Sosa to the Rescue for Louisville
The March to Madness —
Edgar Sosa of Louisville sends Kentucky home a loser with a three-point basket in the closing seconds of the Cardinals' 74-71 victory.
Edgar Sosa Sends Kentucky Home
Intentional Foul —
I don’t really care if this comes across as being a sore loser, so here goes: I guess every dog does get their day. Just ask the pedestrian Edgar Sosa and his “hey, look what I just pulled out of my ass” game-winning three-point basket against rival Kentucky yesterday. The basket gave the Cardinals an evidently much-needed victory, judging by the accolades being piled on Sosa. Um, where was the love before yesterday’s game, Cardinal fans?
I guess it’s hard to have a lot of love for a guard who, before yesterday’s surprising turn ...
Never Too Early to Talk No. 1 Seeds
The Big Lead —
With apologies to the smurfs at Baylor and Sherron Collins of Kansas … the two best Big 12 teams play tonight in Norman: Texas and Oklahoma. It’s something of a down year for the league - both of these teams lost to a middle-of-the-pack SEC team, Arkansas - but one of these two seems certain to earn a No. 1 seed in March (along with Michigan State, Pitt or Connecticut, and Wake or UNC or Duke).
To us, Oklahoma is like Kansas State last year - one tremendous player, and a bunch of role players (albeit slightly better ones) who can either shoot you into or out of a game. The defense leaves something to be desired, ...
Ask a Fourth Grader: Kentucky vs. Louisville Rivalry
ESPNtheMag.com - MagDaily —
As part of our Fan Issue (we're releasing content all week—check dis), Neil Janowitz headed down to Kentucky in an effort to get a bunch of fourth graders to weigh in on the Kentucky vs. Louisville rivalry as part of the "Ask a Fourth Grader" series (here's another example). Janowitz made his pilgrimage to Bluegrass the day after this game, where Edgar Sosa lived up to his Gus Johnson-inspired nickname, "El Tigre." Things were, understandably, heated in this classroom. Check it out. (All ten Fan Issue videos drop Friday.)
Does it Get Better Than a Top-Five Big East Matchup?
College Hoops Journal —
The last time the No. 1 team in the country flew into Louisville, it walked back on to the plane with a loss. That would be Pittsburgh.
Tonight, soon-to-be-No.1 UConn looks to give Louisville its first loss in the Big East. A win for the Huskies would leave Marquette alone at the top of the conference.
So the argument will be hashed out until the game goes final: Should UConn be the No. 1 team in the country when it’s behind Louisville in the Big East? There isn’t a team playing hotter than the Cardinals, who have been riding high since Edgar Sosa stabbed Kentucky in the heart with a 3-pointer at the buzzer in ...

RTC 09-10 Class Schedule: Kentucky Wildcats
Rush The Court —
Just a mere five months ago, the once proud and feared Kentucky basketball program was mired in a state of chaos. The Billy Gillispie era at the university turned out about as well as the Harriet Miers Supreme Court nomination. Mystifying losses at storied Rupp Arena to such powers as Gardner-Webb and VMI, puzzling interviews with ESPN’s Jeannine Edwards making the blog rounds and exposing Gillispie as a clown, point guards refusing to enter games, rumors of bar scenes of an inebriated Gillispie making a mockery of his reputation and, worse of all, the Wildcats missing the NCAA ...
Louisville's Edgar Sosa, from cast-out to captain
The Dagger —
Hey, who remembers this?
That was Edgar Sosa's finest moment as a Louisville Cardinal in
2008-09, and probably his finest overall. It gave Louisville a
hard-fought win at home over rival Kentucky, a loss that would have
been a disaster in retrospect, given the two teams' divergent paths
late in the season. (Louisville went on to the win the Big East;
Kentucky ended up chasing its coach out of town.)
Sosa's shot was also important because it marked the full re-emergence
of the point guard into Rick Pitino's trusted circle. For a while
there, Pitino considered shipping Sosa off to a school that "didn't play any defense." ...
RTC 2009-10 Top 65 Games: January
Rush The Court —
Last Monday we broke down the top games of November and December as part of our season preview here at Rush the Court. As we examine the best games of the month of January, keep in mind what games during this crucial portion of the season usually represent: separating the contenders from the pretenders. With conference play heating up, the true top-seed players emerge from the pack and leap up their conference standings, while teams that may have overachieved or floated along on a cupcake-filled slate during the first two months begin to fall apart. Here are the games of great importance to circle on your calendar for January:

The best Louisville game of the decade tournament: 7 vs. 10
Card Chronicle —
This is my favorite matchup of the first round and I'm very interested to see how it plays out.
7. LOUISVILLE STUNS TENNESSEE IN THE FINAL MINUTE AT THE HALL (12/20/01)
Just about everyone I've talked to who attended this game claims it was the loudest they've every heard Freedom Hall. There are also countless stories of high-fives and hugs with nearby strangers.
Neither team would end up making the NCAA Tournament, but this game was special for a number of reasons.
1) It was Pitino's first year.
2) This team was sorely lacking in talent but was already overachieving and playing with more energy than the fans had seen in ...
