Car Jumping Translates Into Baseball Skills…..Right?
Published 1/10/2008 by Eric SanInocencio at Outs Per Swing
As a newcomer to the Rays family, I admit that my past history concerning Tampa Bay’s franchise consists on what I watched on television or anecdotes that were mentioned in the news. While I follow them exclusively now, most of the information I remember from the past has to do with special situations or players that stick in your mind.
That leads me to the case of former Rays outfielder Joey Gathright, who was traded in 2006 for current Tampa Bay pitcher JP Howell. Gathright was the definition of raw athlete, a slap hitter whose world class speed made scouts salivate. Far from a complete product, the diminutive left-handed hitter never quite turned into ...
Should You Draft Joey Gathright?

Beyond The Box Score's R.J. Anderson is our go-to guy for all things Tampa Bay Rays, as well as some of the best outside-of-the-box statistics you can find. Going even further "Beyond The Box Score," R.J. let me in on the former Ray and current Royals' training secret. We all know that he is as fast as they come, but his overall output is low, making him solely an emergency steals guy. But wouldn't you want to consider drafting a guy who can do this??!! ...
Joey Gathright jumps OVER Dodger pitcher, Video

Joey Gathright jumps OVER Dodger pitcher, Video. This is an amazing play. Joey Gathright shows us all that baseball players are athletes, during a spring training game. I wonder how high we would have jumped if he was in mid season form?
The funny thing is that the pitcher is a dodger but Joey is doing the dodging. That is comedy GOLD
Joey also likes to go Car Jumping! ...
Opening Day… Technically

Opening Day… Technically March 25th, 2008 Posted in Sabermetrics , Philadelphia Phillies , MLB Despite the countdown at the top right of Crashburn Alley, the Major League Baseball season officially started at 6 A.M. when the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox duked it out in front of nearly 45,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome. If you were sleeping or working and couldn’t catch the game, you missed a doozy. Before I begin my recap of the game, I just have to vent and say that I just have a strong disliking of ESPN’s broadcasters. I’m sure some of it is irrational, but it was so annoying to watch the game this morning because at the end of ...

Joey Gathright Will Jump Over Pitchers, Cars With Ease
Published 3/25/2008 at FanIQ Blog
Joey Gathright may not be known as an exceptional hitter, but the Royals outfielder is one thing above all else: a tremendous athlete.
After the Royals starting center fielder David DeJesus went down with an injury, Gathright stepped into his place and knocked down three hits (amazing by itself), one of which came in quite spectacular fashion. Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda stood in his way trying to retrieve the baseball, so Joey just went ahead and jumped over him.
The last time Gathright displayed his leaping ability ... jumping over a car several years ago in a random parking lot. Yes, ...
Royals Player Jumps Over Japanese Man With Ease
Published 3/25/2008 at The Sporting Blog
By Chris Mottram Sadly for Joey Gathright, he's more well known for jumping completely over mid-sized automobiles than he is for playing baseball. During spring training yesterday, he put those skills to use in a (meaningless) game: Hmmm, why does this look familar? Ah yes, Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda is the new Greg Paulus. In case you'd forgotten, Paulus has received a similar man-bits-to-the-top-of-the-head treatment from both Deron Washington and Danny Green . Note: Please excuse my unsolicited Duke hate. (First seen on Fan IQ , although I done chopped up a slightly higher quality Red Lasso clip of it.)
Joey Gathright Can Leap Over Tall Buildings
Published 3/25/2008 by Anthony Hall at MVN Outsider
As you may remember, a video of Kansas City outfielder Joey Gathright jumping over cars was posted on YouTube roughly a year ago. The video was filmed in 2002, and at that time, he would only have been about 21-years-old. Well, nearly six years have passed since then, but Gathright certainly hasn’t lost his leaping ability with his older age.
In a spring training game between the Dodgers and Royals, Gathright was brought off the bench to replace Kansas City’s starting center fielder, David DeJesus. Facing Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, Gathright knocked a chopper down the first base line that was fielded by Kuroda. The pitcher ended up ...
Joey Gathright Not Only Jumps People, He Jumps Cars

I'd love to see a jump off between Adrian Wilson and Joey Gathright. Yesterday in the links I had a clip of Gathright jumping over a pitcher trying to make a tag along the first base line. This clip is from 2007 but the dude is jumping cars.... I remember watching a timed run from Gathright once and he got from home to third in about 9 seconds. The kid is ridiculous. Joey Gathright is Amazing, Part II
Published 3/26/2008 by Andrew Thell at Empty the Bench
Yowzers. This is probably the most athletic play we’re going to see on the basepaths this season. Note how the act of jumping over a human being doesn’t even slow him down when he touches down. Joey is such an exciting player, a freak on the basepaths and able to cover so much ground in the outfield, and I’d like to see more of him. That .266 career batting average has prevented him from reaching 80 games in any season so far, but with a .307 BA and .371 OBP in 74 games last year perhaps we’ll be seeing the 26-year-old do more of this in 2008:

2008 Kansas City Royal Preview

Joey Gathright is on the Royals and you know what that means!
That's right, the one and only Joey Gathright can JUMP OVER A CAR! But really, besides being pretty cool to watch, there isn't a whole lot of benefit that one gets on the baseball field from doing this. Or is there? Check this out. Now that that's out of the way, where are the Royals? In last year's preview I wrote that the Royals would probably make some progress (71 wins) but still finish in the basement of the AL Central. And they did finish in last place and improve (from 62 to 69 wins). While not a win total you would normally get excited ...

Royals outfielder Joey Gathright has never started a full season in the Majors. His inconsistencies at the plate have raised questions about his offensive abilities. Kobe vs. Gathright

A friend just pointed me to this video of Kobe Bryant jumping really high right by a moving car.
I say jumping right by a moving car, not over, because at 0:33 into the clip, it looks like the car is passing just to the side of Kobe, so while still dangerous, not nearly as dangerous as Kobe jumping directly over the car. ...

Joey Gathright Has Some Jumping Competition
Published 4/15/2008 by Chris at Intentional Foul
In one of the more memorable plays of this young MLB Baseball season, Joey Gathright gave us a choice highlight by jumping over a Dodgers pitcher to avoid being tagged out.
We’d like to give you a refresher on the play by showing you the video, but since the MLB is pretty damn stingy with their highlights (yeah, because free advertising is costing you all billions), we’ll settle for this nifty reenactment.
Just in case you need an example of Gathright’s ability, here he is jumping over a car. For real (TAKE THAT, KOBE). ...

Four game losing streak? Last place? Adam Lind trapped in purgatory? Oh yeah? You think that's bad? Remember when I auditioned to be David Hasselhoff's car?
'Cause for the Royals, it's even worse than that. They're on a seven-game slide that has rocketed them past Detroit into the AL Central cellar. They're allowing 4.68 runs a game, which is OK, but they're averaging 3.18 on offense, which is - I mean it's better than the Giants, but the Royals are doing it with the benefit of a DH who just happens to be one of their few non-struggling hitters, Billy Butler. They have six regulars OPSing below .660, five if David DeJesus starts over ...

The Royals bring their league worst (by a hair) offense to town for a four game set having lost four straight. The Jays will seek to capitalize, and potentially crack the elusive .500 barrier. On to the Advance Scout!
Now turn around, it's burning down The city we live in Should we mumble lies? Take them by surprise? Let them have their way with us? The Royals are basically the type of team that the Jays should and can beat - they can hardly hit a lick (and got no-hit the other day) and have been struggling of late. They are the type of team that good teams can sweep, like the Red Sox, for example. May is always to early for ...

The critics weren't happy with beating Kansas City by one run in dramatic fashion yesterday, so the Yankees used their seventh comeback in eight games to beat the Royals, 6-3 today.

A few minutes ago, the colorful, legendary voice of the Chicago White Sox, Ken "the Hawk" Harrelson made--in my estimation--a somewhat dubious claim. He and partner Darrin "D.J." Jackson were discussing the incredible out-of-the-box speed of Royals outfielder Joey Gathright. According to Jackson, Gathright has been clocked at 3.3 seconds to first on a bunt and 3.6 swinging. Pretty fast, huh? Not to be left out, however, Hawk, as is his trademark, invoked the exploits of a player from his playing days--just to make sure none of the viewers would get the crazy idea that players today might be as good, or better, than those of yesteryear. According to ...
