Congratulations, Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings [NHL Closer]
Deadspin — The NHL Closer is written by five people of European descent at Melt Your Face Off. We're not the first people to blog the Stanley Cup Finals, but Don Cherry still calls us "soft". So, for all you kids out there, Raskolnikov toughened up to recapitulate Detroit's clincher. Game 5's aura hung over Mellon Arena. The Penguins had snatched victory, $6 champagne, and the Stanley Cup away from Detroit. Would this young team continue to shock the hockey world? Or would Detroit hunker down and play the style of hockey that led them to this point? Detroit started the game inauspiciously enough. Petr Sykora attempted to get ...

Cup Finals somewhat marred by officiating and CBC
Waiting For Stanley — I hate to be a party pooper after a Stanley Cup win by Detroit, but I want to get a couple of monkeys off my back. 1. Are these refs paid to call penalties to sway game results? What the hell was up with the hooking obstruction call on Jiri Hudler with less than 2:00 left in the game? That was weak! The refs were letting a lot go up to that point and then pull that call from out of their asses. Sure enough, Pittsburgh scores on the power play to make it 3-2. You could see the Wings reeling after that. Before that call Detroit was in full control. The shots could have been around 12-1 at that point. It wasn't even close. The Pens and their fans ...

Stanley Cup: Mission Accomplished
Intentional Foul — This is how it was supposed to be. Detroit, having not clinched a playoff series at home during their run for the Cup, had to secure their right to raise it by winning in Pittsburgh. With the Red Wings, that’s par for the course. And win, they did. After beating Pittsburgh 3-2 (and almost giving the Pens another shot at life late in the third quarter), the Detroit Red Wings are your NHL Stanley Cup Champions. It was their fourth cup in eleven years and their eleventh overall. Your Conn Smythe Award winner was Henrik Zetterberg, who had 13 goals and 14 assists during Detroit’s run. As pointed out ...

We Eat Children — Previous Post: I Didn’t Get You Any Presents But Here’s A Bunch of Year-End Lists [Listicle] Top 10 Stories That Mattered In 2008 [Listicle] 2008 saw virtually every major sports and some of the minor ones (ie. swimming) hold it down with worthy historical moments. Here is a completely subjective and nonsensical countdown of the top sports moments in 2008. 10. Michael Phelps. Ears. Gold Medals. World Records.  9. What recession? The Yankees spent money like, well, the Yankees, dropping $420 million on three players. According to  Forbes Magazine , 16 of the 30 MLB teams are worth less than what the Yankees paid for Teixeira, Sabathia ...

Preserving History: Lord Stanley's Cup
huggingharoldreynolds.blogspot.com 6/5/2008 — After each major sporting event, HHR takes a look at how it is portrayed in news print in some of the nation's leading dailies.
