Tuesday Morning Headlines/Open Thread
Published 5/6/2008 by carlheartscubs at A League of Her Own - Front Page
Yes, it's really been 10 years. Rather than start this diary right off with the craptacular play of the 2008 Cubs, we'll take a look back to one of the greatest days in Cub history. The day Kid K ruled the world From the Trib: Perhaps the most amazing aspect of Kerry Wood's record-tying 20-strikeout game of May 6, 1998, was that the 20-year-old rookie didn't really cash in on his newfound fame. That's almost unheard of in this day and age, when even the smallest accomplishment by a professional athlete is often ...

10 Years Ago Today
Published 5/6/2008 by Bunkie Perkins at Friends of the Program
We were sitting in our fraternity house preparing to trudge to some inane English Comp class (clearly we didnt take enough of those) when we poked our head in someone’s room and saw that the Cubs/Astros day game was just getting started.  Thats when we saw a 20 year old Kerry Wood dealing absolute filth from ...

Happy 10th Anniversary, Kerry
Published 5/6/2008 by Bad Kermit at Hire Jim Essian!
It’s a bit pathetic that the mainstream media made a far bigger deal about the 25th anniversary of Lee Elia’s tirade last week than they have about the 10th anniversary of one of the greatest MLB games ever pitched. Enjoy reliving Kid K’s masterpiece and hating Kevin Orie just one more time. ShareThis

Kerry Wood 20K: 10 Year Anniversary
Published 5/6/2008 by David Appelman at FanGraphs Baseball
The New York Daily News recaps Kerry Wood’s incredible 20 strikeout performance all the way back on May 6th, 1998. The SportsCenter highlights are a must watch: (hat tip: Baseball Think Factory)

Ten Years Since Wood's Amazing Game [Kerry Wood]
Published 5/6/2008 by Leitch at Deadspin
We love reminders of just how old we really are. Newsweek informed us that it has been 10 years since "Seinfeld" went off the hair, which is just jaw-dropping, when you think about it. But that's nothing like Friends Of The Program's revelation: It has been 10 years since Kerry Wood's 20-strikeout game against the Astros. We were already out of college by then — as we said, we're quite old — but we, like everybody within shouting distance of a television, sat rapt while watching perhaps the greatest pitching performance ever. We can't imagine anyone ever improving on that. Twenty strikeouts? One (questionable) ...

A Decade and A Dozen DL Trips Ago
Published 5/6/2008 by R.J. Anderson at Beyond the Box Score: Front Page Posts
20 year old Chicago Cubs phenom Kerry Wood struck out 20 Houston Astros over 9 innings while only allowing one hit -- a grounder that sneaked under third baseman Kevin Orie's glove. Wood was never going to top that performance, but his career since is good statistically, if not disappointing health wise. We'll never be able to answer where Wood ...

TIME TO FEEL OLD: 10 YEARS SINCE 20Ks HAPPENED
Published 5/6/2008 by Bryan at OUT OF RIGHT FIELD
Remember when Sportscenter showed, you know, highlights? And didn't have guys who sucked in the pros or as GMs that babbled for a half hour over mundane topics? Anyways, I'll never forget this game. I was a freshman in high school and we got a rare day off from baseball practice and got to come straight home after school. It was fate that brought me home to watch this game. I got home and saw innings 4-9. Still the greatest pitching performance I have ever seen to this day. ...

Kerry Wood's 20 K, Roger Bannister's Sub-4 Mile Anniversary
Published 5/6/2008 at FanIQ Blog
Since the sports world is a little slow today, time to reflect on the anniversary of two things very fast - Kerry Wood's arm and Roger Bannister's legs. May 6th, 1954, an Oxford University student set out to accomplish a most challenging goal - break the 4-minute mile - a feat that was previously said to be impossible. Here's some old school news footage of the event. As someone who ran competitively throughout school and still fancies himself "a runner," I've always enjoyed this quote from Bannister: "The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets ...

K Is For Kerry
Published 5/7/2008 by FrostKing at Frost King Baseball
If you like baseball then you owe it to yourself to check this out: It's the highlights of Kerry Wood's 20 strike-out game, which happened 10 years ago, today. I wish I had watched it live, because that is some really sick stuff - he was still throwing in the upper 90's consistently back then, and that curve/slider had a ton of sharp, late break. It didn't look like the ump had too big of a strike-zone, and the one hit he gave up could have been called an error (and may have been if it had happened later in the game). It was probably the most dominant pitching performance in history - 1 H, 0 BB, 20 K, and the hitters had absolutely no chance.

The Gist: Game 33
Published 5/7/2008 by Daft Funk at Thunder Matt's Saloon
The Game: After yesterday's debacle, the Cubs 3-0 win over the Reds today was a pleasant surprise. Why a surprise? Aaron Harang is pretty good, and without Matt "I Own Harang" Murton in the lineup, I wouldn't have been surprised if we would have let this one slip away. But as good as Harang was, Carlos Zambrano was ...

Kerry Woods 20 strikeout game: I told you Kerry Wood was once good
Published 5/7/2008 by houroc at SportFiends
Ok so I know a lot my younger readers probably didn’t believe me when I said yesterday that Kerry Wood was actually good at some point in his career.  You guys were probably like ‘fuck outta here’ but heres the proof.  Ha! It’s been 10 years and no one has matched this yet.  Back then we thought we’d found the second coming of Roger Clemens…. Oops. Tags: kerry wood, 20 strikeouts

Let's Hit Rewind on Buzz Bissinger's Play Article

"Maybe you've heard -- Buzz Bissinger is in the bloggy sports news ether today. Several people sent us Buzz's piece on Kerry Wood in the New York Times magazine Play from about a year ago. I read the article from start to finish. It's artfully written, evocative, unPlaschkely poetic -- and deliberately, wrongheadedly misleading. Buzz Bissinger, such a gifted wordsmith and storyteller, weaves a..."

Zambrano Leads Cubs to 3-0 Shutout of Reds
Carlos Zambrano tossed eight innings of three-hit ball as the Cubs shut out the Reds 3-0 at Great American Ball Park. Zambrano fanned three to improve to 5-and-1 on the season and Kerry Wood closed it out with a one-hit ninth for his fifth save. Aramis Ramirez plated a run for Chicago after missing three games with a sore left wrist when he was hit by a pitch last Friday. Ronny Cedeno drove ...
How you know you have a struggling franchise
Have you heard? Anyone? Has anyone told you what Tuesday, May 6th was? No? I was. Several times, baseball fans frantically told me that 10 years ago on that date, Kerry Wood pitched his 20 strikeout game. If you know a Cub fan, I'm sure they were happy to tell you about this. Now, I'm not usually in the business of Cub bashing (I leave that to Steve), but sweet merciful poop. How bad is your

The day Kerry Wood was (nearly) unhittable
It must be a slow afternoon when most of the major baseball sites are all jumping on the same theme and making matters stranger, that it happened a decade ago. Ten years ago, Kerry Wood made his biggest impact on the game, striking out 20 Houston Astros in the rain at Wrigley Field and giving a generation of Cubs fans false hope that their long journey towards a championship was nearly over. ...

No, the Gagne is Not Always Greener

Carlos Marmol Envisioned Replacing Kerry Wood
Cubs manager Lou Piniella's recent decision to let setup reliever Carlos Marmol face six consecutive batters in the eighth and ninth innings -- and chalk up six consecutive outs -- may set the stage for Marmol's promotion over Kerry Wood to the closer's roll, according to XM baseball talkshow host Rob Dibble . Basing his prediction on Piniella's track record, Dibble said ...
Kerry Wood
Kerry Wood of the Cubs was reassured by Lou Piniella he is still the closer for the Cubs even after blowing 3 saves in his last 4 chances. I don't buy this at all. A closer who is blowing saves on a consistent basis will not last long as a closer and for owners who have Wood, you better make sure you have some insurance. Go out and grab Bob Howry or Carlos Marmol of the Cubs just in case ...
Cubs catch bad break in 4-3 loss
The Cubs were on their way to wrapping up their second consecutive win with a 3-1 lead entering the 9th. Kerry Wood faltered, giving up a 2-run double into deep right field by Ryan Braun as the Brewers went ahead 4-3. These type of games sting a little after a 19-5 blowout the previous day. Kerry just had an unfortunate outing and has to look past it as he's been pitching quality innings in 13 ...
I Do Not Think Lou's Stupid, or Something
Further proof that I adore Lou Piniella. Look, yesterday sucked pretty hard. The Cubs staked Carlos a 2-run lead against a pretty good pitcher in Gallardo. Carlos Marmol came in and dominated, as usual. Kerry Wood blew a two-run lead and lost the game. I hate it just as much as you do. I know, I know...Ryan Dempster only blew three saves all year last year and Wood has three through 31 games. ...
Kerry Wood Must Die!
I want to choke the living fuck out of Kerry Wood right now. The closer role could quite possibly be the most important role on a baseball squad these days. You need someone who has the following qualities: 1)Strikeouts 2)Laser Rocket Arm 3)Start Strong, Finish Strong 4)Low ERA Kerry Wood has 1 of those qualities. The guy has a history of starting and ending badly. His 15 ...
Kerry Wood blows save as Cubs fall 4-3 to Brewers…
The previous 2 times that Kerry Wood blew a save this season, the Cubs came back to win both games. They couldn’t duplicate that success on Thursday. Milwaukee roughed up Wood for a three-run 9th inning, beating Chicago 4-3 at Wrigley Field & have now won 4 of the 6 head-to-head meetings of the 2008 season.
Cubs Lose; Lou Piniella Gets Cranky
It's certainly not anything out of the ordinary for a baseball manager to get enraged. Whether it be a tough loss, an annoying question, a bad call: there's really no other job in all of sports where you see dudes flip their lid more often. (Unless you're Rasheed Wallace maybe.) So let us revel in Lou Piniella 's first mini blowup, after Kerry Wood -- hi Buzz ! -- let up three runs in the ...
Cubs Lose Game, Series, First Place
The roller coaster ride continues. The Cubs had this one.  They had it in the bank.  The Cubs had a 3-1 lead going into the ninth, going for the series win, and Kerry Wood blows it in the ninth. After the joy of Wednesday night's game, this one was particulary painful for a few reasons 1. A win Thursday would have won the series for the Cubs 2. Zambrano played a marvelous ...
Game Recap: Brewers 4, Cubs 3. Kerry Wood blo-erm, fai-uhh, doesn't save another game
I have to be careful about how I describe what happened tonight. Apparently, if I use the term "blows" and the name "Kerry Wood" in the same sentence, then certain jabrones out there might claim that I said Kerry Wood sucks and will then scold me for having done so. So, bare with me and my self-edits. Our closer is now pitching like the Kerry Wood of yore. Any time ...
