Michel Therrien's Rant
Sean Leahy's Going Five Hole — January 10, 2006. The rant that began the psychological and on-ice change in style for the post-lockout Pittsburgh Penguins.

Game Over
hlog {Hockey's Ladies of Greatness} — It always amazes me how high hockey can lift you up. And then how far it can drop you down. A few random thoughts of the last 72 hours... Game 5 If you were under a rock Monday night and missed: the Pens blowing a two goal lead the Wings coming back to make it 3-2 Max Talbot's goal to tie it with thirty seconds left 3 grueling periods of OT which all ended with Petr Sykora scoring a goal he called earlier in the evening You missed quite a show. Pens had nothing to lose that game and everything in the world to gain. It was the most emotional ...

Those Other Teams Pt. 3: Pittsburgh
In Lou We Trust — Rounding out our non-Rangers division teams that aren’t the New Jersey Devils are the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins are interesting in the phenomenon of “other teams.” If you’ve only paid attention to hockey since 2006 or so, and there’s nothing wrong with that, you’d think the Penguins are a bunch of smug skaters. What with their Sidney Crosbys and their Evgeni Malkins and their formerly banana-pad clad Marc-Andre Fleurys and their Sergei Gonchars and their terrible car commercials and their enthusiastic fan base. They think they are so ...

Black Gold...Texas T...Pens and Oilers Preview
HockeyBuzz.com: Brian Metzer — The Penguins finally get back to action this evening as the Edmonton Oilers flow into Pittsburgh for the only meeting between the two teams on the season. The Oilers are an up and coming team in the NHL and have followed the Penguins template of building through youth. Ales Hemsky, Sam Gagner, Robert Nilsson and Andrew Cogliano are just a couple of the young guns that are trying to bring the Oil back to the glory years of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. Add to that the off season acquisitions of Eric Cole and Lubomir Visnovsky and you have a pretty impressive core. The Oilers play and up tempo, hard working style of hockey and will be a big test for ...

By admin | November 8, 2008 NFL Head Coaches breaking down at press conferences and the Coors Light commercials are always on TV these days so I find that it’s a good time to look at one of the best tirade’s in Pittsburgh Penguin history. The Dark Ages
The Pensblog - A Pittsburgh Penguins Blog From Behind The Veil Of Cryptic Online Identities — We're not so far removed from being the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL. Actually, three years ago, we would have killed to have Tampa's potential. But at the time we post this, the Lightning's record indicates they are the worst team in National Hockey League. It was a long road from the 2001 Eastern Conference Finals to the Pens ...

Has Therrien Overstayed His Welcome?
Faceoff Factor — Has Therrien Overstayed His Welcome? Matt Bodenschatz | Pittsburgh Penguins Jan 8, 11:25 AM | Hype this story! Many will say that Michel Therrien was unwelcome from the start. His famous tirade claiming his defensemen had the goal of being the worst defensive group in the NHL certainly didn’t make him the most popular person in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ locker room. But with time (and not much of it), his sandpaper personality was enough to shape a group of inexperienced players into a playoff team. By his second full season as head coach, Therrien led his team to within two victories of a Stanley Cup championship. Oh, and ...

Not exactly a statement game
The Daily Hab-it — Though it was no fault of the Montreal Canadiens, it's tough to really judge anything about the way they played Tuesday night because the Pittsburgh Penguins were just so awful in losing 4-2. No other team in the NHL would give up their own zone as easily as the Penguins did. No other team would consistently lose battle after battle for the puck the way the Penguins did. No other team would sleepwalk their way through the first 40 or even 50 minutes of the game the way the Penguins did. So really, how are we supposed to judge the reunification of last year's top line? How can we judge if Roman Hamrlik's plus-4 on the night to go with his goal and assist is a ...

PENS FIRE MICHEL THERRIEN
Mondesi's House — The Penguins have just parted ways with Head Coach Michel Therrien, who's been at the helm since replacing the Great Ed Olczyk Experiment in 2005-06. The interim coach will be Dan Bylsma, 38, who was most recently the head coach of the Pens' American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Assistant ...

Therrien Out - But Will It Help?
hlog {Hockey's Ladies of Greatness} — The text message last night looked something like this: "PENS ALERT: WB/S coach Dan Blysma named interim Head Coach replacing Michel Therrien." And as quick as that, we say goodbye to a coach that has been with the Penguins for three seasons. Was the firing deserved? It's an interesting question. On one hand, there are plenty of Pens fans that have been calling for Therrien to get the ax ever since the Pens troubles started in December. But listening to the radio this morning, there are plenty of people defending him, stating that firing him will in no way help the Pens current ...

The Departed - Michel Therrien - 2-17-09
Empty Netters — All sports chew through their coaches like wafer cookies. None more so than hockey. Of the top five leaders in all-time coaching wins in the NHL, four spent time with three or more teams. Scotty Bowman, arguably the best coach in all of sports, drew paychecks from five different teams as a coach. Dick Irvin, Sr. was with three teams. Mike Keenan, admittedly through much of his own doing, has led eight teams. Four teams have known Pat Quinn as their coach. Out of the top five, only Al Arbour, who had a cup of coffee with the Blues as a coach, managed to stick with the Islanders in two long stretches. The Penguins are no different ...

Around the League
Top Shelf — -- I paid about as much attention to the Carolina game as the Sabres did - i.e. not very much - so I don't really have much to say about it. (I know. Bad blogger!) I will say that despite the disappointment that they didn't drop the hammer on the Hurricanes when they had the chance, I'm still not overly concerned with the Sabres missing the playoffs. The Eastern Conference is just too weak for them to miss out without completely falling apart. I am slightly concerned about how they'll play once they make the playoffs but I figure that's a post for another day. ...

Pens Need Called Out - Therrien-Style!!
The Steel City Sports Fan (Penguins Edition) — TSCSF reader, akus, brought up a really good point yesterday saying that Therrien's infamous "Soff" press conference could easily be applied to the Pens current situation, so in honor of Therrien's "untimely departure" from the Penguins organization, I'm posting it here today! ...

Kovalchoo...whah he did...
The Pensblog - A Pittsburgh Penguins Blog From Behind The Veil Of Cryptic Online Identities — We don't harbor a grudge against Ilya Kovalchuk anymore  for pointing at Sid back in his rookie year. 2:45. A Stanley Cup kind of makes you forgive and forget.  Not to mention that without Kovalchoo, we wouldn't have this. Plus, Ilya Kovalchuk is a beast. And now we actually feel bad for him.  That Dmitry dude over at PUCK DADDY who speaks European languages asked Kovalchoo who he considers a legend. His answer: Aleksey Morozov. ...

freep.com 5/23/2008 — Detroit Red Wings fan if you are playing this game. Ok, so we know it’s not the Stanley Cup finals. And these penguins aren’t the real Pittsburgh Penguins. The Fix Is In
everyfacetofthegame.blogspot.com 5/23/2008 — Facing the paradox of Gary Bettman being either an bumbling idiot that couldn't successfully set up a game of Mouse Trap, or the evil mastermind hell bent on having the Pittsburgh Penguins' names etched onto Lord Stanley, Every Facet of the Game comes to the logical conclusion, the fix is in.
