Was the Spurs' third quarter flopfest legit? (video)
Were these offensive fouls legitimate, or did All-Defensive First Teamer's Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan *sell* the calls to the referees?

That was floptastic even by San Antonio's standards.  But that didn't stop Breen & Jackson from swallowing it hook, line, and sinker as well.

I know popovich wants a committee set up to review bad trades like the gasol trade. How about a committee to review the leagues most regular flopping teams?

     Such B.S.

I'd be down for something like that...and I know Jeff Van Gundy would be as well. =)

I thought the first one was legit, only because Paul cleared out with his off-hand. And if you go by the rules you can't extend an arm bar while driving and he clearly did on the second one. That said, Bowen's over-acting on the push off was so over the top that it only deepend my distain for the Spurs. But the third was ridiculous. It's sad that great players like Duncan and Ginoblili have to resort to these Duke-like tactics to get wins.

The key here is to make a rule that if the ref thinks its a flop they get a foul called on them, or something of the sort, because it is getting kind of ridicolous to see this happening.

I absolutely agree. They finally did it in soccer but it took forever, so I'm not sure it'll be coming to the NBA for a while. I've always thought that flopping like the kids at Duke are taught to do (and yes, they are taught to do it) should be 2 shots and the ball. Because they clearly just avoid playing defense to try and pick up a cheap foul.

To be fair, I'm singling Duke out because they're the most obvious and famous case, but tons of teams do it.

The problem is, the refs have a hard time identifying the flopping--evidenced by the fact that it's generally successful.

I'd like to see the league review tapes after the fact and impose penalties ... fines, suspensions, whatever.  It woldn't fix  the past, but it could make the Ginobilis and Fishers of the world think twice about the next time.

The Bowen ones looked like legit fouls on Paul, at least to me... and I hate the Spurs. Bowen did what plenty of players do when they feel contact: he exagerrated it to make sure he got the benefit of the whistle.

Flipping the argument on its head for a moment, would Tony Parker have been called for the same foul if he pushed-off Peja Stojakovic on a fast break? I suspect not, at least not in the SBC Center. Homecourt advantage indeed.

That last one is atrocious, though. Tim Duncan is the best center of our generation. He doesn't need to resort to that.

NBA Playoff Triple Threat: On To Game 7
FanIQ Blog — Every day during the NBA playoffs, the Triple Threat will break down the latest action as we get closer to awarding the Larry O'Brien Trophy. San Antonio 99, New Orleans 80 Another home win, again by double digits, just like every game in this series. The Spurs extended their season, but still must win on the road in Game 7 in order to keep it going. San Antonio started hot, taking a 12 point lead after the first and keep it into halftime. Unlike other this game this series and year, the Spurs kept it going in the third quarter, giving up just 12 points to put it out of reach. Adding injury to insult for the ...

Cheap Shot Rob Strikes. Again . [Nba Closer]
Deadspin — The NBA Closer is written by Matt McHale, who's going to just start flopping, hacking and thugging people from behind in his pickup league. If anybody says anything, he can just tell them that he's playing "championship basketball." When he's not figuring out new ways to sweep the leg, he can be found working on his shiv at Basketbawful. Enjoy! They are who we thought they were. Faced with a must-win situation at home, the San Antonio Spurs did what they always seem to do: They used flawless execution, ruthless efficiency, and a third quarter flopstravaganza to turn a close game into a ...

Worst of the Night: May 15, 2008
Basketbawful — Robert Horry: The more things change, the more they don't. Around this time last year, Cheap Shot Rob thugged Steve Nash and set off a chain of events that will haunt the Phoenix Suns franchise forever. Now, did Horry know that Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw were going to jump off the Suns bench to see what happened to their fallen teammate? Of course not. But Horry did know that he was delivering a much-harder-than-necessary foul after the outcome of the game had already been decided. The only point of taking Nash out at that moment was, well, taking Nash out. It was ...

Hornets/Spurs: Spurs flopfest is one way to win game 6
Hail Mary Jane — So before game 6, Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich was already talking about game 7. What happened to taking it one game at a time? I don’t know if this was a strategy of the Spurs going into this game or not but during the 3rd quarter the whole team took a page out of the page of Manu Ginobili by flopping at every opportunity. Manu probably said, “If they touch you, fly 10 feet.” Pop probably cosigned and then the flopfest was on. That was floptastic even by San Antonio’s ...

San Antonio Spurs 3rd Quarter Flopping Spree
FanIQ Blog — Something has been missing this postseason. It's been wildly entertaining, but I've missed that Spurs game at home where they get every call (some, rightfully) and it raised your San Antonio hate level to red. This happened last night, particularly during the 3rd quarter. In Game 5, New Orleans won the game with a big offensive run, fueled by great defense and some highlight dunks to get the crowd on their feet. Last night, the Spurs took over the game with a series of flops that NBA officials always buy at home. This video was posted below, but wanted to get my two cents in. ...

Horry knew damn well that West was playing with an injured back, and seized the opportunity to give him a hard knock. What's an offensive foul for a bench player compared to an All-Star on the opposition possibly missing game seven due to injury? That’s some cheap-ass basketball from a team that’s supposedly close to being labelled a dynasty. Boooo Spurs. Thanks to Ballhype for the video.
