FanHouse makes the strong point that Patrick Willis got credit for the tackle. See, that’s what happens when you build up a strong reputation around the press box. I’m glad the guy I’m playing in fantasy football doesn’t have Willis on his defense otherwise that would ...

With Leather - Sports news and gossip, panda sex, and the occasional Toonces the driving cat Photoshop —
Yesterday’s Niners-Rams game was so completely unexceptional and dull in every way that the only way the NFL could spice it up was to let the referees start actively hitting people, as umpire Garth DiFelice did when Kenneth Darby took a wrong turn in the middle of the field.
And of course I support this. The only thing more enjoyable than a referee gumming up a play and tackling a football player is a referee gumming up a play and getting demolished by a football player. Call me sadistic (my hookers certainly do), but I like it when the people without pads get run over.
The video is after the jump, but I’m not ...

The Scoop
Comments on: Rotoscoop.com —
By Dalton Del Don
Going 1-5 in six championship games and an ugly 3-13 ATS this week, I’m calling 12/21/2008 “Black Sunday” in the course of history. Actually, I had fun on the day, tailgating at the Raiders game with my buddies, rain and all. And let me tell you, some classy individuals showed up at McAfee Coliseum on Sunday, and since I actually didn’t watch most of Week 16’s carnage, it’s almost as if it didn’t truly happen, and assuredly, outcomes would have been different had I willed my teams with my own two eyes. Of course, the results did in fact occur, and in hindsight, I couldn’t have picked a better Sunday to leave the TV behind. Alas, I ...
