When people play like crap, they should get called on it.  It's that simple. I can understand the desire to defend your players, but come on.

The guy wants to rant & rave, but the 'you don't have a kid' shot's about as low as it goes...thank you, Mr. High & Mighty.  Enjoying the view from your pedastal?

Did u read the article Redsauce?  It was ridiculous in terms of personally attacking a player.  I dont mean saying something like he's playing bad but calling him a mamas boy.  A chicken who doesnt have the guts to play QB.  The kid is already benched and you are going to kick him when he is down is simply stupid.

If you read a little more into the lines of the column, Jenni basically says that Reid is just a baby and attacks his manhood.  You should really read the article before opening up your mouth.

Why there was an uproar about it?  He's a kid.  Have you ever played college sports and had such pressure on you?  This kid was kicked when he was down and who knows how his psyche is right now.  Reid is NOT a pro athlete.  He doesnt need to be ridiculed and ripped so personally.  When you feel like you have a towns, or even better yet whole states counting on you and you have a bad game, how would you feel when such pressure is on you?

I actually did play college sports (although I'll admit at not such a crazy high level).  Read further down--to pretend Reid isn't adequately compensated for his services is ridiculous.  It's not the sportswriters' job to care about his psyche--it's to call him out when he's playing like crap.

Where's the uproar when ARod's mental acumen gets called into play?  Is there a salary line that if you make over that amount, anyone can say anything about you?  I'm just loving the double-standard.  Say he's a pro & all that nonsense, but Reid's getting his just like ARod is.

But thats the point, Reid isnt a pro athlete.  There SHOULD be a line drawn when it comes down to personal life.  I agree that if he plays bad, then the media has every right to call for him to be benched or call for the backup. But to attack a persons manhood and call him a baby with such a personal attack is completely uncalled for.

My last say on the matter:

Why's it OK to "attack a persons manhood and call him a baby" when it's his job as opposed to his hobby which he just happens to get handsomely compensated for?

How do you know he's being compensated for it? :P  I just think there should be a limit as to what is said about college athletes.  Most of them (not all because you know some of them are paid. lol) arent compensated and are more students then athletes hence why i say there should be a line drawn.  If its a pro athlete and its there job, by all means they chose to be in the public eye as such and should be critized when playing bad.

    Article in question: newsok.com/article/3131543

She does say a lot of insulting off the field things about the QB, and says that the coaching staffs mind was basically made up that he wouldn't start because of his attitude. She does mention, several times, that he was hand-fed chicken by his mother, and that says everything about his attitude.

So, I do believe Mike Gundy was somewhat in the right. But, the QB should NOT have to have chicken hand fed to him, and Mike Gundy should really not read some of the other stuff that comes out of the Craplahomans columnists.

She mentions the chicken thing three times in the entire article.  What does she say that's so bad?  She basically writes that he doesn't have the attitude to cut it right now as the starting quarterback.  She questions his drive.

Seriously, if this is the first time Mike Gundy's had one of his players' attitudes questions, then he's been coaching soccer for 4 year olds.  Give me a break.

Granted, the thing about him being fed chicken seemed cheap - I'm assuming his mom just brought him some and didn't hand feed it to him - but aren't coaches supposed to hold players accountable? Maybe there's a reason Ok. St. is an underachieving team.

Getting personal with the "this person has never had a child" bit might come back to bite him, but Gundy was completely justified in going after Jenni Carlson.  Devoting an entire column to blasting a student athlete is a dubious move.  Throw in the fact that it was all based on rumors and off-field stuff and she deserves the criticism.

Because sportswriters have never written a column about how they think a certain athlete stinks, this is a totally never-before-heard-of situation.

And isn't this what sportswriters are supposed to do?  Write their opinions on sports?  Report  why a guy gets benched?

If college athletes don't want to be criticized, they shouldn't play. It's a huge business with enormous exposure. Don't like it? They should take up water polo. Nobody will say a word.

It is a huge business, but aside from the exposure, college athletes don't see a dime for their services. Questioning a student-athlete's tangibles (their on-field performance ans skill) is completely fair game; questioning their mental fortitude is somegthing else completely. It's important to use personal discretion in that regard, and it appears that Jenni Carlson did not.

Having said that, the clip is awesome.

It's laughable to think that college athletes don't see any money for their services.  Want to pretend that these athletes are actually 'student-athletes'?  I highly recommend taking Jim Harrick Jr.'s test to see how much of the 'student' part of that shows through.

Keep in mind I'm not saying that every 'student-athlete' is solely an athlete.  I'm saying the vast majority are.  Pretending that college sports isn't big business & that these athletes aren't compensated is ridiculous.

Your article/test link simply shows that it is more about the business versus the student (which was wrong as the NCAA found) which in essence supports everyone blogging here that Jenni Carlson was wrong for her article.

Not that something like this hasn't been written before on another athlete, nor do we know that a coach called the reporter on it.  The beauty of it is that everyone who even just watches the video, will side with Gundy because he is right.  They're kids.

Forgot to mention this.  Sorry about the personal attack Red.  Unfortunately ive been on the end of some of those attacks in a paper and so has some of my friends and let me tell you it sucks.  I do believe coach Gundy had every right to protect his players and if i was a parent and read that column, i would be pretty upset also.  To attack such a person in such a negative way when he is already down and and benched is completely uncalled for.

On a side note, i am glad that coach Gundy spoke from the heart and shot this one from the hip.  It made it that much more real.

White Sox Conduct Infuriates Blow-Up Dolls

The White Sox have been all over the news lately, and it's not because their offense has been so bad it would make the Padres blush. Yesterday, the focus was on Ozzie Guillen's pre-game tribute to the stylings of Lee Elia, in which he bemoaned the fickleness of Chicago fans and the popularity of the Cubs. Unfortunately, no media outlet has the [expletive] [expletive] to release an unedited [expletive] version of this [expletive] masterpiece, so this is the best I can do. But the rant is so yesterday's news now. Today, the focus is on what was in the Sox clubhouse before Sunday's game -- two ...

Freshman Quarterback Review, Part Two: Big 12
Published 6/4/2008 by SMQ at Sunday Morning Quarterback: Front Page Posts
One of the regular assumptions here and elsewhere holds that, whatever a player's performance as a freshman, automatically add major gains to his sophomore projections. He had no idea what he was doing; now he does. Hence: he will be better. He'll probably be awesome, in fact, since who's good enough to start despite having no idea what he's doing? ...

Context, Please

Jenni Carlson is back at it. No, not angering Mike Gundy to the point of hilarity (and a contract extension). She is, however, making noise with claims of sexism without proper context. The last time this happened -- at least that I was paying attention -- was during the "infamous" incident regarding the Chicago White Sox and some blow-up dolls who made their way into the clubhouse. That's when Jenni opined that the presence of the blow-up dolls made it uncomfortable for any female reporter in the clubhouse who was just trying to do her job. Which is a fair enough sentiment -- had there actually been ...

Published 16 days ago by jason at SPORTSbyBROOKS
Boone Pickens‘ big donation to Oklahoma State University has turned into quite the money maker for the Cowboys , even if it hasn’t made any football or basketball champs yet. Oklahoma State Cowboys ball Darren Rovell of CNBC crunches the numbers of the oil man’s gift, in which he gave his alma mater $165 million to help his school further excel on the court & on the field. Although the moolah hasn’t brought any Big 12 titles yet, it has brought something just as important - even more dough. Rovell explains that one condition of Pickens’ original donation was that the money would be put back into Boone’s BP Capital investment firm. And it ...

That Nebraska fan who created the bogus webpage and story about Oklahoma quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Landry Jones being arrested on cocaine distribution charges? Jones' dad said he is considering prosecuting Conradt "to the fullest extent of the law." Now Oklahoman publisher David Thompson is considering legal ...
