Ref Jim Quirk Tackles Packers' Nick Barnett
Published 12/25/2007 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
Filed under: Packers, NFL VideoThe oddest thing that happened at Soldier Field during Sunday's Bears beatdown of the Packers (other than, you know, a bad team blowing out a good team) was this tackle-from-behind that the umpire, Jim Quirk, put on Packers linebacker Nick Barnett: Quirk thought Barnett was about to get in a fight with a Bears player, so he grabbed him from behind around the neck and wrestled him to the ground. The NFL says Barnett will not be disciplined for the incident, but the Packers are suggesting that Quirk should be: Coach Mike ...

Nick Barnett Gets Taken Down By Referee Jim Quirk
Published 12/26/2007 at FanIQ Blog
In an odd way, this video of Barnett being tackled and taken down by a ref half his size serves of my favorite highlight of Week 16. So I was a little surprised to see the headline this morning: Nick Barnett won't face any disciplinary action from the league. I sure hope not. Can we get an unnecessary roughness called on an official? We've seen tackles like this on quarterbacks get the excessive fine treatment.

Nick Barnett to File Grievance Against Official That Took Him Down
Published 12/27/2007 by Ryan Wilson at FanHouse
Filed under: Bears, Packers, NFC North Yesterday, Michael David Smith showed you the moving pictures of umpire Jim Quirk slapping the camel clutch on Packers linebacker Nick Barnett. The first time I saw it I thought it was a bit much, but then again, I've never tried to break up a fight between a field full of angry meat heads. I can understand Quirk wanting to keep the peace, but as MDS pointed out, there are less physical ways of doing it. Whatever, Barnett didn't find the humor in getting body slammed by an old-timer on regional television, so he's ...

The Ref won!

Nick Barnett is sort of mad at that ref
Published 12/27/2007 by 100% Injury Rate at 100% Injury Rate
I didn't really think much of Nick Barnett being taken down by an NFL ref this past weekend. It only registered for about a second before I moved on to more important things, like figuring out how a perpetually drunk Kyle Orton could lead the Bears to such an impressive victory. I was ready to forget about Barnett, and most importantly, his embarrassing moment. But Barnett won't let me do that. That's because his agent told ESPN on Wednesday that the linebacker will file a grievance against linebacker-killer Jim Quirk. The league told Quirk he went "over the line" when he ...

Crazy Barnett Flys Off the Deep End; Set to File Grievance Against Ump
Published 12/27/2007 by Matt Loede at NFL GridIron Gab
Packers linebacker Nick Barnett is set to file a grievance against a ref that pulled him down by the collar during Sunday’s blowout loss to the Bears Sunday in Chicago. The umpire - Jim Quirk, pulled Barnett down trying to break up a small skirmish during the game. Barnett was not all that happy about the takedown, and quickly came up and put his hands on the umpire. The league has ruled it will take no action against Barnett for that. The league has already stated that they have warned Quirk about putting his hands on players, but no other action will be taken. Packers coach Mike ...

Officials Will Answer To Nobody!
Published 12/27/2007 at End Zone Buzz
Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett got wrestled down by official Jim Quirk on Sunday (video below), and he's none too happy about it. > He's so upset that he is going to file a grievance with the NFL against Quirk, according to ESPN. Barnett's agent accurately states that had his client done something to that effect, there would be hell to pay: > "If Nick pushes [Quirk] to the ground just as a response, he'd be suspended and fined a couple of hundred grand." > > As far as discipline, Quirk apparently got a stern talking to, and told to please not do that any more. Which is yet ...

Umpire scores 2 points on linebacker take down.
Published 12/27/2007 by Kirkendall <info@cincyjungle.com> at Cincy Jungle: Front Page Posts
What happens when a 232-pound linebacker with over 600 career tackles gets wrestled to the ground by a referee? A grievance. No, seriously. It's nothing to take on a 300-pound lineman looking to take you out. It's nothing to collide with a running back with both going at full speed. An umpire takes a linebacker to the ground. Laughable. Reminds me of that beer commercial where the defense huddles up with one player promising a beer if they get to the quarterback -- or stop the play. Whatever. Then the ref, overhearing the bet in the huddle, takes out the quarterback on his own. Sorry. I just can't bring myself to take a linebacker's ...

Nick Barnett Takes on City Hall
Published 12/27/2007 by Albert Bianchi at Dejuiced! Sports News with No Boundaries
Nick Barnett wants an apology from the NFL and official Jim Quirk for the choke-hold Quirk administered on Barnett during a scuffle in last Sunday’s Bears-Packers game. Barnett was expected to file a formal grievance, but now appears to only want an apology.  NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s expected response is to tell Barnett he’s lucky it wasn’t Ed Hochuli and to suspend Barnett for four games. Nobody questions the National Football League, not while big Rog’ is in charge.   Share This

Nick Barnett - Pwn3d!
Published 12/27/2007 by J-Red at East Coast Bias
Thanks to Dill_Pickle at Yardbarker for bringing this to my attention. Watch umpire Jim Quirk decide that he's had enough of Packer LB Nick Barnett's participation in a little scrum with the Bears. My only disappointment is that Quirk could have totally put him in a German Suplex, but instead just went to the ground with him. Barnett has dropped his union grievance, instead asking for an apology from the league. His agent, Chuck Price, is an idiot for giving this story any more play than it already received. ...

Ref-Turned-Wrestler Jim Quirk Makes Playoffs
Published 1/6/2008 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
Filed under: Jaguars, Packers, Steelers, PittsburghAs you may recall, an official named Jim Quirk was docked a week's pay by the NFL for dragging down Packers linebacker Nick Barnett from behind in this incident: The league clearly thought Quirk crossed the line there -- getting docked 1/17 of your pay is significant -- but the league also apparently thought Quirk did a pretty good job this year, because he's working tonight's Steelers-Jaguars game. The NFL assigns officials to playoff games based on their performance during the regular season, so Quirk ...

NFL to Emphasize Group Hugs Between Players, Officials in '08; Nick Barnett Skeptical
Published 4/1/2008 by Ryan Wilson at FanHouse
Filed under: NFL Fans Welcome to a kinder, gentler NFL, where it's still perfectly acceptable to take somebody's head off during the play, but after the whistle, it's all about the Kumbaya vibe. One of the officiating points of emphasis for next season includes an enforcement of "mutual respect" guidelines in the interaction between players and officials. Finally, New-Age pragmatism finds its way to professional football. About freaking time. As the Washington Post's Mark Maske writes, the point of emphasis is a consequence of the Dec. 3 ...
