Shamrock OUT! EliteXC in search of replacement? EliteXC’s scheduled main event tonight between Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice has been canceled due to an injury suffered by Ken Shamrock. No announcements have been made regarding a potential replacement for Shamrock or replacement fight to take the main event spot. However it appears some moves may be taking place in the undercard to fill the void created by the injured fighter. More to come

Seth Petruzelli beats Kimbo Slice via TKO, Gina Carano victorious
Five Ounces of Pain —
Seth Petruzelli beats Kimbo Slice via TKO, Gina Carano victorious In what ended up being a strange night at the EliteXC “Heat” card, former UFC fighter and TUF 2 veteran Seth Petruzelli stepped in to fight Kimbo Slice in the main event after Ken Shamrock pulled out due to a cut sustained over his left eye in training. Kimbo’s camp allegedly didn’t make a decision on whether or not take the fight with Petruzelli until about 6:20 ET according to the broadcast. Petruzelli shocked the world, however, by beating Slice within seconds of the opening bell. He stunned Kimbo with a short right jab that put Kimbo on all fours and never looked back, ...
EliteXC “Heat” Thoughts & Commentary
Five Ounces of Pain —
EliteXC “Heat” Thoughts & Commentary [image] EliteXC’s latest installment of CBS Saturday Night Fights , EliteXC “Heat,” has now come and gone and it’s time for us to hash through what we saw this evening. For the most part I thought the show was very entertaining. It contained striking battles, knockouts, some grappling, a submission, and one hell of a surprise. Let’s break it down, shall we? What was Ken Shamrock doing sparring? I mean, seriously. Is this for real? Hours before the fight you’re going to do heavy sparring and get cut? Bush league, Shamrock. Freaking bush league. Seth Petruzelli shocked some, not all And I say this because ...
Petruzelli’s improbable victory raises many unanswered questions
Five Ounces of Pain —
Petruzelli’s improbable victory raises many unanswered questions Sunrise, Fla. — You could say it’s never happened in MMA but it did earlier this decade just prior to a UFC pay-per-view event in Atlantic City when Kevin Randleman tripped on a pipe just moments before having been scheduled to fight. Yet Ken Shamrock’s removal from a headline fight just hours before show time is still somewhat unprecedented considering the exposure involved with televising an event on primetime network television. What happened to EliteXC and CBS on Saturday afternoon was the equivalent to playing black jack at a casino and being dealt a 16 and then opting to ...

The upside for Kimbo taking a fight vs. Petruzelli was likely financial
Five Ounces of Pain —
The upside for Kimbo taking a fight vs. Petruzelli was likely financial Sunrise, Fla. — The second-guessing regarding last night’s decision to substitute Seth Petruzelli in place of a medically disqualified Ken Shamrock in the main event of EliteXC and CBS’ “Saturday Night Fights” has already begun. The main question being raised is why did Kimbo accept the fight considering there was little upside? Well, I believe there was an upside for Team Kimbo and it was likely financial. While speaking with sources at the post-fight press conference for the event, they indicated to FiveOuncesOfPain.com that Slice received a “substantial” increase over the ...

EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw comments on reaction towards referee after Slice vs. Petruzelli fight; his feelings about Shamrock’s cut; and more in new interview Immediately following the post-fight press conference for EliteXC and CBS’ Saturday Night Fights this past weekend in Sunrise, Florida, I was able to catch up with EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw to discuss a number of pressing topics coming out of the fight card. During the course of the interview, Shaw addressed his reaction towards referee Tony Wragge following the stoppage of the Kimbo Slice vs. Seth Petruzelli main event; the process in which a replacement was chosen ...

Gina Carano and Cyborg Santos doing damage at EliteXC Heat (pics) Below are pictures from EliteXC Heat that took place this past Saturday at BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Gina Carano and Cristiane“Cyborg” Santos each displayed power, finesse, submission technique, and overall put on a hell of an entertaining bout against their respective opponents. With each of these top female fighters winning at EliteXC Heat by Unanimous Decision, a future match-up between Carano and Santos is inevitable. Once again, the ladies stole the show, as displayed in detail by the images below… Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold [image] Cris Santos ...

Five Ounces of Pain —
CBS exec says idea of a fourth MMA broadcast was in the plans all along CBS Senior Executive Vice President for Primetime Kelly Kahl confirmed to FiveOuncesOfPain.com that this past weekend’s telecast of Saturday Night Fights pulled in an average of 4.31 million viewers. The numbers were up significantly from July’s broadcast which averaged 2.6 million viewers and close to the network’s debut MMA telecast in May, which attracted an averaged of 4.85 million viewers.“Going in we were going to be closer to the May numbers than the July numbers and we certainly did that,” Kahl commented when contacted by Five Ounces of Pain. “The 4.31 ...
Bas Rutten believes Kimbo’s decison to fight Petruzelli was the right one
Five Ounces of Pain —
Bas Rutten believes Kimbo’s decison to fight Petruzelli was the right one If you were expecting Bas Rutten , one of Kimbo Slice’s trainers, to throw him under the bus following his first-ever career professional loss this past Saturday, you’re sadly mistaken. Rutten, a former UFC heavyweight champion who has prepared for all three of Slice’s professional fights and his exhibition debut, still believes the decision to face ex-UFC light heavyweight Seth Petruzelli during EliteXC and CBS’ Saturday Night Fights this past weekend was the right call to make.“I think it was the right decision because people were there to see him right,” said Rutten ...

Petruzelli disputes reports he insinuated he received a bonus for keeping Slice fight a standup affair
Five Ounces of Pain —
Petruzelli disputes reports he insinuated he received a bonus for keeping Slice fight a standup affair Seth Petruzelli created quite a stir following his improbable 14-second TKO against Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson during this past weekend’s Saturday Night Fights on CBS. He also added to the controversy following an interview during an interview on 104.1 FM in Orlando with the Monsters morning show. When asked by one of the show’s hosts whether he was concerned by Slice’s standup skills and wanted to focus on getting the fight to the ground, Petruzelli indicated that he wanted to keep it standing. However, he also phrased his answer in a way ...
KIMBO LOST! EliteXC is done and other random musings.
Five Ounces of Pain —
KIMBO LOST! EliteXC is done and other random musings. I awoke Sunday morning to find that a large number of MMA “fans” and journalists had a big plate of stupid for breakfast and ran to their keyboards to share. Many of them predicting the immediate demise of ProElite/EliteXC due to a :14 second loss by the company’s poster boy Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson . Regardless of how you feel about Kimbo or EliteXC, you would have to either be blind or really uninformed to think this fight would spell the end of the company. EliteXC was on the brink of disaster well before Slice agreed to fight Seth Petruzelli , long before the CBS:”Saturday Night ...

State of Florida has no immediate plans to investigate EliteXC bribery accusations While many columnists and writers have called for an investigation in response to vague comments made Monday by Seth Petruzelli during a radio interview on 104.1 FM in Orlando that many feel suggests he claimed EliteXC officials offered him a bonus to keep the fight standing, the state of Florida has no immediate plans to do so.“The Department has not received any official complaints regarding the fight Saturday night,” Department of Business and Professional Regulation Press Secretary Alexis Antonacci revealed exclusively to FiveOuncesOfPain.com ...

Five Ounces of Pain —
Seth Petruzelli discusses EliteXC bonus money; Kimbo’s posse threatening his wife; what it was like fighting Bob Sapp; and more in new exclusive interview Seth Petruzelli’s last-minute promotion to the main event of EliteXC and CBS’ Saturday Night Fights this past weekend was not his opportunity at major exposure. In addition to fighting twice for the UFC , Petruzelli is also a veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality show on Spike TV. He also fought in a well-publicized fight in Japing in 2004 for K-1 against former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Bob “The Beast” Sapp . I initially felt that Petruzelli’s huge opportunities might be nothing ...

Kimbo Slice: Ultimate Fraud?
Five Ounces of Pain —
Kimbo Slice: Ultimate Fraud? [image] Now that the smoke has cleared, the dust has settled and the fallout from EliteXC “Heat” this past Saturday has almost subsided (with the exception of the Petruzelli “bribe” situation) I wanted to take a look back at the hate that has been spewed at one Kimbo Slice. Ever since Saturday night, numerous outlets have taken huge shots at Kimbo Slice , going so far as to call him “the ultimate fraud” to saying that he he simply “sucks” and that he has “no place in MMA.” All I have to say to that is chill, donkey. Chill. There are plenty of people out there, myself included, that knew that if Kimbo faced a ...

John McCarthy leaves The Fight Network and hints at possible return to officiating Long-time mixed martial arts referee John McCarthy announced Tuesday that he is leaving Canada-based combat sports cable channel The Fight Network. While McCarthy did not specify his exact reasons for leaving, he left indications that he was not satisfied with some of the actions of the channel’s upper management.“To all of the higher ups that have taken over the Fight Network over the last year I only have this to say………….. Shame on you………………,” McCarthy wrote in a farewell blog on the company’s website. McCarthy had worked with TFN on a part-time basis the past ...

K.J. Noons says he’s a free agent, EliteXC says otherwise [image] K.J. Noons was stripped of the EliteXC lightweight title almost a month ago after not coming to terms with EliteXC on a possible title defense against Nick Diaz . The promotion wanted to schedule Noons vs. Diaz for their October 4 EliteXC “Heat” show on CBS. Noons refused to defend the title against Nick Diaz and cited several reasons, including the fact that he felt Diaz wasn’t the number one contender for the title. Due to the promotion taking his title away, Noons now believes he’s a free agent. “I’m a free agent,” Noons told Sherdog. Noons was stripped of the title ...
The 9 Most Intriguing Fights left in 2008
Five Ounces of Pain —
The 9 Most Intriguing Fights left in 2008 I don’t know about the rest of you, but having our sport’s popularity in the mainstream hinge on a 34 year old street fighter is downright depressing. And the fact that I have gone from people asking if I do that “ultimate fighting” stuff to people asking how fast Kimbo Slice could knock out Mike Tyson is enough to make me want to vomit on my Tapout bed sheets. In an effort to cheer myself up I started to remind myself of all the awesome MMA in the coming months, with multiple fights having massive implications on the landscape of their respective divisions. The divisional rankings have the potential to be ...
TUF: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir Episode 4 Recap
Five Ounces of Pain —
TUF: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir Episode 4 Recap [image] This week’s episode starts off with all the fighters getting together to watch UFC 84 and Junie Browning and Shane Nelson get into a bottle of wine right off the bat. Junie and Shane pound the bottle of wine and then, to no one’s surprise, Junie starts talking smack to Team Nogueira, throwing peanuts at them and challenging all of them to a fight. Kyle Kingsbury throws peanuts back at Junie who doesn’t take kindly to it. He’s the kind of guy who can dish out the worst kind of punishment but when he gets any kind of resistance he crumbles. Kingsbury throws a whole bowl of peanuts ...
TUF 8 cast-member Phillipe Nover shares Week Four thoughts about Junie Allen Browning and drinking in the house
Five Ounces of Pain —
TUF 8 cast-member Phillipe Nover shares Week Four thoughts about Junie Allen Browning and drinking in the house After watching the episode a few times I was appalled to see how much focus was given to Junie’s and Nelson’s antics. I hope the people watching can separate that type of a so-called MMA fighter from the new age professionals that truly deserve to be on the show. The UFC and MMA in general have blown up to incredible proportions in the last 10-to-15 years. The only thing stopping MMA from getting main steam are the politicians and conservatives who believe MMA is “to barbaric and violent.” Junie and Nelson particularly brought evidence to ...

Five Ounces of Pain —
Adam Morgan’s Sprawl ‘N Brawl (MMA News Roundup) It’s been a busy week in MMA with the big story of the week being the “bribe” that Seth Petruzelli may or may not have received to keep the fight wiith Kimbo on the feet. But that wasn’t the only big story this week. Michael Wilbon , of ESPN’s PTI, thinks the Kimbo fight was fixed, Wagnney Fabiano has an opponent for December 3rd’s WEC show, Junie Browning is a moron, and lots more. Let’s break it all down, shall we? Michael Wilbon thinks the Kimbo Slice fight was fixed Seriously? Fixed? Petruzelli accepting money to keep the fight standing is at least believable. Rampage attempted to recruit Wanderlei’s former Chute Box coach? Former UFC light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Rampage Jackson may already be playing a Chess match in his mind for his upcoming fight against his arch-nemesis Wanderlei Silva at UFC 92 . Defending the clinch, knees and barrage of offense Silva can produce has always been a concern for Jackson in his two losses. Rampage may have also had in his mind the old saying “If you can’t beat em, join em”, when he unsuccessfully attempted to recruit Silva’s former Chute Box coach Raphael Cordeiro to prepare against Silva. Cordeiro told Tatame ...
