NNN: The Habs Are a Filthy Team
Pension Plan Puppets —
Here's video of the hit last night by Tom Kostopolous on Mike Van Ryn. A more proper term would be assault because at no point in that play does Kostopolous do anything else than try to injure Van Ryn. Now a guy that was making Fletcher look great for offloading McCabe and replacing him with a younger and more defensively sound version is out for at least a month. Here's is that scumsucker Kostopolous' empty excuse:
"I didn't anticipate he would turn (away, with his back to the hit), I couldn't stop ... I hope he's all right."
Sorry you asshat, the video proves that ...
Puck Headlines: Fallout from nasty, violent Habs/Leafs game
Puck Daddy —
Here are your Weekend Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media. • Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos received a major for boarding last night, on a hit that will put Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Van Ryn on the shelf for a month with multiple injuries. TSN reports that the NHL is going to look into the hit, and potential additional punishment. Take a look at the hit (video) and decide for yourself. Another nasty play by Andrei ...
Nothing Wrong With Kostopoulos Hit
Habs Eyes On The Prize —
I finally got around to watching the highlights from last night's debacle against the Maple Leafs. I wasn't too keen on seeing them after the game, the worst one the Canadiens have played in over a year. Last night, I missed the first ten minutes of the game after arriving home from my daughter's tournament (she was game MVP) and I watched the first half of the game with the sound down and some company in the room. I hadn't seen the Tom Kostopoulos hit on Leafs defenseman Mike Van Ryn, but I had heard a bit about it, and that he'd been thrown from the game. Late this afternoon I spoke with a Leafs ...
Mike Van Ryn Can't Win For Trying
Deuce of Davenport | Sports News, Commentary, Humor, Videos —
We're not gonna lie. It's been a shitty couple of weeks for the Maple Leafs' Mike Van Ryn. First he was helped through some glass on October 23rd. Relive the good times! Van Ryn was probably thinking it couldn't get much worse than that. Wrong. The Habs' Tom Kostopoulous was jealous of Milan Lucic and decided to see if he could put Van Ryn through the glass too. Fail. Bet he wishes the glass gave way that time although he would have taken it out with his face. This time, he stayed down and he'll be out for a month with "a concussion, a ...
What We Learned: Don’t blame me, I voted for Biron!
The Two-Line Pass —
Because I tend to not blog on the weekends, here is a feature that will run through the entire season. It aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact about each team that played. And hell, there’s a ton of other crap for me to blather on about too. And yes, I’m totally ripping off just about every other blogger ever’s weekly column, but that’s something you’ll have to deal with on your own time.
Danger: This post contains language that some people might not like. This will be the only thing on the site that regularly does so.
I understand that in the NHL there’s a certain ...
Mike Van Ryn Is Having A Rough Year [NHL]
Deadspin —
The NHL season is only a few weeks old, but for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Van Ryn it probably feels like an eternity. Back in October, he removed a pane of glass from the boards in Boston with his face and on Saturday night he was on the receiving end of this rather nasty boarding penalty from Montreal's Tom Kostopoulous. I think he's going to feel that one in the morning. Van Ryn was merely roughed up on the glass shattering incident, but on this one he suffered "a concussion, a gash on his forehead, a broken nose and a broken bone in his hand" and will probably be out a month. Tom Kostopoulous got ...
Stopping The Spin: The Kostopolous Assault
Pension Plan Puppets —
No idea if I'll do this more often but here's another response to Damien Cox's "blog" (ie extra column that didn't make the newspaper because it wasn't good enough). I submitted part of it as a comment so we'll see if it gets 'moderated'.

NHL to Take 2nd Look at Hit on Van Ryn
Hockey Beat —
The NHL will be reviewing Tom Kostopoulos’ (Montreal Canadiens) hit on Mike Van Ryn (Toronto Maple Leafs). Van Ryan has subsequently been sidelined for at least a month with a concussion, gash to the forehead, broken nose and a broken bone in his hand. Yeah, he basically got pretty jacked up.
Kostopoulos got a major penalty for boarding and was thrown out of the game.
"It was a dirty hit," Leafs forward Matt Stajan told reporters following the game. "It’s something that can’t happen in the game. Luckily, we made them pay."

Joke Thing
HockeyAnalysis.com —
Joke Thing November 10th, 2008 by Jason Chen | Posted in Other The NHL once again proves to the world that it’s a joke. Tom Kostopoulos was suspended 3 games starting from today for his hit on Mike Van Ryn . Van Ryn, acquired from the Panthers this year in exchange for Bryan McCabe , suffered facial lacerations, a broken nose and bone, and a concussion. A year ago, Randy Jones hit Patrice Bergeron from behind along the end boards and Bergeron ended up missing the entire season with a concussion. The suspension? 2 games. I’ve seen the replays, and to me the hits look practically identical. A race to the puck at the end of the ice with ...
The Morning Skate: Bettman Says Head-Shot Rule Would 'Change the Game'
Slap Shot —
N.H.L. Commissioner Gary Bettman appeared on Michael Landsberg’s TSN show “Off the Record” yesterday and among the questions thrown his way was whether he would like to see hits to the head made illegal.“It’s not a simple question,” the commissioner replied. “If I take my elbow and I knock it into your head, with the intent of injuring you, that’s a far different act than eliminating what would otherwise be a clean body check. When you say ‘Should it be a penalty?’ The fact is, what if at the last second, you turn your back on me and I’m going to check you, what if at the last second you bend over and what wouldn’t have been a hit to the head turns out to be a hit to the ...
Death to the trapezoid! NHLPA talks about dumping rule change
Puck Daddy —
When discussing the goaltending "trapezoid," I think it's important to disclose yet again that I'm a New Jersey Devils fan; because this post-lockout rules change was created, in part, to undermine one of the exemplary skills of their franchise player, Martin Brodeur. Like other goalies, his ability to handle the puck as a de facto third defenseman allowed defensive systems to flourish. (The ability of a puck-handling goalie to contribute to a transition offense never really factored into the equation.) How effective has the rule been in creating more offense and speeding up the game? Well, attacking players ...
Things that weren’t as hurtful as Sean Avery’s words
The Two-Line Pass —
I am trying to compile a list of things that the NHL has deemed less-bad than Sean Avery’s words. If you can find videos of other suspension-worthy clips, send them along. Six games for words. Unbelievable.
He’d have been better off calling Phaneuf the N word.
Other notable NHL suspensions, all with video, after the jump. Be sure to drop some I may have missed in the comments.
