The WBA heavyweight title fight tomorrow in Switzerland has been a punch line this week for most boxing writers. Lyle Fitzsimmons says take a hard look at the fight and the conclusion is that Holyfield actually has a shot to grab a portion of the heavyweight crown against a mediocre fighter in Nikolay Valuev: Oh sure, he's seven-feet tall and, yes, he weighs in somewhere north of 300 pounds, but in terms of actual in-ring prowess he leans far more toward Barnum and Bailey than Ali and Frazier. Let's get straight to the point : Boxing is benefitting from Evander Holyfield; but the sport is hurting "The Real Deal". As shot as the 46-year old Holyfield is, if he wasn't a big name, there wouldn't be all this media attention on the guy. As it is, Evander Holyfield has been featured on ESPN's Outside the Lines. The fact that a minor, albeit title, bout with 7-footer Nikolai Valuev is drawing mainstream coverage is testament to both Holyfield's profile - and the decline of boxing's heavyweight division. I seriously doubt that Valuev would've made more than a blip on ESPN's radar if he were fighting "White Tyson" ...
