Filed under: General NHL, Sabres, Panthers, NHL InjuriesThis is why I write hockey and not crime: Words fail me, at this moment, in describing how absolutely frightening and horrific this moment from today's Florida Panthers/Buffalo Sabres game was, as Panthers forward Richard Zednik was accidentally slashed on the throat by teammate Olli Jokinen's skate, severing his jugular vein, according to the Buffalo News. The Miami Herald has more on the injury, including news that the bleeding has stopped. The look of every ...
Sabres Win, Zednik Injured
Published 2/11/2008 by Kevin at BfloBlog.com
Very rarely does leaving a game early ever leave you with a good feeling. Regardless of the circumstances, you feel like a lesser fan, like someone who deserves a huge comeback to happen just to spite you.
But tonight I had SonTwo (age five) with me for the early start against Florida. And when 8:00 rolled around and it was officially “past bedtime” I knew we had to bolt soon. The Sabres power play goal a few minutes later left me with a convenient excuse to drag him out, and we headed for the escalator. On the way out (more on the disasters there later) we heard the injury on the in-house broadcast, but I wasn’t really ...
Another Scary Skate to the Face Incident
Published 2/11/2008 by Enrico at The700Level.com - Philly Sports & Minutiae
After linesman Pat Dapuzzo suffered a broken jaw and needed 60 stiches after taking a skate to the face yesterday, another horrific skate to the head injury has taken place today. Florida's forward Richard Zednick took a skate to the throat that had blood gushing everywhere.
We all love a good fight in hockey but injuries like these are certainly scary.

Memories of Clint Malarchuk... Zednik slashed in the neck
Published 2/11/2008 by DCScrap at on 205th magazine: Stuff Guys Like. [Pop Culture For Men]
Bringing back haunting memories of Clint Malarchuk almost dying on the ice when he was slashed in the neck by a skate blade, tonight Richard Zednik was accidentally cut by the skate of Olli Jokinen, severing his jugular. The game was delayed for more than 15 minutes as the blood was cleaned off the ice. The good news, as of this posting, is that Zednik is in stable condition at a Buffalo hospital after surgery. This is the second time in less than a week that a participant in an NHL game has sustained a cut from a skate blade as just two days ago linesman Pat Dapuzzo suffered an injury from a skate blade that resulted in a ...
Panthers' Richard Zednik's Neck Slashed By Olli Jokinen's Skate
Published 2/11/2008 at FanIQ Blog
Uhh, that's a lot of blood. Two days in a row we've had a skate go high and inadvertently slash someone's throat/face. What happened tonight was far worse than yesterday's.
Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers took Olli Jokinen's skate right to the neck. Miraculously, Zednik skated immediately to the bench and received assistance very quickly. As you can hear from the broadcast below, he passed out shortly after he left the ice.
Zednik is reportedly in stable condition at a local Buffalo hospital. Yikes. That's not a pretty scene. We hope he continues to stay well. ...
Richard Zednik Injured, but Stable
Published 2/11/2008 by The OFB Team at On Frozen Blog
Former Washington Capital and current Florida Panther Richard Zednik was rushed to the hospital after taking a skate blade to the neck during Florida’s game against Buffalo today.
The injury occurred as Zednik’s teammate Olli Jokinen was checked hard; as he fell, his skate flew up and caught Zednik on the side of the neck. Zednik was able to make his way, shakily, to the bench, when he stumbled into the arms of his Panthers teammates and medical staff.
Panthers defenseman Steve Montador recalled seeing Zednik in a state of shock as he got to the bench.
“He looked pale, he ...

When skating on ice with really sharp blades, its always a danger in the NHL that someone is going to get cut. It rarely happens that someone gets their carotid artery sliced. Here's the video of Richard Zednik getting his throat cut open, hitting that major artery, and the blood that gushed on the ice. The scared look on Zednik's face says it all. (AP Photo/Don Heupel)

OK, so that’s not quite 100% accurate, but it’s not far off. Watch in horror as the Panther’s Richard Zednik takes the accidental savate kick to the neck from his own teammate here.
In all seriousness, he’s lucky to be alive after that. ESPN is reporting he’s in stable condition after having surgery to close the wound, but it seems he’ll be alright.

Ok. I’m a really squeamish kind of person so seeing all this gore shit kinda disgusts me but heres goes nothing.
Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik had to get surgery today after his neck was deeply cut by a teammates skate.
Blood gushed from Zednik’s neck after he was cut about halfway through the third. Very scary moment. As a result the game was delayed for about 15 minutes. The craziest part is that after his neck was sliced. He had the wearwithall to get his ass up and go to the bench. That may have saved his life. Heres the video: ...

I'm not a fan of hockey. In fact, this is probably the one and only hockey post you will ever see on this blog, but I thought I'd share the video of Richard Zednik's horrible injury tonight. I've seen horrible injuries in sports before, but I don't think I've ever seen a video where I came away saying I can't believe he didn't die. Amazing footage, but frightening. Zednik was rushed to a local hospital where surgery was performed, he's in stable condition. ...

You know the old joke, right? "I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out!" I guess after this weekend, we might need to update that joke a bit: "I went to a hockey game, and a GOD DAMNED SLASHER FILM BROKE OUT!!!" Note: All of the videos I'm posting are graphic and bloody to varying degrees (actually, from least to most, coincidentally). The fact that it appears that everyone involved will live to tell the tale is the only reason I'm posting them at all. First, on Saturday night: linesman Pat Dapuzzo took a skate to the face in the Flyers/Rangers game. Dapuzzo wound up needing at least 20 stitches and a possible broken nose. Meanwhile, ...

On Saturday in Philadelphia, linesman Pat Dapuzzo was cut in the face by a player's skate. He was bleeding heavily but still tried to step in and break up part of a brawl that had begun.
Then on Sunday, Richard Zednik's throat was accidentally cut open by a teammate's skate during Sunday's game in Buffalo.
"It is super scary whenever you get contact with an ice skate," said Panthers coach Jacques Martin. "It was a good decision on his part to skate towards the bench. I think that saved some time and our trainers were right there to put pressure on it."

-I ever wish ill on Richard Zednik. In my last post, after he put up two on the Bruins, I asked "Where's Kyle McLaren when you need him," in reference to the time McLaren almost took his head off in the 2003 playoffs. For those who haven't see the clip, last night, Zednik was cut in the throat by a skate in what seemed like a harmless play. He's in stable condition, thank God. Apparently it was a pretty gruesome scene, as this TSN photo of the crowd's reaction shows. Here's the YouTube of the incident, particulary chilling that it happened in Buffalo, where they have some experience with that. When one of the ...

For those of you not old enough to not remember Clint Malarchuk almost bleeding to death on the ice, here's another close call. If you aren't squeamish, about 2:08 into the clip shows what can happen when you slice a carotid artery with a skate. Fortunately, Richard Zednik is fine. When you think of all the close calls, the NHL is actually lucky to only have one on-ice death in its history, and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw number two within a few years. The game has changed and become much faster in the last twenty years, with players shooting the puck at 100 mph, it's only a matter of time before a player takes a slapshot between the eyes and ...

Should the Panthers - Sabres game have been stopped after Zednik's injury?
Published 2/11/2008 by Zanstorm at Waiting For Stanley- A Vancouver Canucks-NHL news site
I think the officials handled the situation properly last night. They delayed the game until an announcement was made that Zednik was in stable condition and on his way to the hospital. Sure, the players may have been shaken up by it and maybe didn't quite feel as competitive afterwards, but accidents happen in hockey. Some are more disturbing or graphic in nature. But the game must go on. Just saying. Good to see the officials make the right call last night. I'm glad Zednik is alright. A major thumbs down to that piece of dog shit reporter who asked Jokinen (who's skate cut Zednik) what he was thinking or how he felt post ...
Richard Zednik’s Neck Injury
Published 2/11/2008 by Chris at Intentional Foul
When you maneuver around a playing field on miniature katanas, there is an inherent risk of getting cut by the very blades that propel you. Such was the case with Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik during last night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres. In the third period, Zednik was caught in the neck by the skate of teammate Olli Jokinen, when Jokinen was up-ended behind the Sabres’ goal.
As he was being knocked over, Jokinen’s right leg went parallel to the ground and his skate hit Zednik in the throat, slashing it open. Fortunately for Zednik, who is resting peacefully at the Buffalo General ...
Not A Pretty Sight

Sunday night's game between the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres got pretty ugly in the third period. And no it wasn't just ugly because it was in Buffalo. For those who've been to that city, you know what I'm talking about. The actual reason why is because with the Sabres up 4-3 midway through the third, Olli Jokinen was being checked in the Sabres' zone, then fell forward and his skate accidentally flew up and caught the right side of his team mate Richard Zednik's neck. Zednik bled profusely from the cut but was able to skate toward his bench where he was met by the trainer and immediately ushered to the locker ...

Scary Richard Zednik Injury

I’m definitely not a big hockey fan but this was bigger than the sport. #20 of the Buffalo Sabres, Richard Zednik gets sliced in the neck by a skate blade of his teammate in last night’s game against the Panthers. The players was up-ended and his leg went flailing in the air. There was a trail of blood and he was rushed to the hospital immediately. The game was delayed more than 15 minutes as they cleaned up the blood.
He is currently in stable condition and is responsive. He underwent what they called “life-saving” surgery last night. This easily could’ve been fatal. Neck guards have been recommended but ...

It was a pretty scary incident last night in Buffalo. The city was once again subject to an on-ice near-death situation due to a skate blade cutting a player's neck. First it was Clint Malarchuk, and yesterday it was Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik. For the squeamish, don't watch this video because there is plenty of blood. According to reports, Zednik lost 5 of his 8 units of blood on the ice. There was so much blood on the ice, that Buffalo was forced to bring out the Zamboni to clean it up. There was question about whether the game would go on, but ...

Enough is enough! In light of recent events, I am of the opinion that we need to rethink the safety in one of our major sports. In the last week alone we've had two horrible accidents that could have easily been avoided with a slight rule change: We need to ban ice skates from ice hockey. They're just plain dangerous. Many will argue that outlawing skates in hockey will hurt the sport. It will become less "pure." Hey, I bet people thought the same thing about face masks in football or batting helmets in baseball. Sometimes you have to adapt with the safety of your players in mind. Seriously, how great a sport ...
