UCLA Wins the Pac-10 with Some Help from the Zebras
FanHouse —
Filed under: UCLA Basketball, Pac-10 Basketball, Stanford Basketball It seems like UCLA can't win a game without being down by double-digits at the half, and Thursday's Pac-10-clinching overtime victory over Stanford was yet another example of that. The Cardinal held a 12-point lead at the break, but UCLA stormed back to win 77-67 in OT. Yet, while the Bruins certainly deserve a ton of credit for coming back, it bears mentioning that they had a good deal of help from the referees late. First things first, though, let's take stock of what UCLA ...
Refs Made Right Call in UCLA/Stanford Game
FanHouse —
Filed under: UCLA Basketball, Pac-10 Basketball, Stanford Basketball There seems to be an awful lot of bellyaching coming from Stanford after this foul call in the closing minutes of UCLA's win over Stanford. But you know what, the referees made the right call. He really, really did. The referees made the right call for those of us who love free basketball. That's the only reason he made that call, right? Because he wanted to extend the game. That official did us college basketball fans a huge favor by extending the game by an extra five ...
One call gives UCLA a win and me nightmares of Trent Johnson
The Dagger —
I hate to be the voice of dissent, but I've yet to encounter anyone (other than
the official who made the call, and UCLA fans, of course), who believes what
happened above was actually a foul. It actually made Fran Fraschilla ill.
I usually agree with Frannie, but here, I've gotta tell ya, I'm fine with the whistle.
If you want to argue that the referee should swallow his whistle and only call a
foul at that point if a player is actually hospitalized, okay. I can
live with that.
But by the actual textbook definition ...
In What Universe Is This A Foul? [Ranting Uncontrollably For No Apparent Reason]
Deadspin —
I am a firm believer that a basketball game cannot be lost on a single bad call. No, it takes many bad calls, as was proven Thursday in UCLA's 77-67 overtime win over Stanford at Pauley. Particularly galling to Cardinal fans was this apparent block by Lawrence Hill on the Bruins' Nick Collison with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation. Stanford was up by two at the time, and if the ref does the right thing, the game is over.
A foul, Mr. Official? Seriously? This call is the 2000 Florida election results of college basketball.
Collison, the conference's leading ...
Contrary to Popular Belief, Coillison Was Fouled
The Sporting Blog —
By Mike DeCourcy DeCourcy is a NCAA hoops columnist for Sporting News who occasionally graces us with his presence in this space. On what amounted to the final play of regulation during Thursday nights decisive Pac-10 showdown because UCLA and Stanford, Bruins guard Darren Collison raced the ball upcourt trying to match a basket by Stanford forward Lawrence Hill that put the Cardinal ahead with a little more than 7 seconds remaining. When Collison approached the foul lane, he elevated to shoot but was met by Hill and the ball was swatted to the floor. Amid the din of screaming Bruins fans, a whistle blew. Officials called a foul on Hill. ...
Last Night's Pac-10 Basketball Round-Up
Your Face is a Sports Blog —
- UCLA beat Stanford in overtime 77-67 to win the regular season conference title. Of course, there wouldn't have been an overtime if Darren Collison hadn't have been...touched?...lightly grazed?... by Stanford's Lawrence Hill while driving to the basket down by two at the end of regulation: Which, yeah, it's a terrible call ...
Reason for Stanford Fans To Scream
Sports Blog - football, basketball, and baseball —
It’s hard to say a game truly boils down to one moment, and that one call can really swing the difference between victory and defeat, but. . . well, it did last night. As you’ll see here, with 2.5 seconds left on the clock, Collison’s shot is cleanly blocked, and somehow this is a foul. No body. No arm. No nothing. Just ball. Foul.
UCLA: A Team of Destiny?
The Sports Lounge —
There’s no doubting that the UCLA Bruins are one of the most talented teams in the nation. Armed with super freshman Kevin Love, and one of the nation’s most improved players in Russell Westbrook, the Bruins have added a slasher and a reliable post presence to their already talented nucleus of Darren Collison, Josh Shipp, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, among others. Ben Howland’s club is aiming for the their third straight trip to the Final Four when the Tournament begins on March 20th, and with the Florida Gators finally out of the way, the Bruins no longer have their kryptonite standing in front of them. Never before has ...
Move Over, Duke - UCLA The New Foul Favorite?
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
Duke bashers, don’t worry about the Blue Devils’ exit from the tourney. If you’re looking for a new foul-favored villain to root against, try UCLA. The Bruins already had some questionable last-second wins over Stanford ...
The Refs Seem To Like This UCLA Team
The Smittblog —
A&M;'s Donald Sloan walked away with lacerated wrists, a bruised elbow and herpes. What he didn't get was two free shots. Overlooked in a day filled with great games and big upsets was UCLA pulling out a weak win over Texas A&M; in the final seconds and the suspect non-call shown above. That really couldn't be a more blatant missed call (but makes a little more sense when you realize that the crew was led by Big East veteran Tim Higgins) and it falls in line with the other gifts UCLA has been handed this year. And while the stakes were pretty high before, from here on out a non-call or ...
