Gus Johnson, Where Art Thou?
Published 3/24/2008 at The Sporting Blog
By Chris Mottram If there was ever a sign that there may not be a god, this was it: Gus Johnson was in Denver over the first two rounds instead of being in Tampa. The fact that he wasn't calling the Western Kentucky-Drake game is a tragedy. Instead, Gus was stuck with mostly snoozers: Oral Roberts-Pitt, Winthrop-Wash State, GMU-ND, Temple-MSU, ND-Wash St. The one competitive/exciting game he called was Pitt-Michigan State, which most of us missed because of UCLA-Texas A Here are the highlights, which lack the typical Gus insanity, but still give us a good "Ha-ha!" along with a "Puuuuurrrre!": On Friday, he'll be calling Davidson-Wisconsin, so here's to ...

Don’t weep for Gus Johnson

Last night, someone (though I can’t remember who, which means this was probably an internal dialogue) mentioned that they thought Gus Johnson had a sub-par first round of the tournament. I disagree. Gus thrives in closing moments of games, and when the most exciting game you broadcast is a businesslike Michigan State win over Pittsburgh, there’s not much of a climax to build to. So, no, Gus didn’t have a bad first round. His games did. Let the criticism die here. Bill Raftery was also impressive. My dream is to some day pair Johnson and Raftery in a fusion of orgasmic ...

Ohio State right choice for Pryor

Pitt was never going to be it despite the fact that Pryor's father would have loved to see him there. That's fine. There's no rule that says a kid has to stay home and play for the hometown team. In Pryor's case, it's probably good that he is getting away, not that Columbus, Ohio, is on the other side of the world. The pressure on him at Pitt would have been extraordinary. He's the most hyped ...
