Digital Headbutt Utah definitely took that guarantee too seriously. The guarantee was made in front of University of Wyoming students. Do you really expect him to not promise victory for his most rabid fans?
The one-finger isn't excusable; however, neither was Utah's post-game reaction, or onside kickng in the third quarter, when in absolutely no danger of losing.
-
Digital Headbutt Actually, I take that last part back. If I were a coach, and my opponent took an onside kick up 43-0, I might flip them too.

hero to most Utah, apparently under the impression that Joe Glenn was the first person in the history of sports to guarantee a win. Next year in Laramie will be off the hook.
-
ampbyu Whittingham better hope and pray he's not the coach at Utah next year. You don't mess around with Wyoming fans. -
milsecools How did Utah "take it too far?" It just seems like it because they won 50 - 0. They didn't trash their locker room or key their cars. It's football. One coach makes a guarantee. The other team hears about it and plays harder. It's that simple.
The onsides kick was completely legitimate. Odd, but legitimate. Just as legitimate as throwing a pass or running the ball up 43 - 0. (It was the third quarter. It wasn't like he was throwing a touchdown pass with less than 25 seconds on the clock.) The way I see it, you can forfeit whenever you want. But as long as you're going to keep trying to score, so are we.
-
hero to most Yes! Teams are always attempting onside kicks when they're up by 43 points. Happens all the time.
Whittingham admits in the video that the kick was all about the guarantee, and who can blame him? Where does Glenn get off showing confidence before a game with UTAH?
-
milsecools He didn't 'admit the kick was all about the guarantee' he said 'coach glenn made a guarantee and so he must have known something that I didn't about the outcome of the game....[it's] still the third quarter. and i don't believe you ever call the dogs off in the third quarter."
All I'm saying is, coaches don't get in trouble for tying to score leading 43 - 0 in the third. In that respect, an onsides kick is just another play. I already said it was odd, but that doesn't make it 'classless.' Just think about it. The only reason coaches don't do onsides kicks in the third quarter isn't because it's classless, it's because it's usually not worth the risk. No different than a fake fieldgoal or punt. To me, it's just another trick play used at a time when it was completely unexpected.
On another note: I think Whittingham's getting a lot of flack because he just seems pissed about the guarantee in this video, but I think he's really just pissed because he was getting a bunch of flack for such a stupid and petty thing. I know it's not a big deal that glenn made a guarantee to his school, so why is it such a big deal that Utah responded with a chilling victory?
-
hero to most A literal interpretation of that transcribed quote would suggest that Coach Whittingham is incredibly paranoid, or at least has a few screws loose.
The real message: "I called for an onside kick to shove that guarantee up his badonkadonk."

Frank Coffey We perpetrate parody for a living at eTrueSports.com, but it's hard to top the real thing on this one. So we just piled on:
"I'm Glad I Gave Them The Finger"
Wyoming Cowboy head football coach Joe Glenn has resigned to pursue a career as a professional satirist/performance artist. During a game over the weekend Green caused a furor when he gave Utah head coach, Kyle Whittingham “the finger” after Whittingham, with the Utes leading 43-0, called for an onside kick (which was successful).
Wyoming's Glenn Flips Off Whittingham
The Wiz of Odds —
Joe Glenn, who guaranteed earlier in the week his team would beat Utah, was caught on camera offering an impolite salute to Kyle Whittingham after the Utah coach tried an onside kick with a 43-point lead in the third quarter.

Yup, the shit is hitting the fan. This game won't be forgotten (for both sides, probably).
Joe Glenn-Kyle Whittingham Fued, Ohio State Headline Sportsmanship Saturday
FanIQ Blog —
A team resorting to fighting after a tough loss is lame, but coaches jabbing at each other from across the field isn't. Quite the day in sportsmanship Saturday with Joe Glenn-Kyle Whittingham and Ohio State-Illinois leading the way.
As I'm catching up on the Saturday that was in college football this Utah-Wyoming game offered one of many highlights. Wyoming coach Joe Glenn guaranteed a victory against Utah earlier in the week. What happened? A 50-0 pasting by the Utes. If you're going to make that kind of statement, at least score a point. But it was how the Utes got to 50-points that created ...
So Much for the Wyoming Connection
Hi-Plains Drifter —
You can probably scratch Joe Glenn's name from the list of potential head coaching candidates at Nebraska. Following an on-side kick by Utah in the third quarter, a game in which the Utes were up 43-0, the Wyoming coach flipped off Kyle Whittingham ...

Classless Acts of 2007
The Wiz of Odds —
If you thought a Classless Act was any type of behavior that could be considered degrading to the game, well, your right. We're back again with Classless Acts of the 2007 season. None of the Rich Rodriguez-West Virginia content is included because that situation has spilled well into 2008 and will be considered next year. There are several strong candidates and once again, we've opened this to voting. You get only one vote, so choose carefully. Here we go: 1. Texas A&M and Dennis Franchione: There was a lot that went down in College State so we decided to group it together. As a ...
A Comprehensive List of The Worst Guarantees In Sports
FanIQ Blog —
Heading into this Super Bowl, we've heard a lot of guarantees by a lot of people in a lot of different forms. There's Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, who said flat out that the Giants will win. There's Plaxico Burress who said the Giants will win 23-17. And there's Michael Strahan agreeing with him. On the flip side, while the Patriots have kept their mouths shut, their fans sure as hell haven't. Their fans were selling 19-0 t-shirts (site is still up, but no longer selling tees) and the Boston Globe even has a book on Amazon ready to go entitled "19-0: The Historic Championship Season of New England's Unbeatable ...
