Dear Lord Therrien, re: Colby Armstrong
Published 11/7/2007 by Teka at Talk Hockey To Me
I know today is supposed to be Hockey Youtube Madness day, but let me bend your ear for a moment, Oh Somewhat Exalted Lord Therrien. What the heck, dude? I know, I know, you're trying to shuffle the lines to figure out who works best together, but don't you think that you should be saving the severe musical chairs for practices? And really, could you not take it out on poor Colby Armstrong, who's been a scratch for three games straight and isn't going to get any better if you keep him off the ice? After all, compare last year's Army to what you've seen of him this year. Last year he couldn't have told you where anyone else was on the ice if ...

Koivu and Ohlund
Published 11/21/2007 by Mike at Shaved Ice Hockey Blog
You've probably heard about this story already- it's been around the hockey media pretty quickly. Just watch the video: So Ohlund gets a 4-game suspension. FOUR GAMES. I'm not exactly sure how far Colin Campbell's head is up his ass, but I bet his breath smells like shit. I guess I thought the NHL was interested in cracking down on some of the extraneous dirty stuff in the league. We see Steve Downie get a 20-game suspension, and Jesse Boulerice get 25. Then this, which makes absolutely no sense. Let's give Ohlund the benefit of the doubt. Koivu got his elbow ...

Hartnell hits Alberts, who is on his knees at the time. Result: 2 game suspension and a league wide discussion over what the hell the coaching staff in Philly is feeding these guys.
Jones hits Patrice Bergeron from behind. Enough said. Result: Bergeron is out indefinitely. Jones received a 2 game suspension.
Boulerice cross-checks Kesler in the face. Result: Bruised chops and 25 game suspension of Boulerice matching the longest penalty ever assesed in the NHL. ...

This is pretty much train of thought as I am watching the game. Not really a live blog but it is essentially my rants and reactions in order of events. *I hate watching games on TV rather than being there. It really is a huge change from how it used to be, when I loved, LOVED sitting at home and listening to Sam and J.D. call the shots on MSG. Joe opened the broadcast by saying that Paul Mara was playing really well for the Islanders before getting hurt and it just went downhill from there. *Beautiful start for Malik in his return - a horrible pass back to Rozy right off the opening faceoff. M! A! L-I-K! MALIK YOU SUCK! *And a ...
Flyers’ Death Wish - Downie Called Up
Published 12/5/2007 by Matt Grochowski at Clarke's Boys
A day after the NHL repremanded the Flyers organization for their fifth player suspended this season, forward Steve Downie was called up from the Phantoms. Ironically, last week, GM Paul Holmgren stated that Downie wasn’t ready for the promotion.
The troubled Downie is fresh off of his 20-game suspension for a preseason cross-check to Ottawa’s Dean McAmmond. The 2005 first round pick has had his issues of anger on the ice. A fight with a teammate forced a trade to another junior league team - now he’ll be wearing the Orange&Black. Day one of this experiment will take place in Minnesota on Wednesday night. ...
Downie Recalled Again, Set to Play This Weekend
Published 1/3/2008 by Matt P at The700Level.com - Philly Sports & Minutiae
Tim Panaccio reports that the Flyers have recalled talented but troubled winger Steve Downie, who should play this weekend against the Devils and Maple Leafs. Usually we don't reserve billing for the Flyers call-ups, but we're in the middle of four days without hockey, and Downie has a special place in our hearts after being issued a 20-game suspension for the hit below, which to us, is just part of the game we grew up loving. The game has changed, however, and now it's time to see if Downie has. With 114 PIM in 21 games with the Phantoms, including at least one game misconduct that landed him a sit-down with Paul Holmgren (who was at the game), it'd ...
Downie's sucker punch on Blake under investigation / UPDATE: No suspension
Published 1/7/2008 by Zanstorm at Waiting For Stanley
Steve Downie apparently isn't going to have a long stay in the NHL at this rate. In only his 4th game back since serving a lengthy suspension for his illegal hit on Dean McAmmond, Downie sucker-punched Toronto's Jason Blake while Blake was tied up by the refs during Saturday night's game. If you have not seen the footage of it yet, check it out here. Hey, I love violence in hockey, make no mistake. But this kind of thing just isn't right. Blake's arms were clearly tied up by the referee and any potential fight was not going to happen. So Downie had no right to sucker punch Blake when he was that vulnerable. Today ...
Clarke’s defense of Downie classless

Nothing like Bobby Clarke using a little shock factor to keep himself in the public eye. Something tells me he misses the attention. Clarke's to-the-point comments on TSN's Off The Record Wednesday night suggests that he still wears his Philadelphia Flyers' heart on his sleeve. As Booby - and no, that is not a typo - would have you believe, both Jason Blake and Dean McAmmond are to blame for being on the receiving end of a pair of Steve Downie cheap shots in recent weeks. "When he went after Blake, I loved it," Clarke told TSN. "The kid did what every hockey player should ...

Some of you may remember our utterly hilarious chat with the Devil fans over at 2 Man Advantage a while back. That seemed to work out pretty well, so to get the perspective of the fans of another one of the Rangers’ division rivals, and in advance of today’s game in Philadelphia, we reached out to the guys at The 700 Level. Like us, they seem to remember that this whole fandom thing shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
We threw them a few questions about the Flyers, they responded in kind about the Rangers, and in between some mutual ball-busting, we managed to squeeze in some substantive discussion. Here ...
The Re-Debut of Prospal, and Memories of McAmmond
Published 2/29/2008 by Matt P at The700Level.com - Philly Sports & Minutiae
Recently re-acquired forward Vaclav "Vinny" Prospal will play his first game in a Flyers sweater since being traded away seemingly an eternity ago. I don't think we can expect him to keep up the enormous numbers he was producing while on a line with Marty St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier, but considering the Flyers were running defensemen as forwards not long ago, he's a huge addition to their scoring ability. It's looking like John Stevens will run a line of Prospal, Briere, and Umberger, which hopefully will prove to be a productive mix for Briere.
Antero Niittymaki will face Ray Emery of the Senators, who have been in a tailspin ...
Penalizing Based On Prestige

The great band Thin Lizzy released a classic song called "Bad Reputation" back in the '70s that is quite relevant to the current situation in the NHL - the lyrics are below, and music video here. You got a bad reputation That's the word out on the town It gives a certain fascination But it can only bring you down You better turn yourself around Turn yourself around Turn it upside down Turn yourself around You had bad breaks well that's tough luck You play too hard too much rough stuff You're too sly so cold That bad reputation has made you old Turn yourself ...
