Don't say I never taught you anything. While Mr. Irrelevant no doubt owns the vintage commercial market, also found at The Bog and Fanhouse, my wayback machine works even better. First enjoy the Oscar worthy acting performance of Art Monk, Gary Clark, and Darrell Green (is he in the locker or isn't he? I'm riveted!) There is nothing preempting another meeting of minds such as the one above in the 21st century. Gary Clark, D. Green, and The Monk are all alive and well and should they awake tomorrow with the urge to shill for Pizza Hut, you'd be talking yourself into a delicious anchove pizza at this moment. Hogs ...

Somebody put a stopwatch on this young upstart. Snyder likes the cut of his jib. I learned something today. Namely, that in 1958, NFL broadcasts were sponsored by Marlboro and America was an awesome place to be. Just watching this old commercial makes me want to drive a Packard, drink scotch and listen to be-bop on the Hi-Fi. Pay special attention to the cartoon mascots of the era: The Redskins mascot: probably the most racist thing in the history of Western Civilization. The Packers proxy is a cleaver wielding maniac. How did Marlboro anticipate Jeffrey Dahmer? True story: the Cleveland ...

The Patriots have offered former Dolphin linebacker Zach Thomas a contract. Adam Teicher thinks that it is unlikely that the Chiefs extend Jared Allen a long-term contract offer. I almost certainly think they will. The use of the franchise tag is a strategic move used by the Chiefs to have more power over Allen and his rights as a free agent. It isn't a firm declaration of anything really. At least not at this point in the game. The Chiefs will get it done. KC Chiefs Fanatic is starting their own mock draft, with the results based on voting. Bookmark the site and head on over there to vote on your picks. ...

1958 Commercial: 'Where You Find Pro Football, You Find Marlboro Cigarettes'
Published 2/19/2008 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
Filed under: NFL Fans, NFL Video, NFL Media WatchHow much has professional football changed in the last half Century? This much: That video, courtesy of Hogs Haven, comes from 1958, and it extols the virtues of two great American institutions, professional football and Marlboro cigarettes. It's a reminder of a different time in America, a time when NFL players smoked in the locker room at halftime, a time when an advertising slogan like "you get better makins" apparently made sense, a time when racist caricatures of American Indians were still tolerated. OK, so we've still got ...

The NFL, brought to you by cigarettes and racism
Published 2/19/2008 at Shutdown Corner
Hogs Haven dug up this beautiful clip of an NFL commercial from 1958, back when pro football was proudly sponsored by Marlboro. What better way to relax after running a deep post than to enjoy a nice, relaxing pack of Marlboro Reds. One cigarette, and you may never run again. I love the cartoon representations of the NFL teams, too. Obviously, the Redskins guy is blatantly racist, but you know, it was 1958, and we'd never allow that happen in today's more enlightened age. I also love the Packers guy who swings a giant meat cleaver, the 49er sans mustache, but with a ...

1950s Marlbolo NFL ads sort of racist, also cigarette-y
Published 2/19/2008 by PostmanR at The Postmen // A Sports Blog // Chicago, IL.
If there was some way to have my TV illicit broadcasts all day from the 1950s — I don’t want to go back in time, eff crew tops and plaid short sleeve shirts — by golly, I think I would really enjoy that. Seriously, why is there not a channel that just plays overtly racist, sexist and odd PSAs and commercials from that time period all the day long? We can all point, laugh and say: “look how far our country has come in the past 50 years!” (Oh, riiiight. Sigh.) This must surely be a higher, more fulfilling sense of entertainment than “Making the Band 4″ or “Bad Girls ...

I'm Not Sure What "Better Makins" Are But I Really Want A Cigarette

I'm going to agree with PostmanR on this one and sign off on an all 1950's Black and White Commercial Channel. I could watch old ads all day long, but they'd all have to be as awesome as this... Man, they were pretty openly racist in ads back then weren't they? I'd really like to know if that was the official mascot of the Redskins or something Malboro added in. Ah, The Memories: Football, Racism, And Cigarettes
Published 2/19/2008 by Anthony Hall at MVN Outsider
If, by chance, you were around for the 1958 NFL season, then this video should bring back a few memories. And if you’re like me and weren’t even around for the freakin’ 1970s, then you should get a few chuckles from this old-time NFL broadcast: You’ve gotta love the blatant racism of the 1950s…in today’s world, it’s hard to imagine that the Redskins cartoon in that video was once allowed to be broadcast on national television. I mean, I still think the Redskins is a racist team name, but at least those kinds of obviously racist images no longer have a place in professional sports. ...

Finally Hanging ’Em Up

Fidel Castro resigned the Cuban presidency yesterday. In so doing, he also relinquished the coveted title of WMBOD, which of course is short for world’s most baseball-obsessed dictator — a lofty perch for which he had no serious competition. Although Castro dabbled in a number of sports, including table tennis, basketball, golf, and boxing, his first love was always baseball. The oft-repeated story about him supposedly having gotten a tryout with the Washington Senators is total bunk, but it’s true that he long harbored a fantasy of playing for the Yankees (where El Duque and Jose ...

When Smoking Was Still Cool
Published 2/21/2008 by Dave at Dave's Football Blog
This video clip has been all over the webtertubes this week, but it’s worth another look, just for its historical significance. It’s a TV spot from 50 years ago — complete with horribly stereotyped cartoon mascots — in which Marlboro cigarettes declares itself a proud sponsor of the National Football League. There must be some old ads like this for football in other countries, right? I mean, aside from the old “Accrington Stanley? Who’er dey?” spot… (Spotted by Hogs Haven via Mighty MJD.)
