Video: Can't a man kneel without being mocked by a sophomore in a Gopher suit?
Dr. Saturday —
Goldy Gopher has come a long way from his/her conservative upbringing on the prairie to national fame as the cartoonishly oversized, anthropomorphic face of the Big Ten's second-largest major metropolitan university, and naturally he/she's shed many of the traditions of the "small-burrow" lifestyle along the way. (I mean, this is Minneapolis/St. Paul.) But what would Goldy's parents think if they saw their child actually mocking Penn State's Jerome Hayes as he knelt to pray before the Nittany Lions' kickoff with Minnesota last Saturday? ...

Naughty Goldy Gopher Mocks Penn State, Jesus
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
Did University of Minnesota mascot Goldy Gopher go too far when he mimicked Penn State defensive end Jerome Hayes praying in the end zone on Saturday? The guy who shot this video (seen following the jump) clearly thinks so.
“He clearly mocked his prayer. That’s not cool,” says the camera operator, who is obviously a Penn State fan annoyed with the gopher’s antics. Will Goldy have to answer to a higher authority for this?

NO LOVE FOR GOLDY
Nittany Lines —
Before every game , defensive end Jerome Hayes kneels in Beaver Stadium's North end zone and says a prayer. Last Saturday, he has company. Goldy, the Minnesota mascot , knelt in front of Hayes (mocking him, apparently) and then tried to initiate some contact. Hayes walked away. "When I got up , I couldn't hear what he said, and he tried to shake my hand," Hayes said today. "I wasn't trying to have any part of that." Hayes said he has seen video of the moment, and that it doesn't bother him. Though some teammates have said, "the Gopher got the best of me." Did Goldy? You be the judge.

Wild thought. Here’s a question for discussion. The Dolphins this season have taken to using a very interesting personnel package for their wildcat looks: two tight-ends and four runningbacks (Ronnie Brown at the “wildcat QB” spot, Ricky Williams as a split receiver/motion back, and then a fullback next to Brown and the other flanker has been a runningback as well). My friend Jerry Gordon speculated that this might be particularly taxing on NFL teams because of the strict 53 man roster limits. Indeed, the Dolphins had a lot of success against the Jets, and Rex Ryan uses a number of six, seven, and occasionally more ...

The Daily Gopher —
Only three links for today, but these three are worth rigorous debate:
I fail to see the logic that losing the Vikings to California wold be good for Gopher football. Tickets may become more scarce, but the State as a whole would suffer. Apparently, a commenter at this site disagrees:
Minnesota legislators I've heard ,seem to be saying "talk to us after the recession". California's problems are worse than ours, so it's hard to imagine government help to build a stadium in LA. Maybe they can do it without public money like New York did for the Yankees. If the Vikings leave, I'm happy to turn my football attention to ...

If you're reading this for Gopher news or listen to the radio, you are probably already aware of the controversey surrounding Goldy Gopher's actions on Saturday against Penn State. See below:
Now, the U has already rolled over and issued an apology, which is unfortunate for several reasons, which I will enumerate for you now:
This is the only remotely funny, entertaining, or worthwhile thing Goldy has ever done. They actually had former Goldys call in to KFAN today to discuss this "controversey", and one of them actually used the phrase, "When I was on the ...
GOLDY THE GOPHER’S MASTERS APOLOGIZE FOR HIS BLASPHEMY
EDSBS —
Goldy has now been apologized for this through the university spokesperson, Dan Wolter, who apologizes for any offense taken at Goldy’s mimicry of Jerome Hayes’ prayer.
Minnesota spokesman Dan Wolter says the stunt was “plainly a mistake” and the mascot didn’t intend to offend anyone or trivialize religion.
We’re all lucky this was the Golden Gopher and not the Stanford Tree. Then things really might have gotten blasphemous. Personally we don’t think there’s enough religion in football, which is why we drop at least thirty ...

Here’s video of the Minnesota Gopher openly mocking Penn State linebacker Jerome Hayes. I mean, he’s either mocking Hayes or saying some sort of counter-prayer to combat Hayes’ prayer. Or he was just talking trash to a guy that was trying to prepare himself for a game. Either way, I disapprove, and I hope he receives a strongly-worded letter from the Mascots’ Alliance. And oh by the way, God LOVES the BCS and hates the Pac-10. He told me so. via Everywhere. ...

In a story that nobody gives two shits about, Goldy Gopher, the mascot for the University of Minnesota, has apologized for mocking Penn State defensive end Jerome Hayes as he prayed before last Saturday's game. Welcome to Friday’s Morning Mashup, where we’ll get you caught up on what’s going on in the sports world and beyond.
Isiah Thomas, showing the grace, maturity and professionalism that allowed him to be so successful as coach of the New York Knicks (that’s sarcasm, in case you don’t recognize it), ripped Magic Johnson yesterday. Thomas did his best to drive a wedge between Magic and Larry Bird, who co-wrote a forthcoming book with Jackie MacMullan. In the book, Magic criticizes Isiah. There are a couple of new allegations — such as Isiah questioning Magic’s sexuality after the Lakers star contracted the HIV virus — ...
Minnesota Golden Gopher Mocks Penn State’s Jerome Hayes
Obsessed With Sports —
The Golden Gopher does NOT respect your pregame rituals. Nope, not even when he is in your house in Happy Valley. Screw your prayers–not happening in the Gophers endzone.
Rude? Maybe. I have the Gopher’s back. I like the shittalk. He’s got my right-in vote for Capital One Mascot of the Year. Unfortunately for Minnesota, a spade is a spade and the Nitty Lions stomped the Gophers 20-0. Karma–what up?! We have the video after the jump…
It doesn’t get much better for the Gophers as they travel to OSU this weekend.

I don’t think I could ever be a mascot, because it requires a naturally caffeinated individual: someone who oozes enthusiasm and high spirits for hours on end. I feel asleep at a Bulls game last year. Sober. (To my defense, I was way up in the 300 level, and without glasses. Also, I’m very skilled at falling asleep in odd places.)
Anyway, another key trait of the mascot is to playfully mock the opposition. But one thing you don’t want to do is offend the other team. Especially when it comes to religion. This is America, after all. We sue someone when they look at us funny. Religion, though? That’s just a whole other level.
But ...
