My Gobble Hurts
Published 7/23/2008 by Craig Brown at Royals Authority
Wow. Turns out our favorite left handed arsonist has back pain and tight hamstrings and is now on the DL. Shocking.
A question: Apparently, Trey Hillman and the medical staff had no idea about this because Gobble kept it to himself. But if his back and legs were bothering him (since the Tampa series according to Gobble) how could someone not have noticed? It just seems strange he could stretch, run, throw in the bullpen and appear in games with a bad back and not at least raise an eyebrow or twenty.
In a related note, my back feels fine so I thought I’d try some different things tonight. First, consider this ...
Tony Pena Jr. Pitching Video - Royals New Pitcher?
Published 7/23/2008 by Stephen Kersey at Knuckle Curve - Baseball News
With the Kansas City Royals getting massacred by the Detroit Tigers, the Royals decided to go with Tony Pena, Jr. at pitcher. What made it unique? Pena is a position player. It had been more than ten years since the Royals used a position player at pitcher.
And to top it off, Pena didn’t disappoint. He was actually the best pitcher on the night for the Royals. His 1-2-3 inning featured a strikeout of future Hall of Famer Pudge Rodriguez. Pena, who pitched when he was younger, featured a fastball that topped at in the low 90’s and a nice off-speed pitch. If Pena, who is currently hitting .152 on the season, ...

Remember when John Kruk, Steve Phillips, and Harold Reynolds used to do Baseball Tonight together? Those were halcyon days for FJM. It was a more innocent time: gas cost 20 cents a gallon, the iPhone was a wild, unsubstantiated idea I had in my head, and women didn't yet have the right to vote. ...

I'm not a specialist in mechanics by any means, but Tony Pena Jr. looked pretty comfortable on the mound, especially after he got that first out of the way. His curve doesn't have too much of a hook to it yet, but I assume that if he ever does decide to convert, that's something he'd work on. His fastball looks pretty solid though, lots of late life, including heavy sinking action. His sidearm-ish delivery is something that will give righties a lot of trouble as well. Most importantly, Pena looked like he was having fun on the mound. He seemed nervous at first, and in the first ...
Tony Pena Jr Should Switch Positions
Published 7/23/2008 by Carlo Rossi at Get Boofed
Seriously, the dude has a -1 OPS+ through 184 at bats this season. As evidenced below, he has the ability to throw 90+ with some late break. Couldn’t he find more employment opportunities as a reliever?
The sad thing is, this is probably the highlight of the season for the Royals. ...
What A Pleasant Surprise

A couple days ago the Royals were losing to the Tigers 19-4 in the ninth inning... and then something magical happened. KC brought Tony Pena Jr. in to pitch. That's shortstop Tony Pena Jr. Here we go: He touched 91 with the fastball, and struck Ivan Rodriguez out looking with a curveball. He had a low arm angle that's though on righties, and threw strikes. 1 IP, no baserunners. Now normally this would just be your typical blowout sideshow, but considering the way Pena "hits" (152 / 174 / 201, which isn't much better than the average NL pitcher at 140 / 181 / 177) a move to the mound - even as a situational righty out of the pen - may be ...
Favorite sports memories
Published 7/24/2008 by Minda at Ladies...
Twice this week, I’ve seen things at baseball games that may end up being some of my favorite sports memories, ever. One was nothing historically significant; just a really well-pitched minor league game that ended with a walkoff home run. The other probably also holds no huge, big-picture significance, but it was good ...
