O.J. Mayo Likes His Cheddar
Sportaphile — ESPN’s Outside The Lines ran a report on USC’s O.J. Mayo receiving illegal benefits from his first year in highschool all the way up until last year. In the last 4-5 years Mayo has received up to $30,000 in cash and gifts in exchange for a verbal agreement to sign with BDA management when he made it to the NBA. There are two things in this story that crack me up. 1. BDA management actually paid out $200,000 for O.J. Mayo, but most of that money was taken and spent by the middleman, Rodney Guillory. 2. You HAVE to see the look on O.J.’s face when ESPN puts him on the spot questioning these allegations. It ...

Uh-OJ: Did Mayo Put USC in Hot Water?
SportsHubLA — Famous (potentially) last words, courtesy of me, on April 11 when OJ Mayo officially turned pro: In the end, like most things, the reality of OJ was somewhere in between the extremes of those who figured [image] his tenure would lead to the SMUing ...

The Pimping of OJ Mayo
The Big Lead — Can’t really call this a We-Told-You-So moment, because even though the Ronald Guillory-OJ Mayo connection was highly visible in March of 2007, we actually thought the NCAA would catch wind of it, and Mayo wouldn’t play at USC. But dammit if we weren’t close! This weekend, ESPN’s Outside the Lines nailed the story (or had it handed to them): OJ Mayo “received thousands of dollars in cash, clothes and other benefits” during high school and his one season at USC.

Somebody Stands Up For OJ Mayo’s Alleged Pimp
Can't Stop The Bleeding — Yesterday was undoubtedly a rough one for OJ Mayo confidant Rodney Guillory, with ESPN’s Kelly Naqi playing the Mike Wallace to Guillory’s General Westmoreland.  IMG Hoops Academy trainer Dan Barto spent an afternoon with Mayo and Guillory last year, and paints a slightly more sympathetic portrait of the pair. OJ was a pleasure to coach and I took the time to run him into the ground for about an hour and a half.  His skill set has solid with the natural problem that young talented powerful players fight.  Those problems were the ability to change speed, lowering the hips on moves, decelerating to finish, and core ...

Piping in About O.J. Mayo and the Rays
Women Like Sports — Another college athlete and another scandal is upon us. Did O.J. Mayo take gifts when he knew it was wrong? Is the guy who spoke up just bitter? Either way, the interesting take here is that if there was inappropriate gift-giving, USC will be the one to suffer while Mayo goes largely unscathed. The university would forfeit games and titles that were gained during the time Mayo was on the roster and/or face other fines and penalties. Is this the right thing to do if the school was not aware? On the other hand, if the school and player were aware, why is only one party truly punished? This ...

Another Culprit in the Mayo Mess
Rush The Court — In the effluvia of the OJ Mayo report from Outside the Lines (you remember, he took money and gifts from street runner Rodney Guillory, acting as a proxy for the Bill Duffy Agency) the other night, there has been a cacophany of predictable kneejerk reactions from every corner of the media universe.  Tim Floyd and USC are to ...

OJ Mayo Accepted Gifts? Color Me SurprisedTar Heel Fan
Sarcasm is a valid blogging technique. ESPN reported over the weekend the results of an Outside the Lines investigation which showed that USC freshman OJ Mayo received a variety of goodies from an agent middleman called a “runner” during the course of his brief NCAA career in Los Angeles. Mayo naturally has denied the allegations . I am sure Tim Floyd will be along ...

Go On, Take The Money And RunSignal to Noise
There will be plenty more dimensions to the allegations against O.J. Was anyone surprised by Sunday's "Outside the Lines" reports that now former USC basketball star O.J. Mayo allegedly took at least $30,000 in cash and benefits from someone who was attempting to sign the future NBA draft pick as an agent? I didn't think so. Is USC to blame? Of course USC is to blame. The university already knew about Rodney Guillroy, who is accused of supplying Mayo ...
OJ MAYO STORY REINFORCES NEED FOR CHANGECollege Basketball Blog Report
May 12, 2008 ESPN's award winning series, 'Outside the Lines', has broken the story that USC's ballyhooed freshman OJ Mayo was receiving money and gifts before and during his one (and only) season of college basketball. Nobody is shocked. Nobody is surprised. It seems as though nobody is outraged, either. Most people are just turning the page with a yawn... I worked last night and this
