'Trade' to Japan leaves Kendrick in shock
Published 2/18/2008 at MLB - Sports Rumors - Yahoo! Sports
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick was shocked to learn that he'd been traded to the Yomiuri Giants in Japan for a player named "Kobayashi Iwamura." "I don't know what to think right now," he told reporters outside his locker shortly after getting the news from assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. Had he truly been thinking, he would have realized that such deals are prohibited. And with a little digging he could have found out that there is no Kobayashi Iwamura playing in Japan. The "trade" was, in fact, a prank. The ruse was orchestrated by pitcher Brett ...

This Phillies prank on Kyle Kendrick works on so many levels
Published 2/18/2008 at Big League Stew
There are still eight months left in the 2008 season, but the rest of the 29 teams are going to need the time if they're going to top the prank the Phillies played on young Kyle Kendrick over the weekend. If you haven't seen it yet (video here), the setup went like this: Manager Charlie Manuel called the 23-year-old pitcher into his office and told him he had been traded to the Yomiuri Giants for a player named "Kobayashi Iwamura." The ruse, expertly orchestrated by Brett Myers (who else?), worked so well that Kendrick was shocked into silence for most of the trick. Couldn't even stop to realize that MLB ...

Weekend Sports Notes

Et Tu, NASCAR? As sports continually are emasculated, it becomes less and less surprising that events become less about the sport and more about the spectacle and Disney-generated BS. We had the sheer, uncomfortable displeasure this weekend of getting to watch Chubby Checker lip sync "The Twist" prior to the Daytona 500...followed by Michael McDonald singing an adult contemporary pop song as NASCAR and racing legends alike awkwardly were forced to watch from the very same stage. I've said it before, I'm not a NASCAR fan, but taking a gritty sport that was founded on the guts of bootleggers and making it into ...

Phillies are staying loose early on.

Phillies are staying loose early on. I think the Kendrick prank has gotten enough talk by now that most people have seen it, and in case you missed it, here’s a chance to view it. Kendrick prank. I’m glad to see that the Phillies are getting news on ESPN because of how relaxed they are. Also, pulling a prank like that requires a close chemistry among the team. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Charlie Manuel is a great manager. I know as soon as the season begins, there’s going to be head hunters out there calling for his job. But sometimes, knowing strategy isn’t the only requirement for managaing a team. By keeping them ...

Phillies Prank: Kyle Kendrick Traded To Japanese League For Kobayashi Iwamura
Published 2/18/2008 at FanIQ Blog
Best. Prank. Ever. Brett Myers might not be the best husband in the world, but the man sure can pull of a prank. Wow. From his agent being in on it, an actual transaction written up on Phillies stationary, and Charlie Manuel offering up advice from his time in the Far East you had to feel a little bad for Kyle Kendrick who had no choice but to believe the ridiculous scenario presented to him. Even the media was in on it, which is impressive that they were able to keep quiet. "I wanted to cry," Kendrick said. "I'm going to call my agent and tell ...

Spring Struck As Jeff Blair wrote on Saturday in the Globe On Baseball Blog, "Major League pitchers [are] throw[ing] Major League bullpen sessions to Major League catchers." It doesn't get much better than that. Although, I suppose having Major League hitters involved somehow would be sort of cool. Most of the team has already arrived at camp and I'm sure that if you close your eyes in the dressing room, the magic of a mediocre team assembling is almost tangible. To mark the beginning of another Spring Training, every newspaper in Canada reported that B.J. Ryan is ahead of schedule on his ...

Kyle Kendrick to Japan?
Published 2/18/2008 by Joe Willett at Bleacher Report
Kyle Kendrick is a 23-year old pitcher for the Philedelphia Phillies. Brett Myers decided that Kendrick should have a heart attack. He orchestrated, with the help of manager Charlie Manuel (right) and even Kendrick's agent, a full trade to Japan that included Hendrick. Of course none of this was real. Not even the Japanese player (who is actually the Japanese competetive eater) is real. But Kendrick was on the verge of tears when he was called into Manuel's office and was explained. The trade was taken to a whole new level when the Phillies staged a full press conference to announce the trade between the ...

Published 2/18/2008 by houroc at SportFiends
This is hiliarious.  Ok so we all know that it is tradition to play pranks in the clubhouse in baseball but this one has got to take the cake. The prank starts off with Pitcher Kyle Kendrick being called into Manager Charlie Manuel’s office where he’s told that he’s been traded to a Japanese team for “Kobayashi Iwamura.”  For those of you who don’t know, thats the guy that eats all the hot dogs. The Phillies went all out on this one, they even got the press to get his reaction.  The really funny part is that somehow, Kendrick forgot that you can’t make a trade from the Majors to Japan.  ...

Presidents Day Links: Fat Miguel Cabrera Loses Weight, Kyle Kendrick Gets Punked

Notes From Around Spring Training Newly acquired Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera came to camp for the Tigers having lost at least 15 lbs. This is good for Cabrera, obviously, who has taken a lot of heat for his weight. He is excited and motivated now, playing for a contender. Baseball Prospectus’s PECOTA projects a .300/.374/.515 season with 28 home runs, but I think that’s a huge low-ball. I’m thinking Monster season with improved defense–he can only go up in that department. Colorado Rockies pitcher Ubalndo Jiminez put on ...

NY Mets: Spring Spewings

The NY Post reports on Beltran getting plunked by Santana, after Carlos (among others) complained that they had enough of facing rookies in batting practice who had something to prove. Manager Willie Randolph put him in the batters box against the best control pitcher on the Mets, Johan Santana. Johan promptly beaned Beltran in the arm, leaving a nice baseball sized and stitch imprinted welt behind. Beltran was later overheard begging Willie to bring Tom Glavine back for spring training BP. Beltran's knees are still sore after off-season surgery and will most likely sit out the Mets first intrasquad game ...

Wikipedia: "A lancer (uhlan) was a cavalry soldier who fought with a lance:" Ok, so what's a lance? "A lance in the original sense is a light throwing spear, or javelin." Great. Im still wondering why they aren't just called the Manatees, but whatever. The Bucs won their annual spring scrimmage with the Lancers, 5-0, with Cuban defector ...

MLB Previews: NL East
Published 3/27/2008 by Kevin Hayward at All on the Field sports blog
When Jimmy Rollins called the Phillies the favorites to win the NL East last season, the average fan would have thought he was just running his mouth. The Braves had owned the division from its inception in 1995, and the Mets were coming off a 97-win season. But last year was a different story: New York caved and Philadelphia surged, and Rollins' words proved correct. This year, Carlos Beltran beat him to the punch and called the Phillies the favorites, attempting to take a little pressure off of New York. I, for one, am not buying it. ...

Will City of Brotherly Love Finally Toast a Champion? Last season was a strange, strange journey for the Phillies. After star shortstop (and future MVP) Jimmy Rollins predicted a division title in the offseason, the Phillies stumbled out of the gate, culminating in manager Charlie Manuel going senile and challenging reporters to a fight. But months later, the Phillies made good on Rollins’ guarantee, capitalizing on the Mets’ historic choke and winning the National League East. Unfortunately for the Fightin’ Phils, their good fortune quickly ended at the hands of the red-hot Colorado Rockies. Now in 2008, the Phillies must make good on yet another ...

Perhaps the only thing more embarrassing for a veteran Major League starting pitcher than giving up a home run to Jason Kendall would be getting demoted to the bullpen. Here are three such pitchers who might be facing this utter and soul-sucking humiliation: Kyle Kendrick: No, the Phillies don't exactly have a bunch of available arms to fill his spot, but that didn't stop Uncle Cholly from pushing Kendrick's next start up a bit in favor of the shockingly decent Adam Eaton. Kendrick has allowed 12 hits and 8 walks in just 7 and 1/3 innings pitched across two starts. He's not really pitching this ...
