The Seattle Mariners, ranked second-to-last in the American League in runs scored, batting average and slugging percentage (and dead last in OBP), decided to shake things up yesterday, firing hitting coach Jeff Pentland. Who cares, you say? Normally, not many folks outside the Pacific Northwest, but today you should care, because they brought 71-year-old Lee Elia in to replace him. Sometimes, I worry about head coaches. No, not necessarily NFL coaches, but just in general. Two weeks ago, while announcing a Division III college football game, during a critical two-point conversion try with the score 30-20, I witnessed the trailing home team trotting out the wildcat formation.
