Cal’s Jahvid Best Injured on Touchdown Leap
You Been Blinded - Now in Dazzling HD —
Cal’s outstanding running back Jahvid Best was injured Saturday after he leapt into the end zone to score a touchdown and landed on his head and back. Best flipped over Oregon State safety Cameron Collins before crashing to the ground. Medical staff moved Best from the field by cart and he was taken to a hospital for observation. Jahvid was suffering from a mild-concussion before the game but as you can see in the video that’s the least of his concerns now. ...

Dr. Saturday —
By any measure, California had a dreadful night against Oregon State -- the Beavers quickly led 14-0 and ultimately outgained Cal by 200 yards for the game to stick the Bears with their third lopsided conference loss in six games. But none of the losses were worse than the spectacular and spectacularly painful exit of star running back Jahvid Best, who momentarily defied the laws of gravity and paid a very hard price on the Bears' only relevant score of the game:
Best remained on the ground for an uncomfortably long time, ultimately being carted away on a stretcher ...

Deadspin —
Someone recently wrote (I can't for the life of me remember who) that there's nothing quite like the sound of an entire stadium sure they just watched someone die. When best, the Golden Bears' star back, vaulted over Cameron Collins into the end zone, he guaranteed himself a place on highlight reels. And when he tumbled midair, coming down on his shoulder and neck, he pretty much guaranteed I will never even let my children play football. Scarier still were Best's limbs going stiff, as an analyst explained that "abnormal posturing" is a sign the brain has lost contact with the body. That's a phrase you never want to hear on an injury ...

Part I available here.
Michael Oriard, a former Chiefs offensive lineman, wrote a piece for Deadspin illustrating the tremendous physical toll playing football has on its participants.
But what has really jolted me is the less sensational, more mundane research by Kevin Guskiewicz of the University of North Carolina's sports concussion research program. For those who haven't yet read about it, Guskiewicz and his team fitted sensors in the helmets of UNC players through which they could measure the impact (or g-force) of every blow to the head. The magnitude ranges from small to more than 100 g's, the ...
The SEC gets what it wants - Florida vs. Alabama
Stiles Points - "So let it be written, so let it be done" —
1. Florida (9-0) - the Gators and Tide will be going at it for the SEC title once again... 2. Texas (9-0) - Longhorns can only beat themselves...they are headed to Pasadena... 3. Alabama (9-0) - Tide survives with controversial call... 4. Cincinnati (9-0) - some teams don't have 1 good QB, the Bearcats have 2... 5. Boise State (9-0) - it got a little dicey, the Blue Carpet Boys beat La Tech 6. TCU (9-0) - TCU gets Utah at home this week...the same team that ruined their chance at the Sugar Bowl last year... 7. Georgia Tech (9-1) - Tech survives...no one is talking about them... 8. Pitt (8-1) - Panthers go prime time this ...
