Game 2: Wings 3, Penguins 0
On the Wings — The Detroit Red Wings took a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals with their second straight shutout win over Pittsburgh last night at Joe Louis Arena. I missed the first period because I was on the road. I was, however, able to listen to about half of it on the radio (after going through AM about five times and then all the way to the end of FM before finding it on the last FM station). From what I heard, the Wings had a dominant first. The fact that the Penguins didn’t have a single shot until over eight minutes into the game is incredible. When I heard the call of the Wings’ second goal, it sounded like it was Henrik ...

Thoughts on Game #2: Wings 3, Pens 0
Behind the Jersey — What a game! The Wings are up 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals and it feels amazing to be able to say that. Now the Wings still have two more wins to earn and they are heading to Pittsburgh where the fans at Mellon Arena hope to make it difficult for Detroit. If Detroit can get one of the two games there, I would consider the road trip quite a success. But Game #3 isn’t until tomorrow so let’s take a look back at what happened last night at Joe Louis Arena in the 3-0 Detroit victory. Impressive. I’m not sure how else to describe Valtteri Filppula’s amazing goal in the third period. Take a look in the clip ...

Valtteri Filppula Game 2 Goal Video
NHL Digest — Just in case you missed Valtteri Filppula’s amazing goal in Game 2 of these Stanley Cup Finals, I have provided the video below. One of the reasons that Detroit is so dominant and continues to be a force to rekon with year after year is their ability to get timely scoring from their secondary stars like Filppula.  While superstars like Datsyuk, Lidstrom and Zetterberg garner most of the attention and praise, Detroit’s deep bench continues to quietly churn out goal after goal.  Often, these goals come in key situations and have frequently been game winning goals.  For instance, Kris Draper managed to score the first goal in a ...

Pittsburgh's Darryl Sydor in for Kris Letang
FanHouse — Filed under: General NHL, Penguins, Wings, Stanley CupDave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that veteran Pittsburgh defenseman Darryl Sydor will make his first post-season appearance in tonight's Stanley Cup Final Game 3 against the Detroit Red Wings. The move comes at the expense of rookie Kris Letang. The 36-year-old defenseman appeared in 74 games for the Penguins this past season, posting 13 points in the process. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, he spent most of his time on the ice with Ryan Whitney. He has played 151 playoff games ...

Bobble the Vote!
NO PUN INTENDED — The Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's AHL affiliate, announced their promotional schedule recently - most of the promos were the standard hockey cards, dollar beer nights, team posters and the like, but it was the picture at the top of the page that really caught my eye: This is the sort of thing that makes me wish I still lived out on the west side of the state, where I used to catch Griffins games all the time. For those, like me, curious about just what is going on here, the blurb about this particular promo is as following: "The Griffins’ early-season promotional schedule will be highlighted by ...
