Here's the moment everyone in the NHL is going to be talking about in the morning: Willie Mitchell's clean, but devastating hit on Jonathan Toews in Chicago on Wednesday night as the Blackhawks hosted the Canucks.
The hit, which came with the Canucks trailing 2-1 in a game that they eventually won 3-2, has already been talked about as the turning point in on NHL On The Fly: Final, especially as the hit came straight out of a shorthanded situation for Vancovuer, with Mitchell making the hit right after coming out of the penalty box. When Jonathan Toews was a top prospect at the University of North Dakota, I’m not sure he THIS was the part of the NHL that he was looking forward to. The great young leader of the Blackhawks was on the receiving end of the biggest hit of the young season. Apparently, Willie Mitchell didn’t care that he’s only 21 years old. I love Toews’ game and hope he makes Team Canada, but dude needs to keep his head up!
When I saw the hit live, it was one of those plays that you involuntarily yell, “OH SHIT!” Then, I immediately hit rewind on the DV-R to see it again. Take a look for yourself—Toews had no idea what state he was in.
