Walk Off Balk: OK State's Mike Gundy Goes Off
Sports Rumblings | athlete news sports rumors celebrity juice team gossip blog: Oklahoma State Coach Mike Gundy defends Bobby Reid, rips Jenni Carlson
-
Redsauce When people play like crap, they should get called on it. It's that simple. I can understand the desire to defend your players, but come on.
The guy wants to rant & rave, but the 'you don't have a kid' shot's about as low as it goes...thank you, Mr. High & Mighty. Enjoying the view from your pedastal?
-
CrazyFBFan1223 Did u read the article Redsauce? It was ridiculous in terms of personally attacking a player. I dont mean saying something like he's playing bad but calling him a mamas boy. A chicken who doesnt have the guts to play QB. The kid is already benched and you are going to kick him when he is down is simply stupid.
If you read a little more into the lines of the column, Jenni basically says that Reid is just a baby and attacks his manhood. You should really read the article before opening up your mouth.
-
Redsauce I absolutely read the article...several times because I was confused why people were in such an uproar about it. I think I'd try reading my responses further down which make this obvious before you open your mouth...
But keep being a douche if you'd like.
-
CrazyFBFan1223 Why there was an uproar about it? He's a kid. Have you ever played college sports and had such pressure on you? This kid was kicked when he was down and who knows how his psyche is right now. Reid is NOT a pro athlete. He doesnt need to be ridiculed and ripped so personally. When you feel like you have a towns, or even better yet whole states counting on you and you have a bad game, how would you feel when such pressure is on you?-
Redsauce I actually did play college sports (although I'll admit at not such a crazy high level). Read further down--to pretend Reid isn't adequately compensated for his services is ridiculous. It's not the sportswriters' job to care about his psyche--it's to call him out when he's playing like crap.
Where's the uproar when ARod's mental acumen gets called into play? Is there a salary line that if you make over that amount, anyone can say anything about you? I'm just loving the double-standard. Say he's a pro & all that nonsense, but Reid's getting his just like ARod is.
-
CrazyFBFan1223 But thats the point, Reid isnt a pro athlete. There SHOULD be a line drawn when it comes down to personal life. I agree that if he plays bad, then the media has every right to call for him to be benched or call for the backup. But to attack a persons manhood and call him a baby with such a personal attack is completely uncalled for.-
Redsauce My last say on the matter:
Why's it OK to "attack a persons manhood and call him a baby" when it's his job as opposed to his hobby which he just happens to get handsomely compensated for?
-
CrazyFBFan1223 How do you know he's being compensated for it? :P I just think there should be a limit as to what is said about college athletes. Most of them (not all because you know some of them are paid. lol) arent compensated and are more students then athletes hence why i say there should be a line drawn. If its a pro athlete and its there job, by all means they chose to be in the public eye as such and should be critized when playing bad.
-
-
-
-
-
Redsauce lol
Seriously? I get voted down for defending myself & responding to a personal attack ("You should really read the article before opening up your mouth.") Hilarious.

Zorgon Article in question: newsok.com/article/3131543
She does say a lot of insulting off the field things about the QB, and says that the coaching staffs mind was basically made up that he wouldn't start because of his attitude. She does mention, several times, that he was hand-fed chicken by his mother, and that says everything about his attitude.
So, I do believe Mike Gundy was somewhat in the right. But, the QB should NOT have to have chicken hand fed to him, and Mike Gundy should really not read some of the other stuff that comes out of the Craplahomans columnists.
-
Redsauce She mentions the chicken thing three times in the entire article. What does she say that's so bad? She basically writes that he doesn't have the attitude to cut it right now as the starting quarterback. She questions his drive.
Seriously, if this is the first time Mike Gundy's had one of his players' attitudes questions, then he's been coaching soccer for 4 year olds. Give me a break.
-
airraid81 Funny press conference. -
KyleS Granted, the thing about him being fed chicken seemed cheap - I'm assuming his mom just brought him some and didn't hand feed it to him - but aren't coaches supposed to hold players accountable? Maybe there's a reason Ok. St. is an underachieving team.
-
Woody Getting personal with the "this person has never had a child" bit might come back to bite him, but Gundy was completely justified in going after Jenni Carlson. Devoting an entire column to blasting a student athlete is a dubious move. Throw in the fact that it was all based on rumors and off-field stuff and she deserves the criticism.-
Redsauce Because sportswriters have never written a column about how they think a certain athlete stinks, this is a totally never-before-heard-of situation.
And isn't this what sportswriters are supposed to do? Write their opinions on sports? Report why a guy gets benched?
-
Woody Professional athletes should expect to be called out when they play like crap. But picking on college kids just isn't cool.
-
KyleS If college athletes don't want to be criticized, they shouldn't play. It's a huge business with enormous exposure. Don't like it? They should take up water polo. Nobody will say a word.-
Digital Headbutt It is a huge business, but aside from the exposure, college athletes don't see a dime for their services. Questioning a student-athlete's tangibles (their on-field performance ans skill) is completely fair game; questioning their mental fortitude is somegthing else completely. It's important to use personal discretion in that regard, and it appears that Jenni Carlson did not.
Having said that, the clip is awesome.
-
-
-
-
-
Redsauce It's laughable to think that college athletes don't see any money for their services. Want to pretend that these athletes are actually 'student-athletes'? I highly recommend taking Jim Harrick Jr.'s test to see how much of the 'student' part of that shows through.
Keep in mind I'm not saying that every 'student-athlete' is solely an athlete. I'm saying the vast majority are. Pretending that college sports isn't big business & that these athletes aren't compensated is ridiculous.
-
El Stevo09 Your article/test link simply shows that it is more about the business versus the student (which was wrong as the NCAA found) which in essence supports everyone blogging here that Jenni Carlson was wrong for her article.
Not that something like this hasn't been written before on another athlete, nor do we know that a coach called the reporter on it. The beauty of it is that everyone who even just watches the video, will side with Gundy because he is right. They're kids.
-
-
JaketheSnake But Bobby Reid is who Dennis Green thought he was. -
Digital Headbutt And Donovan Woods let him off the hook. -
mikeismad Watch out he may come after you next: http://www.mikegundyismadatyou.com -
CrazyFBFan1223 Forgot to mention this. Sorry about the personal attack Red. Unfortunately ive been on the end of some of those attacks in a paper and so has some of my friends and let me tell you it sucks. I do believe coach Gundy had every right to protect his players and if i was a parent and read that column, i would be pretty upset also. To attack such a person in such a negative way when he is already down and and benched is completely uncalled for.
On a side note, i am glad that coach Gundy spoke from the heart and shot this one from the hip. It made it that much more real.

Football Outsiders —
Printable version Confessions of a Football Junkie: Patience 11/12/2007 by Russell Levine Patience, a principle too-seldom exercised in the cutthroat world of college football, is proving its worth in this enigmatic season. A quick glance at the Bowl Championship Series rankings — which now feature LSU and Oregon in the top positions after Illinois stunned previous No. 1 Ohio State Saturday — lists several programs that might not be enjoying their current success had they listened to the whims of fans and alumni, and cut the cords on previously struggling coaches. Rumors and Rants —
Jenni Carlson is back at it. No, not angering Mike Gundy to the point of hilarity (and a contract extension). She is, however, making noise with claims of sexism without proper context. The last time this happened -- at least that I was paying attention -- was during the "infamous" incident regarding the Chicago White Sox and some blow-up dolls who made their way into the clubhouse. That's when Jenni opined that the presence of the blow-up dolls made it uncomfortable for any female reporter in the clubhouse who was just trying to do her job. Which is a fair enough sentiment -- had there actually been ...
OK State Still Profiting From Pickens’ Big Donation
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
Boone Pickens‘ big donation to Oklahoma State University has turned into quite the money maker for the Cowboys , even if it hasn’t made any football or basketball champs yet. Oklahoma State Cowboys ball Darren Rovell of CNBC crunches the numbers of the oil man’s gift, in which he gave his alma mater $165 million to help his school further excel on the court & on the field. Although the moolah hasn’t brought any Big 12 titles yet, it has brought something just as important - even more dough. Rovell explains that one condition of Pickens’ original donation was that the money would be put back into Boone’s BP Capital investment firm. And it ...
Bizarre Twists in Internet Hoax Story
The Wiz of Odds —
That Nebraska fan who created the bogus webpage and story about Oklahoma quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Landry Jones being arrested on cocaine distribution charges? He happens to be the computing services manager in the information technology department at the University of Texas. James Conradt's hoax spread quickly Wednesday through cyberspace and was reported as fact by at least two Texas radio stations. Although he apologized, Conradt's legal problems are growing. Jones' dad said he is considering prosecuting Conradt "to the fullest extent of the law." Now Oklahoman publisher David Thompson is considering legal ...
Bullfeathers!
Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician —
So let's quickly get up to speed on this whole Oklahoma Football Message Board Rumor fiasco, shall we? Wizard of Odds, help us out: James Conradt, a Nebraska fan living in Austin, finds himself in considerable trouble today. On Wednesday, Conradt lifted a template off the website of the Oklahoman and created a bogus page and story about Sooner quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Landry Jones being arrested on cocaine distribution charges. Conradt then posted the story on a message board and it was soon reported as fact on at least two Texas radio ...
Bullfeathers! Message Boards are Pure Evil!
The Big Lead —
Anyone familiar with Berry Tramel of the Oklahoman? Over the weekend he felt like painting and whipped out the broadest brush he could find: Message boards are avatars of evil. It’s all because a “dweeb” in the heartland created a hoax recently, claiming two Oklahoma QBs were busted for drugs. The “dweeb” is going to get sued.
Tramel claims anyone who simply ventures onto a message board is an accomplice to a crime:
“Message boards are a weapon. They’re a haven for people to carry out anonymous attacks. They’ve got no more redeeming quality than ...
Media news: LA Times bloodbath, bloggers get richer, disillusioned print media
Press Row —
- The prolonged march of death for the newspaper industry continued today as the LA Times laid off 150 (!!!) of their staffers, all part of a greater plan of eventually cutting the cord on 250 employees (!!?!??!), or 17% of their staff.
The mass genocide coincided with the resignation of Ann Marie Lipinski, 52, as editor of the Chicago Tribune and the “resignation” of LA Times Publisher David Hiller—although Hiller believes he was ousted by Tribune Chairman and Chief Executive Sam Zell, and I’ve heard that was basically flat-out fired.
While not entirely sports related, these layoffs are ...

Clippers Aren't Getting Any Better Younger
WCBias | West Coast Bias Sports Blog | West Coast Sports News by West Coast Sports Fans, Covering Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers and All Things West Coast —
The Clippers have added another aging player to their lineup. Welcome “White Chocolate,” otherwise known as Jason Williams, to La-La Land. Since their woeful season mercifully came to a close, that other team in L.A. has added 10 new players to its 14-player roster. Problem is those players aren’t exactly “new.” Gone are Elton Brand and Corey Maggette, i.e. players in their prime. In are 30-somethings Williams, 32, Marcus Camby, 34, Jason Hart, 30, Cuttino Mobley, 33, Brian Skinner, 32, Tim Thomas, 31 and Dan Dickau, 30 next month, i.e. players no longer in their prime. Then there’s Baron Davis and Ricky Davis, who turn 30 ...

He’s A Man! He’s 41! Happy B-Day, Mike Gundy!
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
Happy Birthday, Mike Gundy ! The Oklahoma State football coach famous for his Youtube-cherished “I’m a Man!” rant turns 41 today. Mike Gundy ranting Bill Haisten of the TULSA WORLD shares what fun activities the Cowboy coach has planned for his special day . Surprisingly, Mike wants it subdued:“I don’t look forward to birthdays anymore. To be honest, I’d rather be 40 than 41,” Gundy said. “It’ll be a normal birthday for me two-a-day football practice. Kristen (Gundy’s wife Kristen) will bring a big cake up here for the team.” Exciting! While passing out the cake pieces, any chance for an encore performance of Gundy coming to pieces himself? HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EARL WEAVER: A CELEBRATION OF TIRADES!
ESPNtheMag.com - MagDaily —
Today is Earl Weaver's birthday (he's 78). Perhaps the master of the tirade, Weaver's birthday compels us to revisit this interview we did months back with Lee Elia on the 25th anniversary of his world-famous tirade. It also contains a Clip Reel of the best tirades ever! Bonus: Lee Elia managed the Phillies in the first night game at Wrigley Field, a few years after managing the Cubs. Bonus II: because we've got college football on the brain, here's Mike Gundy's rant from last year. Enjoy it all.
Coaching Approval Ratings: Mike Gundy
Dejuiced! Sports News with No Boundaries —
With Football season right around the corner, we here at Dejuiced! have decided to take a look at the coaches in the NFL and college football to see how well the fans approve of them. Today we look at Mike Gundy.
Before we start looking at Coach Gundy, I’ll get it out of the way. “He’s a man!” OK - I’m done. However, that was one of the all-time classic press conferences in college football. It was one that he would rather rip the media than talk about his team’s win over Texas Tech. But press conferences like that don’t help you ...
Stewart Mandell Thinks Mike Gundy Is A Clown
Crimson And Cream Machine —
We’ll never shy away from taking a shot at Oklahoma State here at the Machine but I don’t know that we’ve ever massed an onslaught like SI.com’s Stewart Mandell. In his College Football Mailbag Mandell’s response to a question from an Oklahoma State fan as to why the Cowboys aren’t getting any love as an up-and-comer in 2008 was that Mike Gundy is a clown, the Cowboys are horrible on defense and Mike Gundy is a clown.
Why is it that the media is practically ignoring Oklahoma State? This team was so balanced last year they had exactly 3,161 yards rushing and passing. QB Zac ...
College Football Kickoff: One Last Look At 2007 Highlights
FanIQ Blog —
Happy College Football Day! Most of your teams aren't playing until Saturday, but tonight we get real actual football on college campuses. I can't be any happier about that.
Before we start making some new highlights, I thought we'd take one last look back on gems of 2007. We can only hope Mike Gundy's rant gets topped. I'd settle for someone even making it into the ballpark.
Michigan falls to Appalachian State in the first game of the season, on Big Ten Network's debut.

Former Oklahoma State QB Bobby Reid Is NOT a Man, NOT 40, and NOT Impressed With Mike Gundy
FanIQ Blog —
Many of us remember the famous Mike Gundy rant. It was all over the place in the weeks following it, and was even spoofed on multiple occasions. Although the consensus was that he had gone a little overboard, many people were impressed with the way Gundy was willing to stand up for one of his players. But surprisingly, that player took it very differently. For those of you who don't, here's a little reminder. ...

Straight Talk In Bruin Nation
Bruins Nation —
We have already had a lot of discussion (here and here) on the football season ad UCLA placed in the LA Times and the Daily News. We are currently running a poll to take a general pulse in terms of reaction to that ad. You can view it on the right hand side of our blog or by going here. Again I believe the ad was more than anything a straight message to the Bruin Nation from Rick Neuheisel. He is telling us directly that he understands what we expect from him in the long term as the head coach of UCLA football program. Rather than engaging in the typical coach speak, Neuheisel is taking on the responsibility ...

Today, Friedgen told Terrapin faithful and members of the local media to get off Steffy’s back :“If you want to boo me, boo me. Don’t boo the kid,” Friedgen said during a media briefing noteworthy for the coach’s intensity, but also for the fact that he wouldn’t commit to starting the fifth-year senior Saturday at Middle Tennessee ...

GAINESVILLE -- Wanna get Tim Tebow riled up? Say something negative about Urban Meyer.
Miami coach Randy Shannon wasn't too happy with Meyer's decision to throw a pass into the end zone and kick a field goal in the final minute or so of the Gators 26-3 win against the Hurricanes on Saturday, and he made a backhanded comment at Meyer.

CGW - Coaches Gone Wild
Thoughts from the Jockstrap —
There's not much I love more than a good rant from a sports coach. I'm not talking about the little league coach who is yelling at parents in the stands and telling them he'll play whoever he wants to play. I mean the classic college or professional sports coach who puts on a great show for the media or the fans. Even though I didn't put one on this list, I love a good baseball manager who gets about four inches from an umpire's face and screams. Then he goes and kicks dirt on the plate. Then he gets really mad, pulls second base up, and launches it into center. I love that. LOVE that. I crack up every time. I may have obsessive-compulsive disorder or something, but ...

It's been funny to watch the back and forth between Alabama and Georgia regarding the whole "Black Out" thing. Here's the full story, but to save time, I'll give you a brief summary. Georgia decides it will wear black jerseys and the fans will wear all black. They'll have a "Black Out" Saban wears a black shirt to a press conference, potentially mocking the situation. Alabama assistant coach gets caught on tape telling the team that GA is wearing black because they are going to a funeral. (Expletives intentionally omitted) Richt wears a red shirt to a press ...

Thporth and The Mrs. are Cubs fans in a strange territory unfamiliar with the workings of Major League Baseball. Fukudome And The Horse You Rode In On

When we learned last year that the hot new Japanese baseball export would be an outfielder with the last name Fukudome, I suspect we all had a hearty chuckle for about five minutes, and then went back to surfing for raccoon-bite porn (or whatever it is we do on the interweb). And while, in the back of our heads, we knew that maybe one day this peculiar name-- say, on the back of a jersey or a t-shirt-- had the potential cause a vaguely comical misunderstanding at the office water-cooler, I would like to have thought that any confusion could be quickly undone by explaining that Fukudome is simply an overrated* Japanese ballplayer who plays for ...

What an ass beating Nebraska took, 52-17. I have not seen any thing that lopsided since Jim Ross. Nebraska was said to play dirty. Well, in a rivalry game, things get a little dirty. Shakeup, Really?
Football Outsiders —
by Russell Levine I suppose we should be used to this by now. Three of the top five teams went down this weekend to once again shake up the poll. But how much has really changed about college football's championship picture? Texas beating Oklahoma was hardly a surprise; both teams were undefeated after authoring a series of routs against mostly overmatched competition. Florida beating LSU was also expected, although the 30-point margin should open some eyes. Florida was at home, at night, and if the SEC has proven anything over the past few seasons, it's that in games among the league's upper echelon, just about anything can and should be expected. Florida ...
College Football Roundup: Carnage Came and Carnage Conquered [College Football]
Deadspin —
For those of you who emailed and asked whether the bearded guy in the orange shirt on the sideline at UT-Georgia was me. Yep, it was. There's a refined sense of pleasure in being a fan and watching your team suffer a drubbing from the sideline. I think I spoke about five words the entire game because I was afraid of getting in the way or getting leveled. Early on one of UT's student managers said, "Clay, keep your head on a swivel." So I was terrified of getting Weis'd and laying on the ground while my cell phone buzzed with text messages from friends making fun of how badly I got wrecked. Slow motion instant replays would not be my friend. I also didn't ...
Tuesday Headlinin': The last day of Tommy Bowden
Dr. Saturday —
• How are you going to criticize a coach who does everything right? So Mike Gundy might ask about Tommy Bowden's unceremonious midseason axing at Clemson, and so The State's Ron Morris does ask today with typical "What's wrong with society" clucking under the actual headline, "Bowden did everything right, except win":Â Bowden did everything right at Clemson. His teams won an average of nearly eight games his first nine seasons. Every one of his teams qualified for a bowl game. His players graduated, and they rarely were involved in off-field ...
Croom: "I don't like those line drives"

I spent more time thinking about punting Saturday than I have in my previous seven-plus seasons covering this great sport of college football. Why? Well, first and foremost, Blake McAdams' performance in Saturday's 17-14 Mississippi State win over No. 13 Vanderbilt, which, of course, I covered. And I wondered if and when he might be subbed out. But he wasn't, and to his credit, he boomed a 48-yarder on his next attempt. The crowd applauded loudly, and I wrote a notebook item about it. In the other color uniforms Saturday, the black and gold ones, it was ...

BrerTiger:
Feeling like Texas might have a hard time getting up for two explosive offenses in a row. Now that Mizzou is coming off the loss, it seems like an especially dangerous game for Texas. I am thinking Mizzou wins this game out right and maybe by a couple of touch downs.
This is just a bit inconsistent. If both teams played explosive offenses last week and both teams face explosive offenses this week then why is Texas going to struggle to get up and not Mizzou?
Does Gary Pinkel possess some magic pill that instantly gets his defense up for explosive offenses when the explosive offenses arrive ...

Hey Jenny Slater's Doug Gillett offers betting advice without bias, malice, or credibility. Or, you know, money. I've probably been less affected by the financial crisis than most (hooray for being too poor to own any stock!), but what the stock-market collapse couldn't accomplish, last week's picks did. Thanks to Vandy's upset loss to Mississippi State, I now have a $3,000 Dwight Eisenhower autograph I have no idea how I'm going to pay for, and that was just the beginning. I've got some ground to make up, so it's go big or go home this week -- and as you can see, I'll be putting some big-ticket items on the line. The ...
Bobby Reid's "a man," but he's becoming "The Man" in SWAC
The Zone Blitz —
Most of you saw Mike Gundy's explosion last season, when he gave a columnist for the Daily Oklahoman a tongue lashing. Gundy yelled (video below) at the columnist, Jenni Carlson, "Come after me. I'm a man. I'm 40. I'm not a kid. Write something about me. Or our coaches. Don't write about a kid that does everything right -- that's heart's broken. And then say that the coaches said he was scared. That ain't true." The line "Come after me. I'm a man. I'm 40. I'm not a kid," is so popular now, it's a punchline to your jokes. But do you remember the "kid" in this story? Most don't. Well, first off he is a man ...
Kicking the Tires: Colorado

A season that started off with high expectations for the Colorado Buffaloes has taken a sour turn the last three weeks. While CU wasn't quite expected to contend for the Big 12 North this season, most probably expected them to be better than last year's 6-7 campaign. Classic Coaching Meltdowns
SportsDystopia —
Since there was no baseball on tonight, no World Series preview to be written, and no part of me that felt like chiming in on the “will they or won’t they collapse?” debate swirling around the Rays at the moment, I decided to do something a little different. The Denny Green tirade I included in yesterday’s game 5 recap got me hungry for some more classic coaching meltdowns, so I decided to track down a few more of the better ones.

Oklahoma State's brave new world, or something like that
Dr. Saturday —
It's a good thing T. Boone Pickens feels like he's getting his money's worth from Oklahoma State, what with the billion-dollar losses and all. He should enjoy it all the way to Saturday, which as far as I can tell may be the biggest date in Cowboy football since World War II. Check the record: OSU hasn't finished in the top-10 since a 9-0 finish in 1945, and since it didn't crack the top-10 in its two best seasons since -- back-to-back 10-2 efforts with Thurman Thomas in 1987 and Barry Sanders in 1988 -- the chance to move into the mythical championship picture against unanimous No. 1 Texas is very foreign ground.

Mark Dantonio shows Mike Gundy how to release press conference rage like a man
Dr. Saturday —
A little background: last week, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio and East Lansing police confirmed rumors that at least one MSU football player was under investigation for putting a Spartan hockey player in the hospital during a brawl following MSU's home loss to Ohio State (not to be confused with the football-on-hockey violence in Ann Arbor the previous week). No reports of arrests or suspensions have followed, though a couple Spartan players mysteriously weren't in uniform against the Wolverines Saturday. Among them were three players the nearby Oakland Press speculated "may have had something to do with an off-campus ...

Week Ten S.E.C. Power Poll Ballot Submitted

At a moment when uncertainty grips Bulldog Nation and I am unsure about my BlogPoll ballot, it is comforting to see how cleanly the Southeastern Conference has delineated itself for purposes of this week’s S.E.C. Power Poll. The list, it seems to me, could not be more clear, so please pardon me for stating the obvious when I break it down as follows:

When we read Lincoln's words "Four score and seven years ago" we know that they were delivered on the battlefield at Gettysburg, in the aftermath of one of the bloodiest battles in the deadliest war in American history. Similarly, when we see clips of Martin Luther King in front of the Lincoln Memorial or see Ronald Reagan saying, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall," we know the context of those speeches. On the contrary, the meaning behind some great historical talks have been long forgotten. What happened, for instance, that led to John F. Kennedy to utter the famous line, "Ich bin ein Berliner?" And, more importantly, what ...

But the Internet's been writing little love letters to the good Cap'n for years now in exchange for an endless stream of Grade A material, and with all-time Web king Mike Gundy coming to town, there couldn't be a better a more fitting game between non-traditional powers -- and very different personalities -- to soak up another cycle of national hype than the YouTube Bowl.
You folks in Muleshoe can ...

Will everyone still be hungover from last Saturday’s madness? Probably not, expect that place to be more insane than Paul Bearer’s face.
With so much attention still being paid to the exciting events from last weekend, which has to be the best game we’ve seen thus far, some are forgetting what a crazy game these two teams played last year. OSU won 49-45 but Graham Harrell threw for 646 yards. Insane. ...

Anger come in layers. When you watch Mike Gundy get mad, there’s obvious hurt underneath the anger; you get the feeling Mike Gundy puts on anger like a dusty formal suit, trotting it out for special occasions like funerals. He gets angry on principle, not because there’s some underlying rage just seething and waiting to explode. When Dennis Green grows angry, there’s obvious frustration and confusion, but no sort of basic low-boil of anger. When Herm Edwards goes nuts…well, he’s obviously ...

Mike Gundy is a man. Aron Ralston is a man. Jimmy Patsos you are no man. Patsos, the head basketball coach at Loyola (Md). Last night, his Greyhounds took on the Davidson Wildcats, falling 78-48. There is no dishonor in losing to a ranked team, but Patsos's antics deserve to be ridiculed. He decided to implement a Triangle-and-two defense. Instead of guarding Davidson's two best scorers he stuck two defenders on Steph Curry for the entire game. Full Court. The result was Curry standing in the corner (almost certainly at the instruction of his coach, Bob McKillop), while his teammates played four on three. With Loyola leading ...
Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy is a Man, Is Worth $15.7 Million
straitpinkie.com —
We are going to talk about this article below. Let me tell you why we are going to talk about it. Mike Gundy is awesome. 100% of the money that he is getting is completely deserving. It embarrasses me he didn’t get this extension as soon as he went off on the media. The university’s athletic department must not have ever had a child who has come home with their heart broken, upset. How are they going to kick a man while he is down? Here is all Mike Gundy did. He was QB at OSU and went to class and graduated. He is respectful to the media and to the public and gets really pissed off when you don’t do the same. He wins football games. Mike Gundy is ...

Slim Pickings: Bowl season just getting warmed up
One Bronco Nation Under God —
Up until Hawaii’s no show and Jimmy Clausen deciding to show why he was once the top rated quarterback in the nation, things were going pretty well for my picks. I’m not prepared to live in a world where a Clausen is good and Notre Dame wins. Hopefully this was a fluke and they’ll slip back into their under performing ways next year. Unfortunately this probably means that Notre Dame will somehow be ranked preseason next year.
Let’s get onto the next batch of bowl games.

Football '08: Closing thoughts
Mizzourah —
It's gonna take a few years before we can really properly put this season and this era of Tiger football into context. Some overweight sports columnists have already deemed the success and records of the last four years a fluke and a product of cupcake scheduling. Only time will tell if that's the case. I really don't think enough evidence exists to determine whether or not the last four years were an aberration or proof that the program has completely turned the corner. ...

Top 10 Press Conference Meltdowns
The Love of Sports —
by John Gorman Love of Sports Correspondent As one of my many goals in life, right up there with sleeping with a Miss [insert any state here] and starring opposite Al Pacino in a buddy comedy, I’d like to give a press conference. I’d like to do this for a couple of reasons, not the least of which being that this will validate my long-standing delusion that anything important I do warrants media coverage. I’d also love to host a press conference, because I’d be totally off the wall. I’d answer questions in the most loopy, unscripted, bizarre fashion imaginable. In other words, I would only attempt to be half as great as the certifiably loony gentlemen who ...

ESPN's front page said something like "too much Tim Tebow and plenty of Percy Harvin..."; you don't need to hear the rest. Everyone knows that the game last night was supposed to crown us a champion. But did it? I, for one, don't think so. As a fan of college football, and therefore a staunch opponent of the BCS, I was cheering for whatever would reflect badly on the system. Before the game that seemed like it would be a low scoring, say 24-14, win for Oklahoma, meaning Texas would have a good argument as the best in the land. However, once the game ended I realized that Texas wasn't the team I should be arguing for, it should be ...

We discussed this over a week ago- Purdue was not on terra firma with Shayon Green, a linebacker prospect out of Georgia. Well, during the weekend, Green made it official as he switched his verbal to Miami. In other recruiting news, Jordan Barnes decided to verbal to Oklahoma State during his visit to Stillwater. That said, his committment sounds less-than-convincing, at least to me. When asked if he committment prior to meeting Purdue's entire staff, Barnes responded "Yeah, I did and then I talked to Purdue and they had me thinking about some things so right now I'm really not sure which way I'm going to go with ...

So, what’s the deal with Ben Roethlisberger? We all know now that he told Peter King that he played in the Super Bowl with two broken ribs, but it wasn’t anywhere to be found on the official injury report in the lead up to the game, and there hasn’t been any independent confirmation that this is true. Would Big Ben lie about broken ribs just to seem like a bigger man? ESPN.COM notes that he has “previously exaggerated or misstated injuries he supposedly suffered during his five-season career.”

"It's interesting since that day, which happened on impulse in my opinion, to protect and take care of one of our players, I didn't have any idea that it would take off like this. From that point on, for good or bad, I've become very recognizable across the country.

As I turn yet more of my limited attention span to college football, it’s time for the annual pre-season look at out-of-conference schedules. Thanks to a continued lack of a playoff in D-I, quality scheduling continues to have much more influence on “who’s ranked where” than it should. And several top ten teams should be full out embarrassed by the slate of pansies on the home sched.
First let me give credit where credit is due. Ohio State and USC obviously deserve mention for scheduling the home-and-home with each other, the back half of that coming this year in Columbus. Oklahoma also gets credit for not ...
