US Defeats Mexico to win 2007 Gold Cup
Published 6/24/2007 by Bob at USA World Cup Team Blog
The latest installment of CONCACAF s biggest rivalry saw the United States defeat 2-1 in the Gold Cup final in Chicago. It was Mexico that struck blood first thanks to a goal by Jose Andres Guardado in the 44th minute. It was the first time in 797 minutes on US soil that Mexico scored. The US got the equalizer in the 62nd minute when Landon Donovan converted a penalty after Brian Ching was knocked down in the box. The goal was Donovan s 34th in a US uniform, tying him with Eric Wynalda for the country s all-time lead. It was a player who rarely hits the net for the US who scored the game winner, however. Benny Feilhaber delivered a huge volley (Update: video below) into the top corner in the 72nd minute to help to the US win its second consecutive Gold Cup and its fourth overall. The US has won nine of its past 12 matches against Mexico. The win also improves the States record under coach Bob Bradley to 10-0-1 since he took over for Bruce Arena. That record surely will have some ...

USA beat Mexico 2-1 to lift CONCACAF Gold Cup
Published 6/25/2007 by Rob Parker at Who Ate All The Pies
USA won the CONCACAF Gold Cup by defeating Mexico 2-1 yesterday. Mexico took the lead through Andres Guardado on the stroke of half-time before Landon Donovan equalised from the penalty spot on 62 minutes. The stunning volley from Brazilian-born midfielder Benny Feilhaber shown in the video below settled the tournament. USA have now won the Gold Cup four times. Both Gold Cup finalists will now take part in the Copa America tournament in Venezuela as invited guests.

Transfer Tip: Benny Feilhaber
Published 6/26/2007 at The Soccer Weblog
Benny Feilhaber scored this winner for USA in the Gold Cup final vs Mexico (which was a great game by the way, like England vs Scotland only with pace and skill.) The 22 year old Brazilian born but California raised center mid currently plays for Hamburg in the Bundesliga, except he mostly doesn ' t play for Hamburg in the Bundesliga and could probably be snapped up if someone makes them a decent offer. I venture he ' d be a great purchase for any lower level Premiership team (more Americans for Fulham and Reading) and an absolute legend for any Championship club. And if anyone needs any more convincing, Feilhaber will be representing the US again on Thursday, when an understrength team wanders into the Copa America and hopes not to get their asses handed to them by Argentina.
Stylewatch: Jerseys to Buy 6-28-07

Kevin’s Jersey to Buy: Erik Bedard. Bedard is quietly leading Major League Baseball in strikeouts. If the guy wasn’t trapped in Baltimore the country would probably know more about him. His 3.36 ERA isn’t incredibly impressive in itself but in his last ten starts his ERA has been hovering around 2. The guy is good, and should continue to be a strikeout machine.
Rich’s Jersey to Buy: Greg Oden. Ladies and gentlemen, your first overall draft pick in the 2007 NBA draft. Oden is an absolute beast and he’s going to go a long way in helping rebuild the winning ...
The Best Thing Out Of England Since The Stones (Part I)
Published 8/9/2007 by The Baker at Rumors and Rants
Well another English Premier League season is upon us, and I must say it couldn't come soon enough. Sure the season ended in mid-May, and while the Gold Cup and Copa America provided a nice distraction during the summer, I'm ready for the glitz and glam that is the EPL. Here at Rumors and Rants we're pretty ardent soccer fans. From the David Ginola era at Tottenham and Alan Shearer's Blackburn days, we've been soccer junkies long before Saved By the Bell re-runs aired hourly on TBS. Now, don't be quick to label us yuppie American sports fans looking for anything across the Atlantic to cheer for. I like the MLS and firmly ...
Is Tim Howard The Best American Soccer Player?
Published 10/4/2007 by Nathaniel E. Baker at Soccer Source
That's On Point thinks so. The blog has a nifty list of the top ten U.S. soccer players with the former Metros' goalkeeper holding the top spot. Naturally, the list is going to attract its share of controversy, as lists tend to do (see my list of top 25 clubs for Exhibit B in this matter) but TOP's reasoning is sound. They argue that Howard transformed Everton into a top four contender last year and that at 28, he has a good chance of becoming the most decorated American player of all time. I think Howard will have to get a little more consistent for that to happen; his play for the U.S. this summer was pretty poor at ...
7 Days After 7 Goals

7 Days After 7 Goals By: Rob | October 6th, 2007 So I apologize for not addressing last weekend s goalfest in a more timely manner; I wasn t paralyzed by shock at the abysmal performance of our back line and keeper, I was merely busy with dull non-soccer duties. At this point, there s little left to say obviously it would ve been much more fun to blog about had I been the Portsmouth Offsider. Let s just say Marcus Hahnemann was uncharacteristically woeful, the central defense can t welcome Ibrahima Sonko back soon enough, Nicky Shorey should probably not be taking penalty kicks (his miss was the big momentum swing, I thought), and ...
Top 3 US National team goals of all time
Published 1/14/2008 by Mike H at My Soccer Blog
The US MNT's blog continues their countdown to the 500th American international match by asking about the best goals in US men's history. With 665 from which to choose, this could take some time. Or then again, maybe not. Here is my top three: 1. Paul Caligiuri - 1989 World Cup Qualifier vs. Trinidad & Tobago - Without a doubt the most important goal in US history. Without this goal, the US would have missed the 1990 World Cup, would not have been awarded the 1994 World Cup, and would not have got Major League Soccer going. All of this would have kept us from developing into the quality country we are now. ...
Benny Feilhaber on his way to Israel?
Published 1/15/2008 by The Beautiful Game at The Beautiful Game
The young Jewish American midfielder could be headed to the Holy Land. Feilhaber recently moved to the Premiership, where he has seen little time. Why not take a chance with Maccabi Tel Aviv. The transfer is expected to be around $550,000. I wish him well. Hopefully his best years with the USMNT aren't behind him Just for kicks, let's remember this wonder strike.
U.S.-Mexico renew rivalry tonight
Published 2/6/2008 at City Pages - Balls! Sports Blog
Previous Post | Main U.S.-Mexico renew rivalry tonight Filed under: Soccer The U.S. men's national team has owned Mexico in recent years. Since 2000, they've compiled a 9-2-1 record against their southern rivals, dramatically reversing decades of suffering at the feet of the Mexicans. The results have been even more stark on U.S. soil, with the yanks going 8-0-1 and running up a 15-1 scoring advantage. Most recently, Benny Feilhaber sent the Mexicans to defeat in the finals of the Gold Cup with a stunning gamewinner. This string of ugly results is driving Hugo Sanchez's side loopy with anger. The bitter rivalry ...
What about Benny F.?

We all remember it. In fact almost all we associate Benny Feilhaber with is that wonder strike against Mexico in the Gold Cup -- which I saw with a plate of fish and chip and pals at The George and Dragon. Now you're all like, "Oh yeah, I remember that guy." Well things have kinda gone downhill for him since that moment in the clouds, making these Olympics Games a very big tournament for him. Read this interesting story about introduced subject.
