You might have heard that next year the NBA is looking into fining players for flopping. There's still lots of questions about how effective the fines will be in curbing the flopping epidemic, but everyone appears to be in favor of the league trying to do something, especially Sheed.

Red: ‘They’re Teaching Them How To Fall! Unreal!’
Published 5/30/2008 by Brooks at SPORTSbyBROOKS
Stunning video find by AOL’s Tom Ziller at the blog BULLETS FOREVER : The circa-1970s instructional film features Red Auerbach going absolutely ballistic over the practice of flopping: “Now remember, coaches today, in high school, college and pro are teaching the players how to fall. This is unreal! … This segment is not aimed at referees, believe me. It’s aimed at coaches, it’s aimed at players. What are we going to do about it? Let’s clean this thing up. Let’s not hurt the game.” Auerbach also brings in cigarette-voiced (and longtime NBA official) Mendy Rudolph to give his opinion on the practice of ...

Red knew what was up back in the 70s
Published 5/30/2008 by houroc at SportFiends
Ok so yesterday it was announced that the NBA would be cracking down on all of the flopping. Manu Ginobili is irate.
I mentioned that this was not a new issue for the NBA but this issue goes back even further than I thought.
Back in the day, former Celtics All time great coach Red Auerbach knew what was up back in 1971, the NBA is just figuring it out now.
Thanks to Bullets Forever for this one.

One day after The Sternbot™ announces the league is going to crack down on floppers, Bullets Forever (via Ballhype) turns up this incredible 1970's clip that shows Celtics legend Red Auerbach and Mendy Rudolph (the former Dean of NBA officials) chastising anyone and everyone associated with the flop. Can someone over in the SA-Express News sports department please ask Manu if he had a poster of Mike Riordan up on his bedroom wall? Harvey? Monroe? I need to know. Thanks.

Red Auerbach in one word: Awesome
Published 5/30/2008 by Basketbawful (noreply@blogger.com) at Basketbawful
Bless Red Auerbach and his curmudgeonly soul. He was an early advocate of the fast break. He invented the concept of the sixth man. He fined his players for eating pancakes after midnight -- five bucks, payable directly to him -- and he wouldn't let them drink water during practice (he thought it weighed them down). And, for the record, that mixture of innovation and folk wisdom led to eight straight championships, and nine in 10 years. Not too shabby. ...

The More You Know: Mike Riordan's flopping skills leave something to be desired. A little more show on that flop, Mike.
Also, and excuse my ignorance of 1970's basketball, but why is Red Auerbach shooting this video with the Washington Bullets? Isn't that kind of like Phil Jackson making a video using this year's Boston Celtics?
