Think He'll Make It Through The Night?
Rumors and Rants —
It's the AFC Championship game. My beloved San Diego Chargers are playing the hateful New England Patriots only this time they're winning. In fact, they're kneeling on the ball to run the clock out as the Patriots are out of times out. But wait. What's this? The Chargers fumbled the exchange on the kneel-down and the Patriots recovered the ball in the end zone to win! Tragedy! Pain! Suffering! That's about as close as I could come to an American parallel for what happened in the Chelsea/Liverpool semifinal of the UEFA Champions' Cup. Up 1-0 in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Liverpool needed only to kill another ...

Unprofessional Foul —
You know the funniest part of this video? It's not that Riise scores an own goal—that might not be funny at all if you are a Liverpool fan (although I'm not sure if we have any around here)—it's that within about 4 hours of the end of the match, this video (or some incarnation of it) had already been posted to youtube 35 times, and probably counting. The second best part of the video? It was such a spectacular failure that ESPN even teased it on SportsCenter. It's Funny Because It's True
deuceofdavenport.com 4/24/2008 — John Arne Riise might notice a new line on his next payslip . A handsome bonus from Chelsea Football Club. Riise gifted Chelsea a last-minute own-goal in Tuesday's Champions League semifinal match. He may have turned the tide in Chelsea's favor for next week's second leg at Stamford Bridge. Witness the glory that is Norway. As comical as Riise may have been, former Liverpool player/coach ...

The Offside

Seems own goal fever is taking Europe by storm (a bit like the measles in that respect.) Just 48 hours after John Arne Riise’s “what’s he doing? why doesn’t he just use his right foot?” 95th minute diving header Champions League own goal on Tuesday, Brazilian defender Lucio suffered a similar bewildering fate in Bayern ...
