Comedian C-O-M-E-D-I-A-N Comedian
Hugging Harold Reynolds — Who says these awkward, sheltered spelling bee kids don't have personalities? When Jahnavi Iyer, a 14-year-old from Enola, Pa., was stuck on "solidungulate," she asked for the language of origin, the definition and the pronunciations, as most competitors do. Stumped, she finally asked "for an easier word." The judges laughed out loud. And then there's champion Sameer Mishra: Well played, Mishra. Well played. Give our best to EA. ...

Spelling Bee: 'Numnah' Sounds Like 'Numbnut'
FanHouse — Filed under: Washington, DC, High School, TV and MoviesAt last night's National Spelling Bee, 13-year-old Sameer Mishra provided some comic relief when he misheard the word "numnah": For those who don't know, "numnah" is a type of sheepskin pad. When Mishra was presented with that word, he initially thought the pronouncer said "numbnut," an insult best known from the movie Full Metal Jacket, when Sargent Hartman yells at Private Pyle, "What is your major malfunction, numbnut?" Mishra shook off any embarrassment and ended up winning the bee by correctly ...

Numbnuts for the Spelling Bee win
Uncommon Sportsman — "Numnah" "Numb nut?"

Noun. 1.) A Generalized Loss Of Feeling In The Testicles 2.) Roger Clemens [What's Your Major Malfunction, Numbnuts?]
Deadspin — With Erin Andrews frolicking around backstage, who could blame eventual grand champion of the spelling world Sameer Mishra to let loose a little Freudian slip? How else is he supposed to sublimate that sexual energy? Rub your finger on your hand any harder and it's playing with yourself. The actual word here, numnah, is a pad placed under a saddle, so used to prevent the occurrence of numbnuts. The ironies, I feels it! ...

Wait, What Did He Say?
FanIQ Blog — Believe it or not, I actually once covered the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Unfortunately for me, nothing this hilarious happened when I was there. This is eventual champ Sameer Nishra who was asked to spell the word "numnah." But that's not what Sameer originally heard, nor was it what I originally heard. I tell you, those spelling bee judges - total perverts. [HT: Deadspin]

Next, spell "Dickwad"
Pure Point — This has got to be the funniest spelling related video I've ever seen. Well, maybe any video of Evan O'Dorney can give it a run for its money.

Did You Say “Numnah” or “Numbnut?”
MVN Outsider — Amidst the boredom of last night’s Scripps Nationals Spelling Bee — which somehow landed a spot on primetime national television — there was a moment that lightened the mood of the usually-tense competition. Sameer Mishra, from West Lafayette, Indiana, was asked to spell the word “numnah,” but he thought the judge gave him a totally different word: Indeed, I can understand why he made the mistake; with the cameras focused on you, millions of television viewers watching you at home, and Erin Andrews covering the event, it’s gotta be tough to focus. (Seriously, how is a 13-year-old boy ...

How Do You Spell Numbnuts?
Larry Brown Sports — Anyone who’s been reading the site for some time knows quite well how much I enjoy the Scripps Annual Spelling Bee. Some of the greatest moments in the bee were classics, like the kid who got KO’d by the power of the word, and the dude who did a Napoleon Dynamite impression. Those were all solid and highly enjoyable, and now numb nuts makes its way onto the list as well. In case you missed a great moment in Bee history, here it is: Of course as funny as that was, nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever stand up to last year’s champ, Evan ...

Numbnuts, N-U-M-B-N-U-T-S, Numbnuts
Foul Balls — I remember sitting at the bar with some friends on Friday night when Sportscenter showed the highlight of this kid spelling a word at the Scripps Annual Spelling Bee. The sound on the television was off, but I saw the word numnah, and after pronouncing it to myself I thought, "Hey! That sounds a lot like numbnuts! If I was that kid, I would have just pretended I heard the word numbnuts, and spell that, because I'm a rebel who doesn't play by your spelling bee rules. I'm the new face of the sport." Needless to say, my friends were very impressed with my new badass persona. Then I saw the video with actual audio yesterday, and hey, whaddya ...

National Spelling Bee: Numbnut?!?!?!
Hail Mary Jane — Ok so before I show you this really funny video from the National Spelling Bee, I have a question.  Why is it that the Spelling Bee is considered a sport??  Why do they show it on ESPN.   I mean are they trying to make geeks feel like jocks?  Do they want them to feel cool??? Anyway, heres a video from the spelling bee that features the 2008 winner Sameer Nishra getting tripped up on a word.  Is he a numbnut? Tags: national spelling bee

The Internets: Numnah? Young Clem?

Somebody Call Dr. Phil for the Denver Broncos
Reckless Abandon Sports — Less than two months after firing two-time Super Bowl winning Head Coach Mike Shanahan and hiring his replacement, 32-year old and first-time Head Coach Josh McDaniels, the Denver Broncos find themselves in quite a predicament. It was reported last Saturday that the Broncos were actively shopping QB Jay Cutler, at one point almost agreeing to a three-team trade with the Patriots and Bucs that would have made Matt Cassel the Broncos new starting quarterback. When the trade did not go down, and Cassel was traded to the Chiefs instead, Jay Cutler caught wind of the trade talks and expressed his ...

Erin Andrews would like to have some words with you
Sports stories from Newsday — Nothing that happens in the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals Thursday can match the above moment from last year, and the subsequent interview of the young man in the video by Erin Andrews. But the event always is worth watching, just in case. Ms. Andrews will be back on the job as the sideline reporter, and marked the occasion with interviews here and here in which she discusses the widespread public interest in her clothing choices, her desire to do a guest appearance on "Gossip Girl" and/or "Dancing With the Stars" and other matters of ...
