‘DOCK ELLIS AND THE LSD NO-NO’ FTW
With Leather — The awesomeness is emanating out of No Mas like butter through the pores of an obese child being chased down the street. This is an incredibly well-done animated short from James Blagden chronicling what might have happened to Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis before his famous June 12, 1970 no-hitter against San Diego. Ellis claims he was on LSD at the time, and really the only way this could be better is if you popped a blotter yourself before watching. ...

The Dock Ellis Dees
Where Have You Gone, Andy Van Slyke? — Great, great stuff from No Mas and artist James Blagden. The audio is from an interview with Dock Ellis that apppeared on NPR's "Weekend America" about nine months before his death last December. I could watch this all day.

Dock Ellis' no-hitter on acid becomes great animated short film
Big League Stew — The next time someone compiles a list of the greatest baseball films ever, the work won't be complete until it includes this 4-1/2 minute animated short by artist James Blagden. It's a moment-by-moment imagining of the time in 1970 when Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Dock Ellis, so he famously claimed, pitched a no-hitter while tripping on acid. Brought to light by the sports and culture site No Mas, the film is a surreal trip in itself. And no psychedelic drugs are needed to enjoy it to the fullest. It uses audio — which is precious to begin with — of Ellis telling the story himself ...

Ellis, D. Watch This Right Now.
pitchers & poets — I don’t normally just post random stuff here, but this is more than worth it. It’s a rendering of the famed Dock Ellis LSD-no hitter, with narration by Dock himself.  The killer animation is by James Blagden. Thanks to RBI artist Mark Penxa for passing this along: ...

Doc Ellis' LSD no hitter animation
Mandatory Mustache — This is amazing. No, there are Mets involved, but it's too good not to share. And there is a mustache prominently featured. I'd heard about this game a number of times, but I had never actually heard Ellis talk about it. Some great illustrations add to the experience. ...

Open Thread: Ooh, I scored a touchdown
River Avenue Blues — If you watch this and don’t laugh, I’ll be disappointed. It’s been all around the Internet today, but I’ll thank commenter pat for being the first to tip me off. For those who want to read a bit more about the Ellis experience, Snopes has a lengthy look. While Ellis didn’t play for the Yankees in my lifetime, he did play for them when my dad was my age, so I’ve heard plenty about him and about that era in general. That led me to read up a lot about it. I always thought it was a shame that Dock didn’t win a World Series with ...

Get Back to Work!
The Futility Infielder — Not a whole lot to report here that hasn't been reported elsewhere. The Hot Stove season is upon us and after busting my butt to cover the postseason, I'm playing catch-up with my allotment of Baseball Prospectus 2010 comments. With my wife out of town on a business trip for a few days, I've taken the opportunity to bury myself in Dodger prospect minutiae while still keeping tabs on the various trade and free agent rumors going around, mostly via Twitter ...

Baseball’s Most Famous Acid Trip, Masterfully Retold
Can't Stop The Bleeding — “Of the 263 no-hitters ever thrown in the Big Leagues,” mused the folks at No Mas in an e-mail messages earlier today, “we can only guess how many were aided by steroids, but we can say without question that only one was ever thrown on acid.”  And while the late Dock Ellis’ 1970 no-hitter has been mentioned in this space, chronicled by someone far more skilled, and recalled by artists including but not limited to musician Barbara Manning and painter Jay Kaplan, no one has ever tackled this historic event quite like illustrator ...

Baseball Cartoons, Liga Dominicana, Elijah Dukes
Bugs & Cranks — Just watched the animated short film about Dock Ellis’ no-hitter on acid that Answer Dave Brown posted on Big League Stew yesterday.  It’s fabulous, but the weird thing is I’m not sure that’s even the strangest baseball cartoon I’ve seen this week. Tuesday night I flipped on ESPN Desportes and saw a crazy walkoff finish that gave Los Toros del Este a 5-4 win over Los Tigres del Licey, and put them in sole possession of first place.  So I went looking for video of that on youtube, and found this instead: Shit like that and Sabado Gigantico ...

Dock Ellis: “It was easier to pitch with the LSD, because I was just so used to medicating myself.”
Steady Burn — A team of crack geniuses from the blog No Mas produced an animated short about the no-hitter that Dock Ellis threw while trippin’ on acid. The audio is taken from an interview Ellis conducted with writer Donnell Alexander. 100 H/Tees to my man @AsilentFlute for sending this to me, because it is just so great. One time I covered first base, and I caught the ball and tagged the base all in one motion. I said, “OOH, I just made a touchdown.”

The Cub Reporter (TCR) | A Chicago Cubs Blog — A little under the weather and mourning the end of the Bears season, so some brief notes to hold you over for the weekend. -  To add fuel to my "they better offer Rich Harden arbitration" fire, the Seattle Times suggest the Mariners have some interest in Rich Harden as I imagine a few teams will. - Our pal Alex Eisenberg at Baseball Intellect has a new premium article scouting left-handed pitcher James Paxton (drafted by the Blue Jays in the supplemental round in the 2009 draft). A Fine Cartoon On Dock Ellis’ LSD-Fueled No-No
SPORTSbyBROOKS — If you haven’t seen this yet, buckle up, kiddies; it’s time to look back at a different time, a different era, back when men were men, women were burning bras, and pitchers were on acid on the mound. The legend of Dock Ellis‘ no-hitter while he was high is relatively well-known, but most people just know the basics: that he was a pitcher, on acid, throwing a no-no. Dock Ellis on LSD ...

Dock Ellis, LSD, and the No-Hitter
Advanced Fantasy Baseball — This is getting around but its so funny that I want to share it too. It was made by one of the guys at No Mas - a New York Yankees blog. It features former Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher Doc Ellis and the story behind his no-hitter, which he says he did on LSD. He even claims that he could not see the hitters, just the catcher and a general impression of whether the batter was on the left or the right. You want to watch this and definitely check out No Mas. ...

Most points by a rook since ‘68? Pitch a no hitter on acid? Anything can happen on any given day. Or night.
Fear The Beard — Dock Ellis achieved the single greatest athletic feat ever accomplished by a man who admittedly was under the influence of psychedelics. Recently deceased, this version of his tale, animated by the good folks at our NYC-based kindred spirits at No Mas and narrated by Ellis himself, is an instant classic. R.I.P. Dock, R.I.P. Watching it made me wonder if Brandon Jennings was loose off of two tabs of Mellow Yellow. See, Jennings torched the Warriors for the most points by a rookie (55) since Earl “The Pearl” Monroe went off for 56–41 years ago. He was clearly out of his mind. ...

Show the No-No
baseballmusings.com — If you would like to see Dock Ellis’s LSD no hitter on the MLB network, you might want to sign the petition here. In case you haven’t seen it, there’s an animated short with Dock describing how he came to throw a no-hitter that day. I particularly like the part about Dave Cash telling Ellis he had a no-no, and all the veterans getting mad at him for doing it. I also understand why MLB doesn’t wish to show this game. The organization is putting out an anti-drug message right now, and showing someone having a great deal of success high may run against that message. Still it would be great to see this game with what we ...

SportsFilter — Alice D. Nono : Over the last decade or so we've heard all too much about performance enhancing drugs in sport, and not enough about supposedly performance inhibiting drugs. Hilarious Heavy Drug Use Videos of the Day
Not Qualified To Comment — The acid this guy was on must have been pretty strong. Apparently he was tripping on some LSD when he was locked in a closet with a recorder. This video is the nonsensical crap that came out of his mouth (and for some reason an animated lizard acting it out). Enjoy. My favorite is probably Mr. Balloon Hands. Yeah right. Get real. But then, over time, as other people learned the story and it got told too many times, it just sort of lost its elasticity, like a worn-out pair of boxer shorts. The Dock Ellis-LSD-No Hitter story is kinda like that. Awesome story. Heard it a million times. What else you got? Until today. Actually, until about a week ago.
